STAY POCKET. I APPLIOATION FILED umzs, 1914.

tmrrm) STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PAULINE SHULTZ MGOMBER, 01? HASTINGS, MICHIGAN.
STAY-POCKET.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAULINE SHULTZ Mo- UMBER, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding at Hastings, Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in Stay-Pockets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in brassieres and similar garments provided with stays.
The main object of this invention is to provide in a brassiere or like garment, an improved stay pocket having a neat and finished appearance and also one which serves as a reinforce for the seams of the garment and, further, one which can be readily made by means of an attachment on an ordinary sewing machine at the same time that the seams of the garment are made.
Further objects, and objects relating to details and economies of construction will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claim.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a front perspective view of a garment embodying the features of my in vention. Fig. II is a detail view in elevation showing one of the stay pockets, a portion thereof being broken away. Fig. III is a detail enlarged sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. II, showing the construction of the pocket in detail.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts and the sectional view is taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawings, the garment illustrated is a body garment of the type commonly known as a brassiere. The garment is constructed of a number of sections of fabric such as 1 and 2, cut to secure the desired shape. The stays of the garment are disposed at the seams. At such seams as it is desired to provide with stays I form pockets 3 adapted to receive suitable stays 7. The edges of the meeting body sect-ions are overlapped and folded inwardly, as

clearly shown in Fig. III,'the section 1 having an infolded edge 4:, and the section 2 having an infolded edge 5. The sections are overlapped to an extent slightly exceeding the width of the pocket. The pocket strip 6 is disposed upon one of the sections, the inner section 2 in the structure illustrated, with one of its edges folded inwardly over the folded edge of the section 2 on which it is disposed and with its other edge opposite the folded edge of the other section 1. The parts thus disposed are secured together by rows of stitches 9 and 10 passing through the folded and overlapped edges of said body sections and pocket strip. The pocket strip is preferably, in practice, in the form of a tape having selvage edges, and not only provides pockets for the stays but also provides a finish for the seams and a reinforcement therefor. This permits the body fabric being made of light, sheer or delicate material and, at the same time suitable pockets are provided which effectively retain and receive the strain of the stays without undue strain on the body fabric at any particular point. The pockets may be left open at the upper end or stitched across temporarily, as desired, it being intended that the stays may be readily removable so that they can be taken out when it is desired to launder the garment, and quickly and easily replaced. The fabric is doubled to provide one wall of the pocket and the pocket strip may be of firm, strong material, so that both walls of the pocket are strong and the stay is not likely to punch holes therein and they are not likely to give way under strain. As stated, by this means I provide a garment with stay pockets which is neat and finished in appearance, and one in which the garment is reinforced and supported in a highly satisfactory manner and, at the same time, the seams of the garment can be formed on a sewing machine so that the structure also possesses the advantage of being economical to produce so far as the item of labor is concerned.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a garment of the class described comprising body sections, a stay pocket at the seam of two body sections, the meeting edges of the sections being folded inwardly and overlapped, and a pocket strip disposed upon one of the sections With .one of its :In Witness whereof, *I hztve -hereunto, set edges folded inwardly over the folded edge my-h-and and seal in the presence of two lo 01511116 Section Ql -whichmit is disposed fin -:5 witnesses.
