Patented Mar. 21, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED W. STERN, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in trousers and has for'its object to provide trousers having'an expansible waist portion and provided with means on said waist portion for limiting the expansion thereof, and consists in the featuresof construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention: Figure -l is a View ,inj' elevation of a pair of trousers constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary top plan view of the same on an enlarged scale.
Atthe present time ready made trousers. arelcut to a certain waist measure and length. In someinstances the purchaser requiring a given length of trousers necessarily requires greater or less waist measure therein as the case may be. The result is that the clothier is obliged either to alter the trousers-by in creasing or decreasing the waist measure thereof, which necessarily-involves expense, or in the event that the difference in the waist measure is so great as to preclude possibility of alteration he is obliged to-supplya larger waist measure and longer trousers and reduce the length. This causes a general breaking up of stock lots so that at the end of a season the merchant may have on hand a "inumber of coats and vests of different sizes together with trousers which do not match and these he is usually obliged to dis pose of at very low figures and at considerable loss.
The object of my invention is to provide trousers which may be ex I anded in the waist line and may, there ore, originally be cut to smaller measure than accepted Standardsso that for example a thirty inch for a waist measure somewhat smaller and also a waist. measure considerably larger. The range of expansion aiforded will cover v practically all variations in waist measures of wearers of trousers of given length.
A further object of the invention is to provide trousers which-will fit sufiiciently snugly around the waist and over the hips to obviate the necessity of wearing suspenders to support the same and which further more are equipped with means for limiting the expansion of said trousers at. the waist. v The object of the invention is furthermore to provide a garment which is very neat in appearance besides being comfortable and well-fitting. i
To accomplish the objects above specified I provide in the waist portion or waist band A of the trousers and in the side seams thereof an incision or opening extending downwardly over the hips. The separated portions B and G of the waist band on either side of the recess thus formed are-joined together by means of a piece D of elastic webbing. The latter is secured by lines of stitching to the-front and rear portions of the trousers as shown at E and F in Figs. 1 and 2. The line of stitching connecting the rear portion of the trousers with said elastic'webbing is made sufiicient-ly far rearwardly of the extreme forward edge to leave a flap G which is adapted to overhang and cover the exposed portion of said webbing D when the waist band of the trousers is shrunk to its normal position.
Trousers which are not supported by suspenders usually require a belt around the waist to support, the same. The belts employed are usually passed through loops disposed around the waist band and generally are made of leather. In order to produce a neat efi'ectand at the same time cater to the convenience of the wearer I have secured to each of-the flaps G one end of straps H and I, respectively, the strap I being provided with a buckle J through which the free end of the strap H is adapted to pass and in which it is adapted to be engaged. Said trousers are provided adjacent the fly with loops K for the passage of the free end portions of said stra s H and I. The said straps are preferab y made of the same material as the trousers and, therefore, har
monize in every respect with the latter and ture and color is employed. Said straps H and I at the same time'enable the wearer to draw the garment as tightly around the waist as he may desire.
By means of my invention the above-mentioned objections to the present construction of trousers is entirely overcome and a neater and better fitting garment is produced.
I claim as my invention:
In a pair of trousers, a Waist portion having interposed in the sides thereof a pair of oppositely disposed resilient gussets, flaps integral with and of the same material as the sides of the waist portion and extending across the outer faces of the gussets and rojecting from the rear toward the front 0 the Waist portion for covering the gussets, and 5 of a waist belt. a
In testimony whereof I have signed my name in'presence of two subscribing witnesses.
