Specification of Letters Patent. n

Application led May 26, 1915. Serial No. 30,501.
To all whom t may concern.' y
Beit known that I, DANIEL Kors, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Apparel-Corsets, of which the following is a specification. v
My present invention relates to that 'type of apparel corsets in which there are inin position relatively to the cluded both a tension or self-reducing strap and a skirt depending from the lower edge of the corset body proper. I am aware that heretofore apparel corsets of this general nature have been constructed, as, for 'ex-` ample, the` corset shown and described in Letters Patent No. 1,020,764, granted to me March 19, 1912. In this type of corset, the front portion of the skirt is divided and the tension or selfreducing strap is secured along one edge to the corset body an appreciable distance from the front steel andis adapted to be adjustably attached to the lower part of the `front steel, and extends over the divided portion of the skirt, there `being hose supporters suitably attached to the 4lower front edge of the skirt and to the extremity of the depending part of the tension or self-reducing strap. Inl this, and all other forms of apparel corsets in which la depending tension or self-reducing strap has been employed with a depending skirt, the skirt portion proper conforms to the body of the'wearer in a standing as well as ina seated position, and as will be readily understood, when in a standing position the pro-` longations of the tension or self-reducing straps are maintained in position by thepull exerted on the same through the hose supporters commonly employed in connection withthem. When in a seated position, however, this pull upon the hose supporters being relieved, the tendency of the prolongations of the tension or self-reducing straps is to wrinkle or work up and cause a corresponding unevenness in' the vgown and outer garments of the wearer at, or approx` imately at the line of demarcation between the body and the limbs.
The object of my invention is to overcome this diiiiculty, and to maintain the prolongations of the tension or self-reducing straps dependingy front portions of the corset skirts. In so doing, I preferably provide a sleeve in the lower front portion of the corset skirts, through garment, each corset body .tance from the front steel. Aor normally free end each tension strap is i which the prolongation of the corresponding passes, 'in Y tension or self-reducing strap order to maintain this prolongation in place relatively to the othery parts of t -e garment. The corset made in accordance with my present inventionr will be hereinafter more particularly described in connectionwith the accompanying drawing, in which- Figurey l isa front elevation ofan'apparel corset embodying vmy present invention.- Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation of the lower front with steels 12-l3 alongtheir front edges,
the same being provided with clasp fasteners by which these edges may be connected, and each corsetv body half along its rear edge is also, as is usual, provided with series of eyelets 14 for Areceiving a lace 15, by which, as is customary, the corset body halves are connected at the rear. In this half is provided with a depending skirt 16 extending from the rear to the front medial line thereof, the front portion ofthe skirt of each corset body half being'indicated at 17.
r`Associated with each corset body half, I
" employ a tension or self-reducing strap indicated at 18. At one edge, each of these straps is connected to the corset body by a lineeof stitches 19 at a predetermined dis- At its opposite fitted with a series of eyelets 20 any one of which may be engaged with a stud hook 21 secured in the lower end of the corset steel, in order'to adjustably connect this otherwise free end of the tension or self-reducing strap in position. Each tension or self-reducing strap also includes a prolongation or downwardly extending member 22, to the extremity of which a hose supporter 23 is connected in any suitable manner.
In the lower front portion of the skirt of each corset body half I embody an overlying member 24, secured in this part vofV the skirt by lines of sewing 25 and 26,
portion of on-e corset body half. F 1g. 3 is a cross section on line-x, w, F 1g. 2,.
respectively, so as to form a sleeve with the this sleeve being indicated at 27 in Fig. 3, and through which the prolongation 22 of the corresponding tension or self-reducing strap and its hose supporter extends so a predetermined portion of these members lie within the sleeve 27.
inasmuch as the lower front portion of the corset skirt will conform to the body of the wearer, in a standing as well 'as in a sittingp'osition, it will be apparent that when in a sitting position, notwithstanding kthe release of the tension on the hose supporter 23, the lower front portion of the skirt will maintain the prolongation of the tension or self-reducing strap in place and prevent the same from working up and producingwrinkles or bulges in the 4garment of the wearer. is also indicated in the drawing in this case, the; lower front portion of the skirt of each corset body half maybe provided on both sides of the sleeve with inserts 2S and Q9 made of elastic and inelastic 'material Also, as is customary, the front portion of each skirt at the lower front edge thereof may be provided with a hose supporter indicated at 30 in Fig. 2. Still furthermore, as also indicated in the drawing, the upper portion of each tension or self-reducing strap may be reinforced by the member indicated at 31, which at its upper edge conforms to the upper edge of the tension or self-reducing strap and eX- tends therefrom to a line indicated at 32.
t will be understood that the hose supporter employed in conjunction with the prolongation of the tension strap may, as
l indicated in Figs. 2 andB, be merely attached at its upper end to the lower endl of the prolongation of the tension strap and may extend straight downwardly and be connected by a suitable clasp tothe upper portion of the hose, or as indicated in Fig. et, one end of a web yor strap 33 maybe attached to the lower end ofthe prolongation of the tension strap and the opposite end of this web or strap attached to the corset skirt, and the hose supporter 23 suitably connected thereto. As shown in this ligure, this opposite end of the web is attached to the lower portion of the inner member comprising part of the sleeve 2li,
Copies of but as will be understood may be attached in any suitable place to the corset skirt.
I claim as my invention.
1. In an apparel corset and in each corset body half thereof, a skirt depending therefrom, a tension `strap secured at one edge on a line distant from the front steel, means for adjustably securing the opposite end of the tension strap at the front of the corset body, a hose supporter prolongation depending from said tension strap, and means secured lin said skirt and between which and a portion of the skirt the said prolongation of the tension strap passes.
l 2. In an apparel corset and in each corset body half thereof, a skirt depending therefrom, a tension strap secured at one edge by a line of stitches distant from the front steel, means for securing the opposite end of the tension strap to the lower front portion of the corset body, a hose supporter prolongation depending from the said tension strap, a sleeve formed in the lower front portion of the said depending skirt, and a hose supporter secured to and extending from the lower end of the said prolongation of the tension strap, predetermined portions of the said prolongation'and hose supporter lying within the said sleeve in the skirt so as to be maintained in position relatively to the skirt when the wearer of the garment is seated.
3. In an apparel corset and in each corset body half thereof, a skirt depending therefrom, a tension strap secured at one edge rby a line of stitches distant from the front steek-means for securing the opposite end of a tension strap to the lower front portionof the corset body, a hose supporter prolongation depending from the said tension strap, a sleeve formed in the lower front portion of the* said depending skirt,
and a hose supporter secured at one end to the lower end of the prolongation of the tension strap and secured at its opposite end to the said skirt so that predetermined portions. of the said prolongation of the "tension strap and the hose suporter lie within the said sleeve in orderto be maintained in position relatively to the skirt when the wearer of the garment is seated.
, Signed by me this 20th day of May, 1.915.
