APRON WITH OPEN NECK PORTION Filed July 2, 1958 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 United States Patent APRON WITH OPEN NECK PORTION Harriet G. Slavin, Brookline, Mass.
Application July 2, 1958, Serial No. 746,155
3 Claims. (Cl. 2-48) This invention relates to an apron, particularly one that is commonly used in doing housework, cooking, etc.
- One object of my invention is to provide an apron that has an open neck portion to be placed around the neck, thus eliminating the usual closed loop, which latter often discommodes a persons hair when putting it over 6 tion, and almost completely encircle a persons waist when tied in place, to give a belt-like eifect at the front of the apron.
The foregoing and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and arrangement of parts such as is disclosed by the drawings. The nature of the invention is such as to render it susceptible to various changes and modifications, and therefore, I am not to be limited to the construction disclosed by the drawings nor to the particular'parts described in the specification; but am entitled to all such changes therefrom as fall within the scope of my claims.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of my apron spread out flat.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing my apron in position upon a person.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged, sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged, sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
As illustrated, my apron has a connecting neck portion 10, shown made in two pieces and stitched together as at 13, and which is placed at the back of the neck, extending around both sides thereof to the front. Two
body portions 12 and 14 are connected to said neck portion by stitches 13. Binding tape 16 extends around the edges of said neck and body portions, being stitched to them as at 17. These body portions 12 and 14 are preferably of the same shape and size.
Said body portion 14 has a sash 18 attached thereto at an outside edge thereof which is intended to extend partly around the body in one direction, the edges being doubled back to provide a hem 19. Another sash 20 is attached to said body portion 14 at a point intermediate opposite sides thereof, the edges being doubled back to provide a hem 22. A pocket 26 is also provided on said portion 14 the edges of which have binding tape 28 sewed thereto as at 30.
Said sash 20 is attached to said body portion 14 by forming a fold 32 in the material of the latter, positioned intermediate opposite sides thereof, then inserting one end portion of said sash 20 between said fold 32 and another and opposite part of said body portion 14. Stitches 34 extend from outside, through said body portion 14, said fold 32, said sash 20 and another part of said body portion 14, as shown in said Fig. 3.
Said sash 18 is attached to said body portion 14 by forming a fold 36 in said sash 18 at the end thereof, inserting the end part of said folded portion between said body 14 and said binding tape 16. Stitches, as at 38, extend through said sash 18, binding tape 16, folded portion 36 and through another part of said binding tape 16, as shown in said Fig. 4.
My apron is placed in position for wearing, by placing said neck portion 10 back of a persons neck, with said body portions 12 and 14 hanging therefrom at the ,front. Said body portion 14 is placed over said body portion 12 to partly overlap it, said body portions adequately covering the wearer at the front. The sashes 18 and 20 are brought, from the front, to the back, with said sash 18 crossing the front of said body portion 12. In wearing position, the two sashes, at their attaching points at the front, are spaced substantially an equal distance apart, as shown in said Fig. 2, thus giving the apron a balanced appearance. By overlapping body portions 12 and 14, as shown, a double thickness of material protects the clothing which they cover.
The same apron fits a stout person or a thin one, since the two body portions 12 and 14 provide plenty of material, hence, merely by varying the extent of the overlapping of one body portion over the other, the
apron can be made to fit dilferent size persons, whether small or oversize. It is likewise true, that said neck portion enables either a tall person or short person to use the same apron, since for a short person the neck portion 'can be placed well down the back, while the opposite is true for a tall person.
What I claim is:
1. An apron comprising a neck encircling element forming an open neck portion and two front body covering portions of substantially the same size and shape extending from opposite ends of said neck encircling element, each of said body portions being of a width to extend from substantially the front center of the body around to the sides, and two sashes attached to a first said front body portion, the point of attachment of one of said sash being intermediate opposite sides of said first body portion, and the point of attachment of the other said sash being at a side edge of said first body portion that is nearest the adjacent edge of the second body portion.
2. An apron as set forth in claim 1, said first body portion having a fold therein at said intermediate point, and means holding a said sash to said fold portion.
3. An apron as set forth in claim 1, said first body portion having a fold therein at said intermediate point, and stitches extending through a said sash, said fold and through an adjacent portion of said first body portion, holding said fold, adjacent portion and the latter said sash together.
