Specification of Letters Iratent.
Application filed March 29, 1913., Serial No. 757,510.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM E. HEBBARD, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to garments having adjustable waistbands, and has to do with the construction and arrangement of the waistband, the drawing member for adjusting the waistband, and the fastening devices therefor, by which a garment may be produced more convenient in use, more simple and durable in construction, and more neat and handsome in appearance, than adjustable garments heretofore designed.
While my invention is applicable to any garment having an adjustable waistband, it is particularly well adapted to the waistbands of blouses, and for the purpose of illustration I will describe the invention as applied to a boys blouse. It will be understood however that this is merely vfor the purpose of illustration and that the more general application of the invention to any garment having an adjustable waistband is contemplated by the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a front view of a blouse containing the invention, showing the various parts unfastened and open; Fig. 2 is a front view of the lower part of the blouse, showing the parts in closed and fastened position; Fig. 3 shows the position of the drawing member when fastened, but before the front of the garment is closed and fastened; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line fir-4: of Fig. 2 with all the parts in closed and fastened position.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the body of the blouse, and a the waistband, which may be formed in the usual way by a hem, providing a tubular waistband for containing the drawing member, which may be adrawing string or strap or any preferred form of drawing member. The tubular waistband a is made with an opening I) through its front face close to, but a short distance removed from one end of the waistband. I
lVithin the tubular waistband a is a drawing member 0, consisting as herein shown of a tape or strap, one end of which is provided with a series of button-holes d, which constitute fastening members, and the other end of which is secured in any convenient manner, as by sewing, at the opposite end of the waistband. A fastening member such as the button e is secured to the waistband between the opening Z) and the end of the waistband, and the opposite end of the waistband is provided with a complementary fastening member, such as the button-hole 7, which is preferably formed not only through the waistband but also through theiixed end i of thedrawing member 0. On the inner or reverse side of the waistband near the end at which the opening 6 is located, is a button or similar fastening member 9 to hold'the free end of the drawing member after the same has been adjusted as hereinafter described.
The operation of the device is as follows: The wearer of the garment first draws the free end of the drawing member 0 through the opening Z), thus puckering or gathering the waistband until the latter is of the desired length. The button-hole d which then registers, or most nearly registers, with button e is buttoned over the button 6. By this device the waistband may, by a single drawing end, and without the necessity of tying as is usual, be adjusted to the desired length, and as the single drawing member extends all the way around the garment the waistband may be evenly and uniformly gathered all the way around. The free end of the drawing member may then be passed around the edge of the garment and attached by one or more of the button-holes cl to'the button on the inner or rear side of the waistband (Figs. 3 and i), thus holding the loose end out of the way and out of sight, and preventing the possibilityof a dangling end. The opposite end of the waistband and of the drawing member is then secured in place by placing the button-hole f over button 6, the parts then being in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 4. It will thus be seen that the button 6 constitutes a single fastening member which, without additional button or fastener, holds both the free or adjustable end of the drawing strap by means of one of the button-holes d, and also the opposite end of the waistband by means of button-hole f, and as the button 6 is attached to one end of the waistband, and the drawing member 0 is fastened at the other end of the waistband at or near the butt0nhole 7", the same single fastening member 6 Patented Dec. 15, 1914.
rricn holds both ends of the Waistband and both ends of drawing member. It will be noticed further that when fastened as shown in Figs. 2 and 4 a straight pull tending to separate the two ends of the drawing member c is transmitted directly from one end to the other, as the two ends are connected by the single fastening button e, instead of being transmitted through any part of the waistband or of the garment. Furthermore, by employing the single fastening member 6 for securing both ends of the drawing member 0 and both ends of the waistband a, the adjustable end of the drawing member when applied to the button 6 will be locked in engagement with said button by buttoning over it the button-hole f at the opposite end of the waistband. Thus, when the button-hole f is applied to the button 6 on top of the button-holes (Z, the adjustable end of strap a will be securely held between the two ends of the waistband and cannot be removed, or become dislodged, from the button without first removing the button-hole f in the garment.
I claim:
In a garment, a tubular waistband having an opening through its outer surface, close to one end of the waistband, which becomes the underlying end when the parts are closed, a fastening member on said underlying end immediately adjacent to said opening and between said opening and the end of the waistband, a complementary fastening member at the other end of the waistband, which becomes the overlying end when the parts are closed, adapted to engage the first mentioned fastening member on the underlying end, and a drawing member in said tubular waistband, one end of which is secured to the overlying end of the waistband, the other end of said drawing member projecting through said aperture on the outer side of the underlying end of the waistband, and being provided with a series of fastening members adapted adjustably to engage the said adjacent fastening member on the underlying end of the waistband, whereby the same fastening member on the underlying end secures both the adjustable end of the drawing member and overlying end of the waistband, and the adjustable end of drawing member is secured to said fastoning member between the underlying and the overlying ends of the waistband.
Signed by me at Boston, Massachusetts, this 24th day of March, 1913.
WILLIAM E. HEBBARD.
