To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, KATHARINE From, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Covered Elastic Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to wearing apparel, and more particularly to fastening means.

' An object of the invention is to provide a novel and practicable fastener including a covering means for concealing fasteners. An object, also, is to provide a fastener of practically universal adaptation in securing various feminine articles of wear, such, for instance, as shoulder straps, girdles, furs, hat bands, coats, bandeaux, and garters.

Another object is to provide a fastener and fastener cover of extreme simplicity and low cost of manufacture, and to provide a fastenor and fastener cover which may be read ily applied to various articles of apparel and which may be incorporated, in some cases, as inherent features of articles of wearing apparel.

Other objects and advantages will be made manifest in the following specification of embodiments of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Various articles of feminine wearing apparel are adapted to be simply drawn around the head, body, shoulder or limb and fastened in a manner to be comfortable and also preferably to be figure-fitting, and an object of my present invention is to provide means for facilitating the fastening of various articles of feminine apparel in a neat and attractive manner to provide for the ready fastening or unfastening and at the same time to obtain an effective and practically concealed fastener.

lVhile my invention is shown, in the present case, as associated with a girdle G, it is to be understood that this is but exemplary, as the invention may be combined with various other articles of'feminine apparel, and indeed may be combined with articles of masculine apparel. p

The inventlon embodies a coverstructure preferably consisting of a back part 2, having a suitable degree of rigidity or stiffness to provide a base or mounting for various and suitable types of fasteners. The cover structure includes a front flap or wing 3, foldable as along the line 4 to open or close as to the mounting or back 2, and the front and back are designed to be fastened in closed position, which is seen in Figure 1, by suitable means. The cover securing means may consist of simple male or lug portions 5, adapted to snap into socket members 6, suitably disposed to be matched when the cover members 2 and 3 are closed one onto the other. Fixed upon the back or base 2 are fastening means, a form of which is here shown as including buttons 7, mounted on the face of the back 2 and therefore being readily accessible when the foldable front or flap 3 is swung open.

The article of wearing apparel which is to be secured and which, in the present case, as stated, is shown in the form of a girdle G, is provided with attaching means of a type complementary to the fastening elements 7, here shown as, but not necessarily consisting of, buttons 7 The girdle is, in the present case, shown as provided with one or more loops 10, as seen in Figures 3 and 4, and these loops are adapted to be passed over the buttons 7 after the article of ap parel, as the girdle G, is drawn around a waist. The buttons 7 therefore form common holding means for the loops 10 on each end of the girdle G.

Preferably, and as determined by the nature of the article, the loops 10 are elastic, so that, in the case of garters, bandeaux and girdles, these articles will be yieldingly drawn around the portion of the figure upon which they may be mounted with a desirable degree of tension and at the same time, and especially in the case of girdles, the article will be adapted to freely give or conform to the position of the limb or body during movement or posture of the figure.

The attaching loops 10, when such form of means is employed, may be laid in hems 11 of the article of wearing apparel, as

shown in Figures 2, 3 and 4:, or, in some cases, the invention may be embodied inthe form of loops 10 secured to a piece of tape 12, or other suitable material, which is adapted to be stitched or otherwise fastened as to an end of a girdle or other article, as shown in Figure 5.

Thus, I have provided an apparel fasten ing structure consisting of a covering means including the back or base 2 and the front flap 3 foldably attached to the base, and which parts are adapted to be temporarily secured as by snap or other fasteners, and the base part of which isprovided with means complementary to other fastening means attached to the article of apparel to besecured about the person.

To be combined with or attached to the article of'apparel which is to be fastened is the attaching means here shown as consisting of the loops 10 to be passed over the buttons 7. It is to be understood that, while reference is made herein to loops and buttons as means for securing the article of apparel to the cover structure 2-8, I am not to be limited to this particular type of fastening means, as obviously various other types of attaching means may be utilized, since the broad object is to provide a covering structure having a part of fastening means complementary to other parts of fastening means carried by the article to be fastened. From the above it will be seen that I have safe, and at the same time ornamental man-' ner.

The covering means may be inherently ornamental, or, as is shown in Figure 1, a bow B, or other ornamental element, may be secured to and carried by a part of the covering structure.

Further embodiments, modifications and variations may be resorted to within the principle of the invention.

WVhat is claimed is:

1. A covered fastener comprising a stiff back, two buttons secured against the front face of the stiff back, a cover foldably connected to the lower side of the back and adapted to fold up and cover the buttons and snap fasteners for holding the cover in folded position.

2. The combination with an article of wearing apparel having rings or loops of a fastener comprising a stiff back having buttons upon its front face, a cover foldably connected to the lower edge of the stiff back and adapted to conceal the buttons and snap fasteners for holding the cover closed.
