SIEGFRIED IsAAc Patented Dec. 22, 1953 WAIST AND ABDOMINAL FITTING PORTION IN NETHER GARMENT Siegfried Isaac, New York, N. Y. Application J une 11, 1952, Serial No. 292,863
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in waist and abdominal fitting garmerits.
More particularly, the present invention proposes the construction of an improved garment which will give abdominal support to the wearer and yet present an attractive exterior appearance.
Another object of the present invention proposes forming a garment which will eliminate the need of a corset or girdle and still retain the same abdominal support and fit.
Still further, the present invention proposes a garment construction which is particularly adapted for use in various outer garments for women such as skirts, blouses, slacks, shorts, pedal-pushers or knee-length shorts, dresses, slips and the like to provide a snug fit and a well tailored appearance at a relatively inexpensive cost.
For further comprehension of the invention and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a pair of womens slacks embodying the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a front view of the slacks shown in Fig. 1 with parts broken away and concealed parts shown in dotted outline.
Fig. 3 is a rear view similar to Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary View with parts broken away of the left front section of a garment illustrating a modification of the invention.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 of the left rear section of the garment shown therein.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary detail view taken on line 6-5 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 7 is a View similar to Fig. 6 showing the cooperating fastener structure.
Fig. 8 is a similar view to Fig. l, but showing a modified form of arrangement in the upper part of the garment.
The garment construction in accordance with the first form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 8, inclusive, shows the invention as it would be incorporated in a pair of womens slacks l5.
Slacks I5 have a waist and abdominal fitting portion i6 and a lower thigh covering portion H, the latter portion containing the legs [8 and IQ of the slacks.
' 1 Claim. (01. 2=-221) Both portions l5 and I7 are preferably made of inelastic material suchas any of the textile cloths, cotton, wool, linen, rayon, nylon and the like. 7
The garment is made from four pieces of material, a left front section 20 (the wearer's left), a right front section 2|, a left rear section 22 and a right rear section 23. The sections are sewn together down a front seam 24, a rear seam 25 and two side seams 26 and 21 to form the waist and abdominal fitting portion is. The rear seam is left open adjacent the upper marginal edge 28 of the waist and abdominal fitting portion and atape'29 extends around the upper marginal edge 28 inside the waist and abdominal fitting portion [6 between the unsecured edges oi'the' rear sections 22 and 23. The rear central seam 25 terminating a distance from tape 29 provides a rear opening 39 in the waist and abdominal fitting portion to facilitate putting on the garment. The rear opening 39 is closed by a slide fastener 3| covered by a flap 32.
Between the front'central seam 24 and each side seam Hand 21 a plurality of darts 3 3, 34, 35, 36, 31, 38, 39 and 40 are formed, the material being folded and stitched down to form the darts. The darts 33 to 40, inclusive, are formed on the inside of the waist and abdominal fitting portion, and two spaced darts are provided in each section, darts 33 and 34 being in the left front section 26, darts 35 and 3B in the right front section 2|, darts 3! and 38 in the left rear section 22, and darts 39 and 4B in the right rear section 23.
Each dart is covered by a ribbon 4| (see also Fig. 4) of inelastic material sewn over the dart on the inside of the Waist and abdominal fitting portion l6 and encased between each ribbon and its underlying dart is a stay 42 of the type commonly used in corsets and foundation garments. The stays arepreferably bone but may be of metal or other material.
Between the darts 34 and 38 adjacent the left side seam 26 is a wide elastic band or insert 43 secured to the left front section 20 and the left rear section 22 in the waist and abdominal fitting portion IB. The band or insert 43 is secured in unstretched condition at points on sections 29 and 22 spaced apart a distance greater than the unstretched length of the band or insert.
On the other side of the garment, between darts 36 and 40 adjacent the right side seam 21 a similar elastic band or insert M is similarly secured. The secured edges of the elastic bands or inserts 43 and 44 are preferably covered by the ribbon covering the dart adjacent thereto and stitched to the respective section and the ribbons.
The front central seam 24 is likewise covered by a ribbon 45 somewhat longer than the other ribbons 4! and a longer stay 46 is encased between the ribbon and the seam, the ribbon being sewn to the material adjacent the seam.
Each ribbon 4! and ribbon 45 extends from beneath the tape 29 and ribbons 4| extend substantially the full length of the darts. This lower terminal point of the darts is about along the hip line of the wearer with the central stay extending about an inch-and-a-half below the other stays.
The modified form of the invention shown in Figs. 4 to '7, inclusive, is characterized by the provision of a front central stay 41, and three spaced stays 48, 49 and 50 on each front section like those on the left front section 29' shown. An elastic band or insert 51 is provided between the stays 48 and 49 fastened in the manner described above.
A single stay 52 is provided in each rear section like the one shown in the left rear section 22' illustrated. In addition, a tab 53 is secured to the left rear section 22' adjacent one half of the slide fastener 3 l with eyes 54. A similar tab 55 is secured to the right rear section 23 with hooks 56 (one only being shown) to catch the eyes 54 and give support to the slide fastener.
In Fig. 8 this invention includes a modified arrangement of the upper part of the garment which includes superimposed pleats 60 at the outer side of the garment to cover the stays 41, 4B, 49 and 50 and the corresponding darts, and thereby to improve the appearance of the garment.
It is to be understood that a suitable horizontally extending elastic strip may also be provided either completely or partially around the inner side of the garment to grip the body of the wearer; that this new garment construction can also be adapted for use on mens slacks and trousers.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
A womans outer garment comprising a waist and abdominal fitting portion and a portion covering at least the lower thighs of the wearer, the garment comprising front and rear sections, a front central stay, a plurality of stays on the front section on each side of the central stay, a wide elastic band secured between a pair of stays, a slide fastener in the center of said rear section, a single stay on each side of said slide fastener adjacent thereto, a pair of opposed tabs containing a hook and eye respectively secured adjacent the slide fastener to provide support therefor, darts secured beneath the stays, and a ribbon stitched to the garment and enclosing each stay and dart, said central stay extending below the lower edge of said darts.
