Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 5, 1912.
Application filed December 22, 1911. Serial No. 667,296.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM H. BnooKnR, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Blouse, of which the following is a specification.
l/ly invention relates to a garment of the order of a blouse, its object being to adjust the waist of the same.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific arrangement and organization shown and described.
The figure represents a perspective view partly broken away, of a blouse embodying my invention, referring to which A designates a blouse which excepting the feature of the invention applied thereto is of usual formation. In the lower end of the blouse or waist line thereof is the hem B within which is the band, tape or strap C, one end of which latter is permanently secured or fastened as at D to said hem on the front portion E of the blouse. The other end C of said strap opposite to the fastening D, protrudes through the hem on the other front portion F of the blouse for which purpose the inner wall of the hem is cut through, forming the outlet or passage G for said string or strap. To the outer wall of said hem on the inner side thereof is secured the button H which is additional or supplemental to the button J which is secured to the portion E of the blouse and is adapted to be engaged by the button-hole K on the portion F of the blouse whereby the waist of the garment may be held in closed condition as usual. In the end C of the strap is a plurality of button-holes L either of which is designed to receive the button H so as to hold the string or strap C in adjusted position.
The operation is asfollows :The blouse is opened by unbuttoning the front portions E. F. as usual, when the strap C is accessible, said strap-then being drawn out through the passage G, whereby as the opposite end thereof is a fixture as at D, the hem and consequently the waist of the garment is drawn together or contracted the required extent and so adjusted to the size of the wearer and caused to clroop from the waist usual in a garment of the kind. hen this is accomplished, the strap is connected with the button H by placing the proper buttonhole of the former on the latter, the effect of which is the immovability of the strap and the preservation of the adjustment of the waist of the garment. The end C of the strap may then be tucked under the hem or adjacent portion of the garment, when the front portions E. F. of the latter are closed and buttoned, the button H being concealed and with it the end 0 of the strap and the passage Gr of the hem, while to all intents and purposes, the garment is unaffected in appearance while possessing the advantages of the adjusting fea tures presented by the strap, the hem, the auxiliary button and the plurality of button-holes in said strap, the adjustability not being disturbed while the garment is being worn. It is evident that the loose end C of said strap may be fitted on the button H and so prevented from hanging or exposing itself. The blouse may be washed without removing the strap. Furthermore, the strap will remain buttoned without liability to open under ordinary circumstances which is not the case with cords that are secured by tying or knots.
It is manifest that the blouse is designed more particularly to be worn by boys but to this I do not limit myself.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A blouse provided with separated front portions, means for closing the same and having a hem at the waist portion, a shirr strap freely occupying said hem and having one of its ends permanently secured to one of said front portions of the blouse, an auxiliary button on the other front portion thereof, said hem having in the latter named on itself and fastened by either of said pluportion a passage through which the free rality of button holes to said auxiliary butend portion of said strap is movable, said ton beyond said passage.
end portion of the strap being provided WILLIAM H. BROOKER. Y with a plurality of buttonholes with either Witnesses:
of Which said auxiliary button may be en- JOHN A. EIDERSHEIM,
gaged and being adapted to be looped back N. BUSSINGER.
