Description

PATENTED-APR. 21-, 1908.
P. HOFMEISTER. PLAGKET CLOSURE-FOR SKIRTS.
I APPLIUATION FILED r113. 23. 1904.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PLAGKET-CLOSURE FOR SKIRTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 21, 1908.
Application filed February 23, 1904. Serial No. 194,682.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FLORA I'IOFMEIS'IER, residing at Racine, in the county of Racine and State cl Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Placket-Closures for Skirts, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings, which are a part of this s peciiication.
The main objects of this invention are to relieve the main placket members and their fastenings ol" strain, to prevent the gapping of the placket or vent between such. fastenings, and generally to improve the construction and appearance and increase the utility and convenience of devices of this class.
It consists in certain novel features of constructici'i and in the peculiar arrangement and con'ibinatioi'ls of parts as hereinafter particularly described and pointed. out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing like nuinerals designate the same parts in the several figures.
Figure 1 is a rear view of a skirt embodying the invention, the main placket members being disconnected. and turned back to expose to view the supplementary closure; Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the skirt showing the inside of the supplementary closure; Fig. 8 is a horizontal section of the placket closure on the line 3 3, Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a rear view of a modification of the placket closure; and- Fig. 5 is a detail view of an adjustable flap section or strap to be used in the form of placket closure shown in Fig. 4.
In these drawings an ordinary skirt 6, is represented, having the usual placket members 7, permanently joined together at their lower ends and attached at their upper ends to the waistband 9, which is provided with suitable fastenings, such as hooks and eyes 10. At an intermediate oint or points between the waistband and t e lower end of the placket opening the placket. members are provided as usual, with suitable fastenings 8.
The parts thus far enumerated and the arrangement thereof as shown in the drawing, are common to placket closures now in use. The apping of the placket opening between the Iastenings in such closures occasions great annoyance, and the object of the present invention as above stated, is to prevent such gappin by relievin the main placket members an their fastenlngs of strain. This is accomplished by providing a supplementary closure consisting of flaps 11, which are attached by stitching 12, or otherwise, at their outer edges to the inside of the skirt on opposite sides of and at a distance from the placket opening. At their inner edges, which lap one over the other, they are provided at intervals with suitable fastenings 13, arranged to receive and withstand the strain on the skirt adjacent to the placket and to prevent the same from gapping.
The combined width of the flaps 11 when they are connected by their fastenings, is enough less than the combined width of the main placket members 7 when they are brought together between the rows of stitching 12, to relieve them and their fastenings of the entire lateral strain on the skirt and thereby prevent any gapping of the outer placket opening.
In place of the long continuous flaps 11 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the supplementary closure may consist of a series of narrower flaps of straps 14, as shown in Fig. 4, provided at their inner lapping ends with fastenings 13, and stitched or otherwise attached at their outer ends like the flaps 11, to the inside of the skirt.
Instead of a fixed attachment of the flaps 11 or 14 of the supplementary closure to the skirt, they may be adjustably attached thereto by buckles 15, as shown in Fig. 5, or other adjustable fastenings. By means of this adjustment the supplementary closure may be varied in width to fit the skirt to the wearer from the main placket members and their fastenings.
In practice the flaps of the supplementary closure are first brought together and fastened as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, and the main and fastened, thus completely covering and concealing the supplementary closure.
I claim:
l. A skirt formed in its rear with outside placket members and auxiliary inside placket members both located below and adjacent to the waist line, the outside placket members adapted to fit over the inside placket members and the inside members being narrower than the outside members so asto take the lateral strain at the rear on the skirt and prevent gapping of the outside placket, substantially as described.
2. A skirt formed at the rear with outside placket members and with laterally adjustand to most effectively take the strain of placket members 7 are then brought together able inside placket members, both placket members being located below and adjacent to the waist line, the outside placket members being adapted to fit over the inside placket members and the latter being narrower than the outer placket members so as to take the lateral strain at the rear on the skirt and prevent gapping of the outer placket, substantially as described.
3. In a placket closure for skirts the combination with the main placket members forming parts of a skirt at the rear thereof, permanently joined together at their lower ends and provided with fastenings for detachably connecting them and closing the placket, of a supplementary closure consisting of flaps attached to the inside of the skirt on opposite sides of and at a distance from the opening between said main members and provided with fastenings for detachably connecting them, the combined width of said flaps being enough less than the combined width of the main members to take the strain off from said main members and their fastenings at the rear of the skirt and to prevent gapping between them, substantially as described.
4. In a placket closure for skirts the combination with the main placket members forming parts of a skirt at the rear thereof,
permanently joined together at their lower ends and provided with fastenings for detachably connecting them, of a supplementary closure consisting o'l flaps ad ustably attached to the inside of the skirt on opposite sides of and at a distance from the opening between said main members and provided with fastenings adapted to detachably conmeet them and to take the strain off from the main members and their fastenings at the rear of the skirt and prevent gapping between them, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses. FLORA HOFMEISTER.
