APPLIUATION FILED our N0 MODEL.

PATENT- OFFICE.
WAIST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 762,704, dated June 14, 1904. Application filed October 19, 1903. Serial No- 1'7'7,598. (No model.)
To all whom Ill; may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUISE ROGERS GREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Decatur, in the county of Dekalb and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in VVaists, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in means for fastening shirt-waists or the like garments to an underwaist.
The prime object of the invention is to attach in a specific manner the lower part of a shirt-waist to an underwaist to prevent the former from slipping and to also provide a positive support for the lower garments to insure the latter being comfortably and evenly positioned on the wearer.
The invention further enables the wearer to dispense with the usual draw-string and yet provides a strong and convenient fastening between the upper and lower garments which effectually prevents them from becoming separated-as, for instance, shirt-waists when worn by boys.
With these objects in view I will describe in detail the points of novelty and emphasize the same in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a blouse-waist fastened to an underwaist. Fig. 2 is a detail front view of the lower portion of the outside of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the inner end of the two waists and the means employed for fastening the two together. I
The same numerals refer to like parts in all the figures.
1 represents a blouse-waist of well-known pattern, and 2 an underwaist. The lower ends of the two waists l and 2 are brought together and are placed between the open ends of a strong strip of fabric 3. The strip of fabric is folded on itself straight along its lower edge 4, and adjacent the latter the two folds are reinforced by a row of stitches 5. After the two ends of the waists are placed between the folds of the strip 3 they are fastened together by a row of stitches 6. Adjacent the outside fold and at the top thereof is a reinforcing-band 7 the ends of which are turned in and lap the inner fold of the strip 3. Two rows of stitches 8 and 9 bind the ends of the waists, strip 3, and band 7 together and with the stitches 6 form a strong and durable fastening to readily withstand the strain usually present at this point of the garment. The specific stitching is furthermore utilized to secure the buttons to the strip 3, as I have found that sewingthem direct to the band does not give entire satisfaction. I accomplish this by inserting tabs 10 between the band and the outer fold of the strip 3 and attach them by stitching 11, and then when the band 7 is put in place the stitches 8 and 9 also pass through the tabs, which fastens them securely to the garment.
The ad vantages of my invention should be apparent to those skilled in the art to which it appertains, and as the broad idea of the improvement isiknown in the art and as the improvement as herein set forth is specific it is not deemed necessary to emphasize the many pertinent results which are likely to be obtained.
What I claim as new is- 1. A shirt-waist or other garment, an underwaist, a strip, a reinforcing-band, and stitches securing the lower ends of the two waists to the strip and the reinforcing-band, in combination with tabs located between the strip and the band, and buttons on the tabs, the aforesaid stitches also serving to fasten the tabs in place, substantially as described.
2. The combination with an underwaist, a shirt-waist, astrip of fabric folded upon itself, the lower ends of the underwaist and shirtwaist being inclosed between the upper ends of the folded strip of fabric, stitches fastening the lower ends of the folded strip, a row of stitches passing through the two upper ends of the strip and also through the inclosed lower ends of the underwaist and shirt-waist,
a reinforcing-strip on the outside of the strip In testimony whereof Ihave signed rnyname and ad acent the inclosed ends of the slnrtto this specification 1n the presence of two subwzust and underwaist, stitohlng passing scribing Witnesses.
through the reinforcing-strip, folded strip, LOUISE ROGERS GREEN. shirt-Waist, and unclerWaist, and buttons em Witnesses:
ried by the folded strip, substantially as do- J. HOWELL GREEN, scribed. I J. S. SLIoER.
