This invention relates to an article of wearing apparel, more particularly to an article of such class having a belt permanently attached thereto.

The invention aims to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an article of wearing apparel with an extendible and contractible waist band having fixed thereto an extensible and contractible belt, and the band and belt being so related to provide for the simultaneous extending and contracting thereof when the article is worn on different positions of the wearers body and without discomfiture to the wearer.

The invention further aims to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an article of wearing apparel having an automatically adjustable waist band, automatically adjustable plackets, and an automatically adjustable belt fixed intermediate its ends to the back of the waist band having end terminal portions connected together exteriorly of the front of the waist band, and with the belt secured to the waist band front adjacent said end terminal portions; the waist band, plackets and belt being so constructed and related to provide for the simultaneous adjusting thereof when the article is worn and the body of the wearer assumes different positions.

The invention further aims to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an article of wearing apparel including an extensible and contractible sectional waist band, a belt attached to the latter, and with the belt so formed, when closed, to permit of the extending and contracting of the waist hand without discomfiture to the wearer.

The invention further aim to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, an article of wearing apparel for the purpose set forth which is simple in its construction, strong, durable, washable, pleasing in appearance, embodying a maximum of comfort when worn, having a permanent snug fit at the waist of the wearer irrespective of the position of the wearers body to thereby prevent the article from riding down from the waist of the wearer, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and preventing the transfer to the body of a wearer the discomfort of a binding action of a belt correlated with the waist band of the garment when the wearer assumes different positions.

Embodying the aims aforesaid, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein are shown embodiments of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

The article of wearing apparel in accordance with this invention is illustrated by way of example as a pair of shorts.

With reference to Figures 1 and 2, the body part of the garment is generally indicated at 5 and it includes a front portion 6 and a back portion I separated at their sides. The body part 5 is formed with a pair of spaced aligned slits 8, 9 which are closed at their lower ends and have open upper ends at the top edge of said body part.

The upper part of the front portion 6 between the inner side edges of the slits 8, 9 is so formed to provide the front section I!) of a waist band. The section III includes a back strip Iii arranged to form a hem ll opening at its ends l2, l3 at points spaced from the ends [4, l5 respectively of said section. The front of section I 0 has secured thereto male sections I6, I! of snap fasteners in close proximity to the ends l4, l5 respectively thereof. Extending into the hem ll through the open end I 2 of the latter and having its inner end anchored, as at I8, to the section In is an elastic member IQ of tape-like form having its rear face, in proximity to its outer end provided with a female section 20 of a snap fastener. EX- tending into the hem ll through the open end l3 of the latter and having its inner end anchored, as at 2|, to the section H1 is an elastic member 22 of tape-like form having its rear face, in proximity to its outer end provided with a female'section 23 of a snap fastener. The front of section [0 has secured thereto a plurality of spaced loops 24 for a purpose to be referred to.

The upper part of the back portion 1 between theouter side edges of the slits 8, 9 is so formed to provide the back section 25 of a waist band. The section 25 is so formed to provide a hem 26 closed at each end. The ends of the section 25 are indicated at 27, 28. The front wall 29 of the hem 2B is provided with a pair of spaced slits 30, iii disposed between the transverse median and the ends of section 25. The slits 30, 3! are spaced rearwardly from the ends 21, 23 respectively of the section 25. The end terminal portions of the section 25 extend beyond the ends l4, of section Ill and are overlapped by the end terminal portions of said section I0. The section on its outer face in close proximity to the ends 21, 28 has secured thereto male sections 32, 33 respectively of snap fasteners.

The article of wearing apparel includes a belt 34 formed of a pair of non-elastic end sections or portions 35, 36 and an elastic inner section or portion 31 secured at its ends to the inner ends of the sections 35, 36. The belt section 37 is completely arranged in the hem 25 and at its transverse median it is fixedly secured or anchored, as at 38, to the waist band section 25 centrally of the back of the latter. The belt sections 35, 36 have a portion of their length arranged within the hem 26 and their remaining portion extended outwardly from said hem through the slits 30, 31 respectively. The belt section is formed with a row of spaced openings 39 and inwardly of the latter, on its inner face, with a female section of a snap fastener. The belt section 35 has its outer end portion in the form of a loop 4| carrying a buckle 42. The tongue 43 of the buckle projects through the bend 44. The inner face of the belt section 36 is provided with a female section 45 of a snap fastener and is spaced rearwardly from the loop 4 l.

The article of wearing apparel includes a pair of spaced oppositely disposed inner side wall forming members 45, 41 for a pair of pockets. The outer side edges of the members 46, 41 for a portion of their length are secured to the outer side edges of the slits 8, 9. The members 46, 41 extend inwardly across said slits and are arranged rearwardly of parts of the inner face of front portion 6. The article also includes a pair of spaced oppositely disposed outer side Wall forming members 48, 49 for the said pockets and are arranged against parts of the inner face of the front portion 5. The outer side edges of the members 48, 49 for a portion of their length are secured to the inner side edges of the slits 8, 9. The members 45, 41, 48, 49 are of like form and depend from the closed inner ends of the slits. That portion of the outer side edges of the members 46, 48 and 41, 49 below the closed inner ends of the slits are secured together by stitching. The bottom edges of the members 46, 41 are secured to the bottom edges of the members 48, 49 respectively by stitching. The inner side edge of an inner wall forming member has a portion thereof secured by stitching to the corresponding side edge portion of an outer Wall forming member to provide a hinge connection 50 between such members at a point below the upper ends of said members. The upper portions of the members 48, 49 form parts of the rear of the waist band section Hi. The upper portions 'of the members 45, 47 form parts of the front of the waist band section 25.

The body part 5 is formed with a fly 5! closed at its lower and at its upper end. The loops 24 are for the passage therethrough of the belt sections 35, 35.

