Be it known that I, WALTER E. WARNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garments, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to an improvement in wearing-apparel, particularly for men; and

my object is to provide a garment which will combine the advantages of both a shirt and a coat or blouse without the necessity of having the double thickness of clothing over the upper part of the body which is necessary when both a shirt and coat are worn.

My invention will be defined in the claims.

In the drawings, showing the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 shows a front elevation of my garment, and Fig. 2 is a detail section.

In hot weather it is often desirable to dispense with a coat; but in such case the upper end of the trousers and the suspenders are exposed, and if a coat is worn without a'shirt the advantages of the ftails of the shirt, which are normally tucked inside the trousers, are lost. Furthermore, in a blouse, such as is practically a loose shirt pulled out of the trousers sufficiently to fall in a double fold down over the top of the trousers, there is a triple thickness of cloth at the waist-line, where for coolness additional thickness should be avoided, and the falling double fold is unsightly. In my garment I avoid these objections and provide a garment which has the outward appearance of an outer garmentsuch as a coat, shirt, or jacketand yet has tails like a shirt without the triple thickness at the waist-line, and yet conceals the top of the trousers and entirely hides the suspenders.

In the drawings, 1 is the main outer garment, which may be cut to the appearance of a coat, jacket, or blouse, &c., and provided with sleeves 2. This is adapted to clothe the body of the wearer from the neck or shoulders down below the waist-line and terminates at the lower end in a skirt portion 3.

4 is a supplementary portion which is adapted to substantially surround the body, preferably like the tails of the ordinary shirt, and is attached to the inside of the main portion some distance above the bottom of the skirt. It extends below the skirt and may be tucked into the trousers like the tails of a. shirt, the upper end of the trousers being located between the skirt and the portion Land concealed from view by the skirt. 3 hangs free-that is, it is not doubled on itself as ashirt would be if merely pulled out of the trousers and allowed to hang down in a double fold, but gives the appearance of a continuation of the upper portion of the garmerit.

5 is alaterally-elastic portion-such,-for example, as an elastic bandwhich may be attached to the inside of the skirt 3 to contract the circumference of the same and to hold it close to the body when turned up above the waist-line to allow the buttoning of the susponders 6 to the trousers.

7 7 are loops inside the body portion,through which the suspenders may pass, and 8 8 are openings, preferably formed between the body portion and the part 4, from the inside of the body portion to the space between the skirt portion and the part 4, through which the suspender-ends 9 9 may pass, so they can be buttoned to the trousers and yet concealed.

Iam aware that many variations from the construction shown in -the drawings may be made without departing from my invention as claimed, and I therefore do not limit myself to the particular embodiment herein described and illustrated.

What I claim is 1. In an article of wearing-apparel in combination, a main outer garment having sleeves and a body portion adapted to clothe the figure from the shoulders to below the waist-line and terminating in a free-hanging skirt at the lower end,and a supplementary portion adapted to surround the body and attached to the inside of said main portion a short distance above the bottom of the skirt and extending below the skirt, said skirt portion being provided with a laterally-elastic portion to contract the circumference of said skirt.

2. In an article of wearing-apparel in combination, a main outer garment having sleeves and a body portion adapted to clothe the figure from the shoulders to below the waist-line and terminating in a free-hanging skirt at the lower end,and a supplementary portion adapted to surround the body and attached to the This skirt inside of said main portion a short distance above the bottom of the skirt and extending below the skirt, said article of wearing-apparel being provided with openings from the inside of said body portion tothe space between the skirt portion and said supplementary portion, said openings being formed between the edge of said supplementary portion and said skirt portion by detached portions of the edge of said supplementary portion to allow the passage of Suspender-ends therethrough.

3. In an article of wearing-apparel in combination, a main outer garment having sleeves and a body portion adapted to clothe the figure from the shoulders to below the waist-line and terminating in a free-hanging skirt at the 'lowerend, said outer garment having an opening from the neck down to substantially the waist-line and said skirt portion extending continuously around the body and terminating in a horizontal lower edge and a supplementary portion adapted to surround the body and attached to the inside of said main portion a short distance above the bottom of the skirt and extending below the skirt, said article of wearing-apparel being provided with openings from the inside of said body portion to the space between the skirt portion and said supplementary portion to allow the passage of Suspender-ends therethrough, said openings being formed by parts of said supplementary portion which are detached from the inside of said body portion, said body portion being provided with inside suspenderretaining loops.
