WILLIAM rnnnrmacnr, or NEW YORK, N. v.
ADJUSTABLE coA'r.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 7, 1910. Serial No. 570,703.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, WIILIAM PADERNACIIT,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have in-' vented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Coats, of which the following is a specification.
I This invention relatesto ladies outer gar? ments, particularly ooats.or jackets, which,
are adjustable to various sizes within a certaln limited range.
The invention more particularly contemplates what may be termed a maternity coat,'certain dimensions of which maybe gradually increased from time to time as occasion requires, thereby obviating the necessity for the purchase of an ill-fitting garment, or a number of garments of various sizes, the means for adjusting the'coat to fit the changing figure of the wearer being of such a character that the garment always presents a neat and finished appearance in all conditions of adjustment.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings,-forming apart of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of one side of a coat embodyin my invention In its preferred form; Flg. 2 is a similar view of the garment in its closed condition; Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating my invention as applied toa full length coat; Fig. 4 is a similar view of the same garment in its closed condition; Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing a slightly modified form of the invention; F 6 is a similar view of the same in a close condition; Fig. 7 is a view of anothermodified form of the invention, and Fig. 8 is a fragmentary detail view hereinafter described. v
Referring now to the drawings in detail,
.numeral 11 refers to a ladys coat, which I have shown with'the usual front opening when it is provided with the usual buttons "12 and buttonhole's 13. In addition to this usual front or other opening,.I provide an openingl-i on each side thereof, on a comparatively short garment extending from its lower edge to a point about midwa ofthe sleeve on the -under side thereo as shown in Fig. 1. This opening takes the place of the usual side seam in this location, and the material is cut and finished with such dimensions that provision is made for the overlapping of the edges 15 and 16 of the opening, the rear edge 15 being preferably arranged to overlap the front edge 16. On the inside of the rear edge 15, which is shown thrown back in Fig. 1, I provide a series of hooks 17, suitably spaced apart,
which are adapted to cooperate in the usual "manner with one of a plurality of series of eyelets '18 in the flap 16. I have shown four series of these eyelets in the body portion of the garment, although it will be apparent that-more or less than four of such series may be employed if desired. Where this side opening 14 extends into the sleeve of the garment, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the four series of eyelets 18 merge into first three then two eyelets and finally one eyelet, whereby the size of the coat may be increased to the greatest extent at points where the greatest increase is most necessary, and to a lesser extent at other points, the adjustment thus being of a characterto insure a proper hang and a smooth and finished appearance to the garmentin any condition of adjustment. full length coat, I have found that it is unnecessary to have these side openings extend the full length of the garment. As shown in Fig. 3, this opening 14 may terminate slightly below the waist line, and
when one of a number of a series of eyelets apparent that. the skirt portion 19 of the coat, at the lower end of the. side opening, will be folded into a graceful plait 20, the
body of the garment at, and above the waist line being smooth and close fitting. Similarly, it is not necessary to extend these side openings into the sleeve portions of the garment, as I may terminate these openings at the sleeve, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. From these figures, it will be apparent that when the hooks 17 are brought into engagement of any one of the series of eyelets 18", a small plait 21 will be formed on the under 'side of the sleeve at the seam, which will gracefully merge itself into the smooth porappearance of the garment or the comfort of the wearer. 7
It will be apparent that when the hooks are brought into engagement the se r1es of eyelets nearest thereto, one or posslbly two of the remaining series of eyelets w ll be exposed to view. Of course, narrow plalts 22 may be provided to cover each series of Patented Dec. 5,1911.
In a so-called tion' of the sleeve and not detract from the eyelets, as shown in Fig. 8. I prefer, however, to make these eyelets as small as possible and finish them in the same manner as button holes are finished with thread which is of the same color and shade as the mate,
rial of which the garment is made. In this manner, these eyelets are not noticeable nor can they be seen except upon the closest inspection.
In order to insure a more nearly perfect adjustment and set of the garment, I much prefer to provide the side openings as shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 5. It will be apparent, however, that these openings are not essential, inasmuch as the material may be folded upon itself, as shown in Fig. 7 where an adjustable plait is illustrated which fully embodies the spirit of my invention. I do not-consider that this form of my invention is satisfactory or desirable as the preferred forms shown, but there is no question but what it possesses every feature of adjustability.
It will be understood, of course, that the side of the garment not shown in the drawings is the counterpart of the one illustrated.
With respect to my invention, it will be apparent that I have provided a coat which is, within a certain range, readily adjustable to various sizes and which, when adjusted, presents a neat and finished appearance.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A coat, jacket or the like provided wit the usual fastening means and having an additional opening at each side of the garment, said side openings extending into the under sides of the sleeves and being provided with means for adjustably closing the same,
2. A coat, jacket or the like provided with the usual fastening, means and having an additional opening at each side of the garment, said side openings extending into the under sides of the sleeves and being provided with means for adjustably closing the same, the range of adjustment being greatest through the body of the garment and tapering to a minimum in the sleeve.
3. A coat, jacket or the like provided with the usual fastening means and having an additional opening at each side of the garment, said side openings extending into the under sides of the sleeves, a plurality of rows of eyelets at one edge and extending the full length of each side opening, and a series of fasteners on the other edge adapted to cooperate with any one of said rows of eyelets to close said opening.
l. A coat, jacket or the like provided with the usual fastening means and having an additicnal'opening at each side of the garment, said side openings extending into the under sides of the sleeves, a row of hooks on the inside of one'of the edges of said side opening, a plurality of vertical rows of eyelets in the other edge thereof extending the full length of said opening, said hooks being adapted to cooperate with any one of said rows of eyelets to close said opening in various positions of adjustment.
5. A coat, jacket or the like provided with the usual fastening means and having at each side thereof a narrow fold or plait in the body portion which extends into the under side of the sleeve, a plurality of vertical rows of fastening devices in front of said plait and extending throughout the length thereof, and cooperating fastening devices on the under side of said 'plait, whereby said plait may be drawn over said body portion and secured to any one of said rows of fastening devices on said body portion to vary the size of the garment.
In testimony of the foregoing, I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM PADERNACHT. Witnesses:
AARON GINSBURG, P. FRANK SONNEK.