The snap fastener sections 25 and 23 coact with the snap fastener sections 32, 33 respectively for connecting the front Waist band section with the back waistband section and such connection being elastic. The snap fastener sections l6, l1 coact with the snap fastener sections 40, 45 respectively for connecting the belt sections 35, 33 against the outer face of the waist band section if].

With reference to Figure 3, a modified form of garment is indicated at 52. The modified form is substantially the same as the article of wearing apparel shown by Figures 1 and 2 with the exceptions which will now be set forth. The garment 52 is formed with a fly 53 open at its upper end. The sections of the fly at their upper ends are detachably connected together, as at 54. In lieu of providing the belt sections 35, 36 with the snap fastener sections 43, 45, which are used to engage the snap fastener sections l6, H for connecting the belt sections 35, 36 to the front of the waist band section If], the said belt sections are secured to said waist band section by spaced stitchings 55, 55. A further difference resides in the employment of two hems 51, 58 in lieu of the single hem H. The hems 51, 58 are closed at their inner ends, and open at their outer ends. The hems 51, 58 have anchored therein and extended therefrom the elastic members [9, 22 respectively. The front section of the waist band of garment 52 is split due to the open upper end of the fly 53. The said section is indicated at 59. Otherwise than that as stated the construction of the garment 52 will be the same as the form shown by Figures 1 and 2.

The members 45, 41 in connection with the elastic members 19 and 22 attached thereto and the arrangement of said members relative to front portion 6, will provide the garment with adjustable plackets.

What I claim is:

1. In an article of wearing apparel a front and a back portion separated at their sides, said front portion having means at its upper part to provide the front section of a waist band, said back portion having means at its upper part to provide the back section of a waist band, said front section overlapping said back section, oppositely disposed elastic members secured to said front section and disposed inwardly of the ends of the latter, coacting means at the ends of the back section and the ends of said members for connecting the back section to said front section, a belt having an inner elastic section and a pair of oppositely extending non-elastic end sections secured to the ends of said elastic section, said elastic section arranged within and anchored intermediate its ends to the waist band back section, said non-elastic belt sections arranged Within and extending from the waist band back section and overlapping the outer face of the front section of the waist band, and means for connecting the non-elastic sections of the belt at points spaced inwardly of their outer ends against the outer face of the front waist band section.

2. In an article of wearing apparel a front and a back portion separated at their sides, said front portion having means at its upper part to provide the front section of a waist band, said back portion having means at its upper part to provide the back section of Waist band, said front section overlapping said back section, oppositely disposed elastic members secured to said front section and disposed inwardly of the ends of the latter, coacting means at the ends of the back section and the ends of said members for connecting the back section to said front section, a belt having an inner elastic section and a pair of oppositely extending non-elastic end sections secured to the ends of said elastic section, said elastic section arranged within and anchored intermediate its ends to the waist band back section, said nonelastic belt sections arranged within and extending from the waist band back section and overla ing the outer face of the front section of the waist band, and the outer face of the front waist band section and the inner face of the non-elastic belt sections having spaced co-acting means for connecting said belt sections to the front waist band section.

3. In an article of wearing apparel a front and a back portion separated at their sides, said front portion having means at its upper part to provide the front section of a waist band, said back portion having means at its upper part to provide the back section of a waist band, said front section overlapping said back section, oppositely disposed elastic members secured to said front section and disposed inwardly of the ends of the latter, coacting means at the ends of the back section and the ends of said members for connecting the back section to said front section, a belt having an inner elastic section and a pair of oppositely extending non-elastic end sections secured to the ends of said elastic section, said elastic section arranged within and anchored intermediate its ends to the waist band back section, said non-elastic belt sections arranged within and extending from the waist band back section and overlapping the outer face of the front section of the waist band, the outer face of the front waist band section and the inner face of the non-elastic belt sections having spaced coacting means for connecting said belt sections to the front waist band section, the coacting means of the front waist band section being located substantially at the ends of such section, and the coacting means of the non-elastic belt sections being spaced inwardly from the ends of said belt sections.

4. In an article of wearing apparel a front and a back portion separated at their sides, said front portion having means at its upper part to provide the front section of a waist band, said back portion having means at its upper part to provide the back section of a waist band, said front section overlapping said back section, oppositely disposed elastic members secured to said front section and disposed inwardly of the ends of the latter, coacting means at the ends of the back section and the ends of said members for connecting the back section to said front section, a belt having an inner elastic section and a pair of oppositely extending non-elastic end sections secured to the ends of said elastic section, said elastic section arranged within and anchored intermediate the ends to the waist band back section, said non-elastic belt sections arranged within and extending from the waist band back section and overlapping the outer face of the front section of the waist band, and spaced stitching located in proximity to the ends of the front waist band section for anchoring the nonelastic belt sections at points remote from the free ends of the latter against the outer face of the front waist band section.

5. In an article of wearing apparel a body part formed with an automatically extendible and contractible waist band formed of a separate front section and a separate channeled rear section, the ends of said front section overlapping the ends of said rear section, an automatically extendible and contractible continuous belt formed of an elastic portion and a pair of oppositely disposed non-elastic portions secured to the ends of the said elastic portion, said elastic portion arranged completely within and anchored intermediate its end to said rear section intermediate the ends of the latter, said non-elastic portions arranged within and extending outwardly from said rear section rearwardly of its ends and overlapping the outer face of said front section, means for connecting each of said nonelastic portions intermediate its ends to the front face of said front section at a point removed from the vertical center of such section whereby the sections of the waist band are connected together in overlapping relation, and said belt having its non-elastic portions provided with coacting means for detachably connecting the ends of the belt together at the front of said front waist band section.
