Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAN IEL KoPs, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in ApparelCorsets, of which the following is a specification.

In Letters Patent, No. 1,082,273, granted to me December 23, 1913, I have shown and described an apparel corset adapted both to properly fit and support the lower portions of the abdomen of the wearer, and also to properly confine the upper fleshy portions of the limbs, in order to produce the prevailing straight front and side effects in the figure of the wearer.

In this garment there is a depending front member attached along one side to a portion of the corset body, and along an upper edge to the corset body at a material distance from the lower front edge. thereof, so as to permit the lower front portions to be adjusted to the abdomen of the wearer, and providing a pocket between the front depending member and the adjacent lower front portions of the corset body, and in which are placed suitable compressing means or tension devices for determining the posifront portion of the corset, and consequently the pressure upon and the support afforded tension devices comprised a .plurality of straps secured at their ends distant from the front edge of the corset and preferably caused to converge to which they were secured together by suitable eyelets, any one of which was adapted to fit over a stud or button secured in the lower front portion of the corset steel to adjust the position thereof for use. In this structure, manifestly, the adjustment of'the lower front portion of the corset body cannot be effected while the corset is in position on the body of the wearer.

Now, in carrying out my present invention, I employ a corsetsomewhat similarly constructed to that shown and described in the Letters Patent aforesaid, that is to say, my improved apparel corset preferably comprises corset body halves, in each of which there is a depending front member secured along one edge to a part of the lower front body, and also along its upper edge to the lower front portion of the corset body at an appreciable distance above of the corset the abdomen of the wearer: As shown and described in this patent, these their free ends, at

the lower edge thereof, the said front depending member preferably comprising a continuation of a depending skirt extending from the rear medial line forward, so as to complete the continuity of the skirt to the front medial line of the corset.

In the space between the front depending member and the adjacent underlying part of the lower front portion of the corset body. I also employ a suitable tension device and associated therewith means whereby this tension device is adjustable both circumferentially and longitudinally of the garment from the exterior thereof when the same is in position on the body of the wearer, so as to determine the position of the lower end of the front steels to vary and adjust the same to position and obtain the necessary pressure both inwardly and upwardly and consequently the desired support for the lower portions of the abdomen, as will be hereinafter more particularly described.

In the drawing, Figure l is an elevation of an apparel corset comprising my present invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation showing the inner portions of the corset at the front thereof, to illustrate the present invention. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the same parts as shown in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation on line 00, a, Fig. 3.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, my present invention comprises an apparel corset in which each corset body half. as is customary, includes a body portion 10. in which, at the front, a suitable-steel 11 is fitted, and at the rear are series ofeyelets, so that at the front the steels may be connected by suitable clasps and at the rear the halves of the corset connected-by laces 13. Also in suitable positions, the corset body halves are provided with boning, indicated at 14, or-other similar and suitable support members.

As illustrated, each corset body half is preferably provided with a depending skirt 15, extending from the rear medial line thereof forwardly. Also each corset body half includes a front depending member or front skirt extension 16 connected along one side edge to the adjacent edge of the depending skirt, on a line 17, and also along pending member or skirt extension-completing the continuity of the depending skirt to the front medial line of the corset. This depending front member, therefore, overlies the adjacent lower front portion of the corset, so that the latter is independent thereof and may be adjusted to properly fit and support the lower portion of the abdomen of the wearer.

In the present case, as is illustrated, the lower front portion of the corset underlying the said depending front member or front skirt extension, is preferably divided, as indicated at 19, so that the lower front portion of each corset body half is made in two parts, which are preferably of different dimensions, the front or larger part lying adjacent the front steel, while the smaller part 21 is spaced apart therefrom.

The lower front part 20 of the corset body is attached to the overlying skirt extension along the line 18, and is otherwise free therefrom, while the lower front part 21 of the corset body is attached to the overlying skirt extension along the line 18, and also along the side edge at the line indicated at 34. Between the'lower front parts of the corset body and the overlying front depending member or skirt extension, I employ a tension device, which, as illustrated, is preferably a strap of suitable elastic material, indicated at 22. One end of this strap is secured to the lower front portion of the corset body on the line 23, while the opposite or inner end of the tension strap 22 is provided with a row or series of eyelets 24. A portion of this strap lies be-, tween the lower front part 20 of the corset body and the adjacent portion of the overlying skirt extension, and is sufficiently long for its eyeleted end to lie between the lower front part 21 and the overlying adjacent portion of the skirt extension.

