BY MHML Patented June 29, 1954 BIB Helen H. La Doux, Spirit Lake, Iowa Application April 16, 1952, Serial No. 282,516
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in bibs, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a bib of the character herein described which may be conveniently placed around the neck of infants and which includes a depending portion adapted to be placed over the shoulder of the mother so as to provide protection for the mothers clothing while the infant is being burped.
Some of the advantages of the invention reside in its simplicity of construction which facilitates convenient installation or removal of the bib.
With the above more important objects and features in view, and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a perspective view illustrating the invention in use;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the invention per se, the same being shown in a closed position; and,
Figure 3 is a plan view, similar to that shown in Figure 2, but illustrating the invention in readiness for opening.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a bib which is designated in general by the reference character I0 and comprises in its construction a unitary pad member l2 which is of an elongated, preferably substantially oval configuration and is constructed of any suitable material.
The pad member l2 has one end portion thereof provided with a neck receiving opening l4, while the remaining, depending portion of the pad member is formed with an open slit l6, communicating with the opening I4 (see Figure 3).
Regions of the pad member at the opposite sides of the slit it constitute a pair of lobes I8, 20 which may be overlapped, as shown in Figure 2.
Coacting fastener means are provided on the pad member adjacent the opening I 4, these means comprising a pair of coacting ties 22, 24 which are secured to the pad member at the opposite sides of the slit l6.
When the invention i placed in use, the lobes i8, 20 are separated laterally so as to spread the slit l6, whereby to facilitate installation of the bib around the neck of the infant. The lobes i8, 20 may then be overlapped, as shown in Figure 2, and the ties 22, 24 secured together in a knot as shown at 26, whereby the bib will be sustained in what may be called a closed position.
The depending portion of the bib constituted by the lobe 20 may then be placed over the mothers shoulder, as shown in Figure 1, thus protecting the mothers clothes while the infant is being burped. At the same time the lobe I8 will protect the infants clothes.
If desired, the outside and inside marginal edges of the pad member I 2 may be provided with suitable ornamentation such as stitching, crocheting, or the like, as indicated at 28.
It is to be noted that the ties 22, 24 are easily accessible from the front when the bib is in use, thus eliminating the necessity of turning the child backwards and forwards each time the bib is tied or untied.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be readily understood from. the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A bib formed from a single piece of material and having a vertically elongated substantially oval configuration, said bib comprising a pair of similar kidney-shaped lobes disposed in reversed substantially coplanar relation and having inner edge portions thereof in overlapping but unattached contact, the upper portion of the bib being provided with a substantially circular neck receiving opening affording a relatively narrow strip connecting said lobes at the top of the bib, an arcuate extension provided at the inner edge of one of said lobes at one side of said opening and overlapping an adjacent portion of the other lobe, the overlapped but unattached relation of said lobes affording a passage communicating with said opening whereby the bib may be donned and removed, and means for separably attaching said extension to said adjacent portion of the other lobe, whereby to provide a closure at the inner end of said passage.
