Description

Feb. 17, 1959 s, STARK 2,873,738
REVERSIBLE GARMENT Filed Jan. 9, 1958 INVENTOR. SAMUEL SEEK A 'r Ton/wens- Unit d Sta es Patent This invention relates to wearing apparel and, more particularly, to swimming trunks and shorts for men and to related items of wearing apparel for women.
'It is an object of the present invention to provide reversible garments for men and women having a self-contained integralsupporter.
'Another object of the present invention is to provide reversible trunks or shorts of the type described, which has a pair of outer covers of different color or design and'a single supporter which may bereadily worn with eithenouter covering exposed, as may be desired.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide reversible trunks or shorts having a common waistband and drawstring which may be used to adjust the size of the waist receiving opening with either side of the trunks; orf shorts exposed and without exposing the constructional features of the garment.
Still a further object of the present invention is to provide reversible trunks or shorts of this type which may be equally as well worn with either side exposed so that a completely finished, neat and tailored appearance may be had at all times.
I 2,873,738 Patented Feb, 17, 1 959 port. The main body portion 12 includes a pair of outer coverings 15a and 15b which are identical except for color or design and which are secured together along the peripheral edges thereof, such as by stitching 22. This stitching also serves to secure support 13 between the edges as is shown in Figure 4. However, support 13 may also be secured to either one of the outer coverings by a stitching 50 as is shown in Figure 6. The outer covers have common peripheral portions defining a single common waist receiving opening at one end and a pair of common leg receiving openings at the opposite end. A waist band 17 which preferably includes an elastic strip insert 18 and spaced parallel rows of stitches 19, provides sufficient elasticity to support the garment in the proper position.
, The part of the main body portion 12 lying between the waistband 17 and the waist receiving peripheral opening is in the form of a tubular extension 16a and 16b defining a common loop 24 through whicha drawstring 25 extends. This drawstring may be provided with a knot 29' in a conventional manner for adjusting the size of the waistband to produce a desired fit.; However,'each or the outer coverings 15a and 15b and'the support 13 is provided with aligned openings 27a, 27b and 28 respectively, for receiving the knot 29 of the drawstring therethrough, for purposes hereinafter described. In-
' stead of a single drawstring, a divided drawstring may drawing the support 13 throughone of the leg openings An additional object of the present invention is to pro- I vide a reversible trunk or short construction with a builtin reversible supporter that may be readily applied to the manufacture "of swimming trunks, walking shorts, athletic shorts, and other related garments either with or without a fly front. 1
A practical object of the present inventionis to provide a reversible garment of the above type which can be manufactured in large quantities at relatively low cost so as to be made available in various price ranges for general consumption.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure l is a front elevational view of a garment made in accordance with the present invention in an extended position;
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the garment shown in Figure 1 in a first intermediate position;
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2, showing the garment in a second or reversed intermediate position;
Figure 4 is an enlarged transverse cross-sectional View taken along line 4-4 of Figure 2;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary view of the garment in the condition ready to wear;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary view of a modification of Figure 4; and
Figure 7 is a view similar to Figure 1, showing a modi- -fied form of construction.
Referring now more in detail to, the drawing, and particularly to Figures 1 to 5 thereof, a pair of trunks 10 made in accordance with one form of the present invention is shown to include a main body portion 12 and a support 13 made of a material suitable for such supand then returning the support into the interior of the garment. Thus, by drawing the support 13 outwardly through one of the. leg receiving openings of the garment 10b shown in Figure 3, wherein the one'out'er covering 15b is exposed, the parts will assume the position shown in Figure l. By then pushing the support l3tintothe interior of the main body portion 12, the adjusted garment 10a, asshown in Figure'2, will hav e the other outer covering 1511 exposed and ready for use. The knot 29 is pulled through the hole 27a and 27b in the outer covering 15a, 15b which is closest to the skin of the wearer and through the hole 28 in the support, as is clearly shown in Figure 4. By then folding the tubular extension part 16a, 16b of the garment inwardly into the main body portion 12 up to the level of the uppermost row of stitches 20 of the waistband 17, this extension is concealed and only the waistband portion 17 of the garment and everything therebeneath is exposed to View, as is shown in Figure 5. It will be noted that all exposed seams of the garment are smooth so as to provide a completely finished appearance.
Referring now to Figure 7 of the drawing, a modified form of construction 30 is shown wherein the main body portion 32 includes a pair of outer coverings 35, each of which has a wide double waistband and is provided with a fly front. portion 32 in a manner similar to that hereinbefore described. However, the front portion of the support 33 is provided with a cutout 42 in the vicinity of the fly front and waistband 37. With the'support assembled within the main body portion, the waistband is foldable in- 'wardly about a medial fold line 45 to produce a finished appearance. The waistband has a releasable closure flap 39 and associated snap type or other similar buttons 40a and 40b on both of the outer coverings forming the main body portion. Thus, the slide fastener or similar closure 43 and adjustable flap 39 may be opened and closed at The support 33 is secured'to the main body applied to substantially any type of related garment in which it is desired to attain the reversible feature described while providing a completely finished and tailored appearance in either of the selected positions. While this invention has been described with particular reference to the constructions shown in the drawing, it is to be understood that such is not to be construed as imparting limitations upon the invention, which is best defined by the claims appended hereto.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by 'Letters Patent:
