' UNITED STATES PATENT O FICE.
WVILLIAM F. MOGEE, OF JACKSON, MICHIGAN.
'IADJUSTABLE SKIRT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,196, dated February 13, 1900., Application filed October 10, 1898. Serial No. 693,099. (No modeL'r To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM F. McGEn, a citizen of the United States, residing at J ackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Skirts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in adjustable skirts wherein provision is made for adjusting them to the size of the waist of the wearer; and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide means for adjusting the waist size of a skirt, especially a yoke-skirt, so that several sizes may be obtained in each skirt, thus avoiding the now-existing necessity of keeping a large stock in store from which to select, which necessity now practically excludes yoke-skirts from the market; second, to provide a yoke-skirt which may be adjusted to changes of the wearers waist size, as by increasing or diminishing the amount of flesh or clothing, and, third, to provide a yoke-skirt with size adjustment which is convenient, best-fitting, and is neat in appearance. These objects I attain by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a rear view of the upper portion of a skirt embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the yoke or band of the same, showing the manner of securing the skirt and flaps. Fig. 3 is arear view of the flaps separate from the skirt.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughprovided with a placket P I I and is fastened to the yoke by gathering in plaits or without into the seam of the yoke around from P to P the ends of the yoke forming a continuation upward of the placket to the top of the yoke. I Extension-flaps D D and D D, Fig. 3, made of the parts E F and E F, Fig. 3, and corresponding to the skirt construction, are detachabl y fastened by hooks II and eyes I or otherwise to the ends of the yoke, as shown, graduating the waist size of the skirt to that of the wearer by the amount of lap of the skirt over the flaps, and in case of securing the flaps outside of the skirt instead of under it, as may be done, then by the amount of overlapping of the flaps. The lower ends of the flaps I usually secure together at K, Fig. 3, and tothe corresponding point K of the skirt asapivot-point of the adjustment. The skirt thus adjusted and in proper position on the wearer is fastened by the buttons G on one flap in the reciprocal buttonholes G in the other, as shown at G G, Fig. 1. The means by which the ends of the skirt-yokes are fastened to the flaps or the means of fastening the placket edges together is not essential.
I do not wish to confine myself to a yokeskirt entirely, as my device may be applied to skirts without yokes.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat-- In a skirt having a placket, the detachable extension-flaps D, D, composed of the parts E, E, and F, F, substantially corresponding in construction with the adjoining parts of the skirt, said flaps provided with serially-arranged fastenings I, I, I which engage the fastenings H, H, H, of the skirt to connect them and form the desired length of yoke, sub stantially as and for the purposes described and set forth.
WILLIAM F. MOGEE.
