S. E. REINHARD.
COMBINED GOAT AND VEST. No. 399,436 Patented Mar. 12; 1889.
llnirn STATES ATENT Qrrrcn.
SAMFEL E. REINIIARD, OF BALTHTORE, MARYLAND.
COMBINED COAT AND VEST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 399,436, dated March 12, 1889.
Application filed November 13, 1888. Serial No. 290,724. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. REINHARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of l\[aryland,have invented a new and useful Improvement in (ombi1iation-Garments, of which the following is a specification.
M y invention has reference to combinationgarments suitable for male or female wear, as hereinafter described, illustrated in the drawings, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference point out similar parts in each figure, Figure 1 is an inside View of a combination-garment embodying my invention, showing one front side of a vest as it would appear when worn extended over the breast, the opposite section being folded backward entirely within the pocket of the garment, portions of said pocket being broken away. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view on the line- 1 7 I will describe my invention as applicable to a thin coat for mens wear, although I do not desire to be understood as limiting myself to such use. It is equally as serviceable on garments for womens and childrens wear.
The folding wings, which I hereby denominate and illustrate as front sections of avest, may be of any form or design that taste or convenience may dictate. For instance, in childrens garments, in lieu of the vest-sections, as shown, there may be fronts of what is generally known as a skirtwaist, which may be plaited or ornamented in any suitable style. For womens apparel, instead of the sections of a vest, as illustrated in the drawings, there may be front sections of a basque or of any suitable style of costumeappropriate for female wear.
In the drawings, A represents a sack coat having a back, a, and front pieces, a c. To said front pieces and on either side of the back a is the front section, B, of a vest adapted to be folded forwardly over the breast of the wearer. The rear edges, 1'), of these sections 13 (which are usually attached to a vest-back) are respectively sewed to a front piece, a, of the garment near and adjacent: to the opening of a pocket, presently more particularly described The sections B have their collars upwardly extended, terminating in atab, T, which is supplied with a button-hole, loop, hook, or any suitable device that takes onto an ii'itermeshing fastener of any convenient description. I show in the drawings a buttonhole, 71., at the end of the extension T and button 71 upon the coat. Said fastening devices are so arranged as to be connected whether the sections B are within or without the pockets. a
The front pieces, a u, have a lining, L, common to such garments, which lining is usuall y stitched continuously on a line, 5.
In carrying out my invention, the lining is only connected at portions of the line .5 to the fronts, leaving upper spaces unattached, that form plackets p of pockets 1, into which pockets the espective vest-sections can be inserted and be entirely covered over, as illustrated at the left of the drawings, when not intended for use. At the upper part of the interlining L below the coat-collar, on each side, is a slot, s, through which, when the section 13 is within the pocket, is passed the tab T, enabling it.- to be fastened to the button 71, by which means the whole of said section is maintained in a flat position within said pocket and kept from falling or folding within the pocket. When the vest-sections are employed outside of the pockets, they are kept in proper position by being connected outwardly by means of the button-hole tabs and buttons, as plainly indicated at the right in the drawings.
From the foregoing description, in connection with the drawings, the nature and object and the practice of my invention will be readily understood by all familiar with analogous articles of apparel.
Myinvention provides an exceedingly neat and useful garment that can be used simply as a coat or wrap, and readily changed so as to present the appearance of a coat and vest, or wrap and basque, said rest or basque being kept adjusted in proper position by means of the tab with its fasteners, either within or without the pocket-receptacles llaving now fully described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The within-descri bed conibination-garment, having a back, a, front pieces, a a, each provided with a lining, L, at the inner edge of which is an opening to form plaekets of pockets P, and vest-sections B, provided with extending button-holed tabs T, all in combination with slots 8 of the lining L above the arn1- hole of the garment, substantially as described 10 and illustrated, as and for the purpose indicated.
SAMUEL E. REINIIARD. XVitnesses:
SAML. H. JACOBSON, ANSON S. TAYLOR.
