Description
NOV. 26, 19400 BERGER 2,223,157
GARMENT Filed Jan. 5, 1939 INVENTOR.
HARRY BERGER. Paw? ATM ATTORNEY.
Patented Nov. 26, 1940 UNITED STATES Prl'r1: 1 r1" OFFICE GARIWENT Harry Berger, New York, N. Application January 5, 1935 Serial 249,380
1 Claim. (01. 2-237)" My invention relates to a new construction of garments and particularly to the manufacture of garments such as pajamas, etc.,' of relatively thin material. Among the purposes and objects are to provide:
A neat, comfortable pajama pants.
A mens pajama pants which will not accidentally open in front;
A front fly for pajamas which remains flat and closed.
A pajama pants which can be adapted to waist lines of varying girth without alterations and which will not pull the fly open, yet snugly fitting the waist.
A garment of relatively thin material having a fly opening unaffected by the girthwise snugness of fit around and near the waist.
I accomplish these and other objects by the construction herein described and shown in the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof in which;
Fig. 1 is a detail of the side opening.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional detail taken girthwise above the pockets and below the belt.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawing and in the specification to follow.
Garments made of relatively thin material are difficult to keep neat and attractive in appearance when on the wearer because when they fit snugly at the waist to hold the pants portion from dropping such as is required for pajamas the front fly is pulled open.
The attached belt also is required to accommodate waist lines of considerable variation in size and ordinary pajamas are made with elastic belts and various ties, cords and belts which gather the material and pull the garment out of shape as well as open at the front or other opening.
To overcome these various causes and to eliminate the defects in the construction of pajamas and similar pants and the pants of other garments of relatively thin material such as shorts and slacks, etc., I have invented a garment which may be suited to persons having waist and hip sizes different in girth yet which will remain neat and attractive on the wearer and will not open or show the stretch required to support the garment in use.
Referring to the drawing the garment l is provided with a front flap 2 comprising the overlying number 3 which covers the button hole strip 4 both of which are formed by securing the material at one side 5 after being bent over upon the parts so formed. The material at the opposite Side 6 of the front of the garment is likewise bent over and secured-to form the strip 1 to which the buttons 8 are secured. The button holes 9 and the buttons are concealed by the number 3 and'remain concealed even though the belt I0 is considerably stretched to accommodate the girth of the wearers waist line. The material at the sides 5 and 6 is gathered when secured to the belt H] which may be elastic.
The elastic belt and the gathers or pleats H extend around the waist line except at the side opening l2 where the belt terminates at each side l3 and M of the side opening into reinforced ends I5 and IS.
The end I3 is preferably provided with the extension l1 projecting by and beyond the side opening and is provided with the snap fastener 18. The fastener I9 is positioned at or near the side opening and on the side opposite to the extension H and fastener I8, is provided the fastener 20. Thus a plurality of fasteners are provided at the side opening providing a means for adjusting. the girth size of the belt in addition to its elastic material. The end It is provided with a plurality of counterpart sockets 2| and 22 arranged at substantially the same centers as the fasteners l8, l9 and 20.
Because of the extension I! and the position of the fasteners and particularly the fastener IS the belt may be increased as well as decreased in length.
The belt lll,'it will be seen, is continuous and the front flap and top of the opening is thus closed at all times at the belt which is secured to the overlapping parts which are secured to the sides 5 and B.
The fullness provided at the sides 5 and 6 on each side of the flap and front openi g prevents a girth wise tension which would cause the front to be opened or distorted so that the buttons would show. Because of this construction the flap and parts 3, 4 and I remain flat and neat in appearance when my garment is in use.
Due to the widely adjustable feature of the belt because of the multiple fasteners l8, I9, 20 and multiple sockets 2|, 22, the elastic belt l0 need not be depended upon to accommodate different size girths. The elastic of the belt need only function to make a snug fit of the garment to the waist and prevent it from slipping when worn. It is therefore only very slightly stretched when applied to the garment and the finished waist band is practically pressureless. This makes for comfort to the wearer.
Applicants construction of his adjustable feature for his garment is such as will allow the garment to accommodate'a larger girth as well as a smaller one that the particular size it is designed for. In the adjustable girth garments now in use the adjustability is only for smaller and never for larger girths than the particular size of the garment. Larger girths must be taken care of by the stretch of the elastic belt which adds pressure to the Waist ofthe wearer.
Below and in front of the gathered material on each side at the front I have provided the pockets 23 and 24 the material of which is not gathered s that the fullness in the garment and the material behind and forming the inside of the pockets is less conspicuous. The material between the.
pockets and the flap in the center of the front provides enough fullness in most cases to prevent a girthwise tension from distorting oropening the flap.
The pockets also are sufficiently below the belt so that the maximum fullness is not required at this point as there is sufiicient space with the desired fullness above and between the belt and the pockets. I I
I have shown and herein disclosed one construction of my garment to illustrate the principles embodied in and underlying my invention which after a study of this disclosure may suggest, to one skilled in the art to whichit pertains, numerous modifications to adapt it to the many uses to which it is suited. I do not wish to be limited to the details of construction as I may wish to depart therefrom within the scope of the appended claim which sets forth my invention.
I claim:
In a garment of the character described comprising a garment body having a waistband and a slit at the side of the garment extending through the waistband into the body portion and across the front, the back and around the. side opposite the open side of the waistband. HARRY BERGER.
