Application February 16, 1954, Serial N 0. 410,622 2 Claims. 01. 2-74 This invention relates to a universal garment formed around the body with a sheet of material having openings through which the head may be positioned and having fastening elements in corners and a strap extended through loops in the intermediate part thereof whereby the sheet of material is adapted to be folded to provide a plurality of garments of different designs. 2 The purpose of this invention is to providemeans for positioning openings and fastening elements on a sheet of material whereby the sheet of material is adapted to be secured in different positions around the human body.
Various types of garments and particularly evening dresses have been fashioned on persons and secured in position by various means and although such materials are adapted to be folded to form garments of different designs the sheet of material is not adapted to be reused or adapted to be changed to different designs without changing the positions of the fastening elements thereof. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a sheet of material having openings therethrough and fastening elements thereon whereby the sheet of material is adapted to be fashioned in different positions on a human body without changing fastening elements thereof.
i The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for forming and locating fasteningelements on a sheet of material whereby various types of garments U may be fashioned on the human body with" the same sheet of material.
Another object of the invention is to provide a sheet of material haying an arrangement of openings and fastening elements therein and thereon in which the sheet of material may be folded to form garments by if the average layman.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sheet of material adapted to be used for forming garments sheet of material is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a sheet of material having spaced openings positioned on the longitudinal center of said sheet of material with a strap extended through loops transversely positioned on said sheet of material and with buttons and button holes on opposite corners of the sheet of material.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in conneetion with the drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a plan view showing the sheet of material in the open position.
Figure 2 is a cross section through the sheet of material taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a front elevational view showing the sheet of material folded around the upper part of the body of a person with the head extended through one of the openings in the sheet of material and showing one of the ends of the material buttoned at the front.

Figure 4 is a front elevational view showing the sheet of material folded to form a garment'of a different design in which the flaps forming the corners of one end of the sheet of material are folded over the arms from the inside and under the arms to a point be low the arms at the front where the corners of the sheet of material are fastened.
Figure 5 is a"view showing the sheet of material folded to form a front and rear panel with the panels adapted to be used as a stole. V
Figure 6 is a front elevational view showing the shee offm'aterial folded whereby one end is adapted to button around the hips of 'a person and the other around the shoulders. v i V i Figure 7 is a view somewhat similar to that shown in Fig. 4 except that one end of the sheet of material is doubled whereby the head is placed through two of the openings through the sheet of material and .the lower portion'of the sheet of material is' buttoned" around the waist.
ing one end of the sheet of material to provide the head cover. I
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved one piece garmentof this invention includes a sheet of material '10 having sides 11 and 12 and ends 13 and 14 fjhereby withthe sides longer than the ends the material is of rectangular shape.
The openingsfor the head of a wearer, as indicated by the numerals 15, 1;6, and 17 are positioned on the longitudinal center of a the sheet of ma "rial with the opening 15 positioned substantially midway between the'ends of the 'sh'eet'of material and the openings 15 and 17 substantially midway between the openings 16 and the ends 13 and 14, respectively." x ii The ends of the sheet of material are provided with fastening elements such as buttons 18 and 19 spaced from the end' 13 on the side 11, similar buttons 20 and 21 also spaced fromthe side 11 and positioned adjacent the end 14 and on the'op'posife side of the sheet of material slots or button holes 22 and 23 are provided tons 20 aid 21, respectively."
The sheet of material is also provided with slits 26 and 27 at one side providing'a strap 28, and slit 29 and 30 at the other which provide a strap 31 and, as shown in Fig. 1, a strip of tape or strap 32 extends through the slits.
With the sheet of material formed in this manner it will readily be understood that the same sheet of material may be folded to provide garments of the different designs illustrated in Figs. 3 to 11 inclusive and it will also be understood that the sheet of material may be folded to form other designs as may be desired.
As will be noted in Fig. 3 the head is placed through the opening 17 with the end 14 folded over on the side whereby with the buttons 20 and 21 inserted through the button holes 24 and 25, respectively a collar is provided around the upper end of the garment and the strap 32 is positioned around the lower part thereof.
In Fig. 4 the head is placed through the center opening 16 and, with the intermediate portion of the garment folded the ends 13 and 14 will be on the line i providing the lower end and the lower portion, which folds outwardly from the inside, around the arms, and under the arms are connected with buttons 18 and 19 which are positioned in the button holes 22 and 23, respectively.
The design illustrated in Fig. 5 shows a wrap formed by folding a sheet of material on the longitudinal center whereby the buttons 20 and 21 may be inserted through the button holes 24 and 25 in one side and with the parts in this position the buttons 18 and 19 will be located on the opposite side of the wrap. In this design the strap 32 is omitted and the slit therefore shows on one side of the garment.
In the garment illustrated in Fig. 6 the sheet of material is folded transversely on a line positioned between the openings 16 and 17 and with the head placed through the openings 16 and 17 the end 14 will be adapted to be wrapped around the upper part or shoulders of the body with the buttons 20 and 21 in the button holes 24 and 25 respectively and with the buttons 18 and 19 in the button holes 22 and 23 respectively. In this design the strap 32 is placed around the waist and positioned below the opening 15.
In the design illustrated in Fig. 7 the sheet of material is folded somewhat similar to that shown in Fig. 6 with the head placed through the openings 16 .and 17 and with the end 14 drawn downwardly to a point spaced from the lower edge of the back and the end 13 spaced below the end 14. In this design the buttons 20 and 21 are extended through the button holes 24 and 25 with the corners drawn together below the arms, the garment being folded on the line 33.
The garment illustrated in Figs. 9, 10 and 11 is somewhat similar to that shown in Fig. 7 wherein the sheet of material is folded on the line 33 between the openings 16 and 17 and the head placed through both of the openings 16 and 17. To provide the head cover the end 14 is extended upwardly with the buttons 20 and 21 adapted to be extended through the button holes 24 and 25 with the flaps or corners of the garment drawn downwardly below the chin as shown in Fig. 9. With the parts in these positions the buttons 18 and 19 are fastened below the head and the strap 32 placed around the waist.
Figure 10 is similar to that shown in Figs. 4 and 7 except that the edge, indicated by the numeral 33 is placed across the back.
The garment illustrated in Figs. 9, l0 and 11 is also provided with an extended lower end and it will be understood that distances between the openings and also between the buttons and button holes and the ends of the sheet of material may be varied as desired.
By this means garments of many different fashions or designs may be folded from the sheet of material illustrated in Fig. 1 and parts of the garment may be connected or fastened around the arms, around the waist, or at suitable points on the body.
It will be understood that other modifications, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made in.