Secured to the lower front part 21 of the corset body and lying between the same and the adjacent overlying portion of the skirt extension, is an auxiliary tension strap 25. This is secured along one edge to the adjacent part of the corset body, and at its free edge is provided with a series of eyelets 26, and preferably lies entirely between the lower front part 21 of the corset body half and the adjacent overlying potion of the skirt extension. also through the eyelets 29, provided therefor, in the lower portion of the corset body adjacent the part 21 andbelow the same, in order that the tension on the stra 22 and consequently the pressure exerte against the abdomen of the wearer on the lower portion of the corset steel may be readily adjusted exteriorly of the garment, after the same has been placed in position on the body of the wearer. This, as will be apparent, is accomplished by merely drawing the .lace28 sufficiently tight to place the desired that by pulling the laces 28 from the exterior of the garment the tension strap will be drawnboth circumferentially and laterally in an upward direction relatively to the garment to produce a tension both circumferentially and longitudinally of the garment, due, as will be understood, to the fact that the position of the eyelets 29 is below the eyelets 26, and not in line with the tension straps in any of their adjustable positions. Inasmuch as the free end of the tension strap 22 extends and is adjustable between the lower front part 21 and the overlying portion of the skirt extension, this free end of the tension strap will not only be concealed but is also prevented from coming directly into contact with the body of the wearer, in the adjustment of the strap to position, in the use of the garment.

The front depending members 32 are downward continuations of the corset body proper, and are secured, respectively, to the front portions of the corresponding skirt extensions 1.6 along the lines of sewing indicated at 33\. and suitably secured to the front depending members 32, and consequently indirectly connected to the front skirt extensions 16, I employ suitable hose supporters 30 As is also indicated in the drawing, in suitable positions, depending from the skirt members, I employ other hose supporters, indicated at 31.

I claim as my invention:

1. In an apparel corset, and in each corset body half, a tension strap connected at one edge to the lower front portion of the corset body half and extending rearwardly, means secured to the free edge of the tension strap for determining the position thereof and thereby producing a tension both circumferentially and longitudinally of the garment, and means for concealing the free end of the tension strap. f V

2. In an apparel corset, a corset body half, a depending member permanently secured along one side edge from the lower edge of the corset body upwardly, and at its upper part of the corset body and the adjarent overlying portion of the said member, and means for ad usting the said tension device,

both circumferentially and longitudinally of the garment, exteriorly thereof, after the same has been placed in position on the body of the wearer.

3. In an apparel corset, a corset body half having a depending skirt extending from the rear edge forwardly, a member secured at one edge to the forward edge of the skirt extension to complete the continuity thereof to the front medial line of the corset and secured at its upper edge along a line a substantial distance from the lower front edge of the corset body so as to be free there rom from the front edge to the said side edge and from the lower edge to the said top edge, the lower front part of the corset body underlying the adjacent portion of the said member and being free therefrom, a tension device secured at one end to the lower front part of the corset body adjacent the front steel and extending rearwardly therefrom, an'auxiliary tension device secured in the lower front part of the corset body distant from the front edge thereof and also between the lower front part of the corset body and the overlying portion of the said member, and a lace for connecting the adjacent edges of the said tension devices and passing through the corset body so as to be adjusted to determine the relative positions of the said tension devices from the exterior of the corset, the construction being such that the adjacent ends o the said tension devices are adapted to be concealed between the lower front parts of the corset body and the overlying adjacent portions of the said member. I 4. In an apparel corset, a corset body having a depending skirt extending from the rear edge forwardly, a member secured at one edge to the forward edge of the skirt extension to complete the continuity thereof to the front medial line of the corset, and secured at its upper edge along a line a substantial distance from the lower front edge of the corset body so as to be free therefrom from the front edge of the said side edge and from the lower edge to the said top edge, the lower front portion of the corset body underlying the adjacent part of the said member and free therefrom and divided into two parts, a tension strap secured at one end to the lower front portion of the corset body, and lying between one part thereof and the adjacent overlying portion of the said member and extending between the said divided parts of the lower front corset body with its free end between the other lower front part of the corset body and the adjacent'overlying portion of the said member,'an auxiliary tension strap secured to the corset body and lying between the said other lower front part thereof and the adjacent portion of the overlying member, eyelets secured in the adjacent ends of the said tension straps, eyelets'also secured in the corset body adjacent the auxiliary tension strap and below the same, and a lace threaded through the said eyelets and extending to the outf side of the garment so that thereby the said tension strap may be adjusted both circumferentially and longitudinally of the garment from the exterior thereof.
