STROUSE St CO., OF SAME PLACE.
CORSET.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 257,809, dated May 9, 1882, Application led March 6, l1882. (Model.)
To all whoml tt may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX ADLER, of New Haven, in the county ot New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented Vnew Improvements in Corsets; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with ac companying drawings and the letters ot' reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, and which said drawings constitute part ot' this speccation, and represent, in i Figure l, an outside View; Fig. 2, an inside view; Fig. 3, a transverse section.
This invention relates to an improvement in corsets, with special reference to the side or hip section, thc object being to make practically an open or expansible hip, but provide a cover for the opening which shall, in whatever position the parts may be, form, when on the person, a part ofthe corset over the opening, substantially asit` the opening were filled, the object being to overcome'difiiculties which exist in open-sided corsets, producing discoml'ort to the wearer as well as defects in the shape; and the invention consists in the construction ofthe corset, as more full y hereinafter described.
A represents the front portion, and B the rear portion, ot' the side ot' thepcorset; C, the central portion, which starts from under the arm and runs downward over the hip. From about the waist-line et fthe side portions,-A B, .are cut away respectively to the front and rear, and detached from the central portion, so as to be free to expand or contract, according to the-shape ot the hip of the wearer. The central part, C, extends down below the wais tline a to the bottom, and at the line a. extends so as to underlie or overlie'the two parts A B and practically close the opening between the two partsA B. This part C has stays D running from the top directly down substantially throughout its length, so as to cause it to conform to the shape ot' the body'ot' the wearer. The two parts A B are provided with straps E F, or other suitable device lfor adjustably attaching them over the hip, to bring the parts of the corsetinto the proper shape on the hip,
and when so drawn together and on the person the lower or wider part, d d, of the central portion fills the opening, and on the person has substantially the saine effect as if the parts were stitched together, and, in fact, no side opening.
By this construction an expansible hip-corset is produced, which permits it to be adjusted tothe peculiar shape of the hips of the wearer, but when once adj usted to be substantially, so far as the wearer is concerned, a close hip.
It is better and I prefer that the lower or broader part ot' the central portion, C, should lie upon the inside, yet it may be upon `the outside.
,The broader part, or wings,77 as they may be called, may also be stayed, it desired.
It" preferred, the central part, C, above the waist-line may be cut with the two portions A B, and the lapping wings attached to the central part below the waist-line. I therefore bythe term portions AB C77 do not wish to be understood as limiting them to detached separate pieces, it only being essential that` the front and rear parts of the hip-section shall be cut away from about the waist-line to form the opening, with the intermediate or central part expanded down between the cutaway edges, and so as to lap upon the two sides ot' the opening, and` stays extending from beneath the arm between the front and rear portions down over the central or hip part.
I ol'aim- A corset constructed with'the two side portions A B, cut away respectively to the front and rear trom the waist-line downward, conibined with the central portion, C, between the said two portions A B, detached from them .below the waist-line, expanded to lap upon the two parts AB, with a series of stays on the central part, C, extending from under the arm down over thehip, and an adjustable device to connect the two parts A B over the hip, substantially as described.
