CHARLES MARCUS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINATION SHIRT AND VEST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 9, 1915..
Application filed February 5, 1914:. SeriaI N 0.- 816,731.
T (125 whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES MARoUs, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and 1mproved Combination Shirt and Vest, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
.This invention relates to an improved garment and more particularly to a com bined shirt and vest.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a shirt with vest fronts or sections in such a manner as to eliminate the necessity of wearing a vest separate and apartfrom the shirt and with an independent back, the invention more particularly residing in the construction of the rest fronts and novel ways and means for attaching the same to the vest.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the peculiar combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed, it being also an object to provide a garment which is simple in construction, durable and efficient in use.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shirt having the vest sections secured thereto in accordance with one form of the invention, part of one section or front being turned down to disclose its method of attachment; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing a modified way of attaching the fronts in position; Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken at the waist line through the belt strips of either form of the invention; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional. view showing the manner of connecting one of the vest fronts or sections to the shirt.
In carrying out my invention 1 provide a shirt 10, in one form of the invention, with buttons 11 constituting means to removably connect or attach the vest fronts or sections 12 to overlie the front portion of the shirt in the manner of an ordinary vest exclusive of the back of the latter. As shown, these buttons or means for removably attaching the vest sections to the shirt are arranged along each shoulder and beneath the armpits or adjacent to the bottom portions of the armholes. The vest fronts or sections are connected in the usual way, as shown at 13, but where attached to the shirt through the instrumentality of the buttons 11 are provided with elongated closed flies or blind hems 1% with a plurality of open ings 15 for engaging the rcspectivcbuttons and permitting the convenient attachment and detachment of the vest sections irrespective of whether the shirt is on or off the person. A small blind hem 16 is pro vided at the side of each vest section where connected to the shirt at the bottom portions of the armholes, and said vest sections are retained against the body at the bottom by means of belt strips 17 which extend around the back of the body or waist and are connected as by means of a buckle 18 permitting the proper adjustment. The closed flies or blind hems consist in turning the top or side edges of the sections as shown at 19, or otherwise providing an inner part which is stitched to the outer part to inclose the buttons when the latter are engaged through the openings 15, thus add ing to the neatness and appearance of the article of apparel.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings the vest sections are stitched to the shirt at the front portions of the armholes, as shown at 20, and at the sides of the shirt beneath the armholes, as shown at 21, and in lieu of a plurality of buttons or fasteners along the shoulders a single button 22 is provided. The top edge of each vest section is provided with a blind hem 23 having a single button opening 24 adjacent the free end, so that in each form of the invention sufiicicnt spaces are allowed between the points of attachment to accommodate the shoulder straps of a pair of braces or suspenders.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a shirt and vest sections for the front thereof; of connecting means between the front sections of the vest and the shirt, said connecting means embodying buttons carried by the shirt and blind hems formed with the edge portions of the vest sections and provided with buttonholes for engagement with the buttons to permit convenient buttoning and unbuttoning of the sections as Well as to preclude outer edges and removably connected to the shirt at the shoulder portions, the connecting means being hidden beneath the sections and providing intervening spaces, as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my 1:) name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
CHARLES MARCUS.
