MATERNITY SKIRT OR DRESS.
Application filed November 20, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, BERNARD Scrrirr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Man hattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved llfaternity Skirt or Dress, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved maternity skirt or dress arranged to provide convenient adjustment of the waist of the garment.
In order to accomplish the desired result the garment is open at the front and is provided with a waistband having nonelastic front portions and a gathered hem at the back, and draw strings in the said hem and secured at the middle of the back and extending out of the hem at the forward ends thereof, and a retaining means on the said front portions of the waistband and to which the outer ends of the draw strings can be tied.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a front elevation of the gar ment partly opened up; Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross section of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 8 is a similar view of the same on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. a is a sectional plan view of the garment along the waist and with the front closed.
The garment in its entirety combines a skirt A, a waist B and a waistband C, to which the upper end of the skirt A. and the lower end of the waist B are secured (see Figs. 2 and 3.) The waist B is open at the front and the upper portion of the skirt A is open at the front, and overlapping front flaps D are thus provided having fastening devices E, such as hooks and eyes, to fasten the flaps together. Similar overlapping flaps D are on the front of the waist B and the said flaps D are provided with fastening devices (not shown) to fasten the flaps D together.
The waistband C consists of front bands C of non-elastic material and adapted to overlap at the front ends when the garment is closed, and the said front ends of the bands C are provided with suitable fasten- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing devices F for fastening the front ends together. The back of the waistband C is in the form of a gathered hem C (preferably a double one, as shown) and in this hem extend draw strings G secured at their inner ends to the hem at the middle there of. The outer ends of the draw strings extend through the open front end of the hem C and are tied to retaining devices, preferably in the form of rings H attached to the inner ends of the non-elastic bands C It will be noticed that when the draw strings G are untied from the rings H the gathers of the hem may be gradually drawn out to lengthen the waistband and thus provide the desired compensation at the waist according to the condition of the wearer. When the desired adjustment in the hem C has been made the outer ends of the draw strings are again tied to the rings H to hold the hem C in the adjusted position.
It is understood that the bands C are joined at their rear ends with the open forward ends of the hem C thus providing a continuous waistband, of which the rear portion can be lengthened or shortened.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the desired adjustment is only made at the back of the garment and not at the front to insure at all times a proper hang of the garment and without producing any undue strains on the abdominal region of the wearer.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A maternity garment provided with a waistband open at the front and having non-elastic front portions adapted to be fastened together at the front ends, the waistband having a gathered hem on its inner face at the back and draw strings in the said hem and secured at their inner ends to the said hem at the middle of the back, the outer ends of the draw strings extending out through the forward open ends of the hem to allow of gathering the hem more or less. and retaining means attached to the said front portions of the waistband and to which the outer ends of each of the drawstrings are tied after the hem is gathered to the desired extent.
2. Amaternity garment provided with a waist band open at the front and adapted to have the ends thereof secured together,
draw strings is secured after the hem has been gathered to the desired extent.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
BERNARD SCHIFF.
