Description

M. G. ROSENTHAL.
'UNION SUIT.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. 19, 1914.
1,139,999. I Patented May 18, 1915.
vTo all whom it may concern:
unrrnn PATENT OFFICE. nesnis,e.. nosaurnet, or neuron, c1116.
Be it known that I, Mortars G. ROSEN- TEAL, citizen of the United States, residing at Mentor, in the county of Lake and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Union Suits, ofwhich the following is a specification. v [This invention relates to garments, and especially to union undergarments or suits, and has'for its objects to provide a union suit with means for adjusting the neck opening with respect to the size, and also to provide a new front or chest construction.
In'ordinary union suits no meansare provided for varying the neck size, and hence :for example a garment willoften be uncomfortable on a person having a large neck, or' binding at the neck will be caused, particularly after a garment shrinks. My lnvention avoids these inconveniences, by permitting the neck opening .to be made larger or smaller as circumstances may require. v
An embodiment ofthe invention is'illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in
1 Fig'n ef l is a front eleaation of-the garmen t'. 2'is a similar view with the under flap exposed, the front of the garment "the advantages of a doublebreasted eifect.
being provided with two flaps, and having Referring specifically to the drawings, 6
- indicates the body of the garment, which may be made in the usual or any desired form. The neck opening 7 isproduced'by slitting the tube diagonally across the breast flap or part 9. A triangular inner or under fiap 10 is sewed along the line 8 to the edge of the inner or under part, and this fla 10 gives the double breasted result or e set, the flap being sewed along the seam 8, but
' being otherwise free or detached, sothat it maybe spread or opened out to form an opening of suflicient size to enable the garment to be put on. A neck strip 11 extends around the neck opening and along the edge of the outer flap or part 9, and also along the upper inner edge of the inner flap 10. At the front or point of the neck opening the stripis provided with a plurality of button holes 12 any one of which will receivea button 13 sewed to the inner part of the garment, and lower down, at the right side of the garment, the part of the strip 11 attached to the part 9 is provided with a button hole 14 to receive a button 15,, at-
Specification of Letters mm.

tached tothe-under part of the front. At
the left side I of the garment, the breast thereof is provided with a plurality of button-holes 16, one of which is located somewhat above the other, and any one of which will receive a button 17 sewed to the point of the under triangular flap 10.
By the means described, the neck opening may be made larger or smaller as desired. To make a small neck opening, the button '13 is engaged in the-u'pper button hole 12. To make the neck opening larger'the button 13 is engaged in the lower button hole 12. At the same time, if desired, the button 17 may be changed from the upper to the lower -button hole 16, although the'button 17 may also be changed for the purpose of changing the size of the chest to a snug or a loose fit, depending on the chest measure of the wearer.
The wales of the body of the garment extend'up and down as usual. Those-of the under flap 10 extend crosswise so as to give a desirable elasticity in a vertical line to said flap. When the parts are buttoned as of cloth over the chest, and furthermore, i the parts should become unbuttoned there will be no exposure of the chest because the outer part 9is held across the chest at all times by reason of the connection at its lower end to the body of the garment. In this respect it is superior to those garments having a neck opening which will gap when unbuttoned,
such as those having a strai ht opening down the front, or a plurality o flaps whlch do not overlap normally, and which will consequently come open as soon as they are unbuttoned. This is of particular benefit in childrens arments, from which the buttons frequentfy, come off. The wales of the strip 11' run lengthwise .of the strip, and
inasmuch as the strip asses around the neck opening it wi'lPnorma y lie in close contact -with the bodyiaii d will not tend to gap open.
What I'claiin'as new 1s:
1. A garment provided with a neck opening and having mner and outerflaps below said openin the outer flap having a free edge extending at an inclination from said openin downwardly and laterally toward the walst line, the other edges of said flap being fixed to the body of the garment, and the inner flap comprising a triangular p ece sewed to the body along one edge and being free along its other edges.
2. A garment provided with a neck opening, and a front opening extending at an inclination downwardly and laterally from said neck opening toward the waistline and one side of the body, and an inner triangular flap sewed at one edge to the edge at said opening and free at its other edges underlying the breast of the garment, the point of the triangular flap extending toward the waist line on the opposite side of the body.
'3. A garment having inner and outer- .breast flaps crossed diagonally below the neck opening, the inner flap having a point extending adjacent to the waist line, an upper fastening between said flaps at the point of the neck opening, and .a lower fastening between the point of the inner flap and the side of the body of the garment near the waist line, each of said fastenings being adjustable position to Vary the size of the a neck opening.
4. A garment having inner and outer breast flaps crossed diagonally below the neck opening, the inner flap comprising an inserted triangular piece sewed along one meenee lateral edge to the body of the garment and having the other lateral and the bottom edges free, and sets of adjustable fastening devices between the inner flap and the body of the garment, one set being located below the point of the neck was; and the other set bein free inner point 0 said flap.
-5. A garment having inner and enter breast parts, the outer part being formed by the body ofthe garment, said body having a'cut extending downwardly and. laterally from the neck opening toward the waist line at one side, and the inner part being formed by a triangular flap sewed along one side edge to the edge of said out, and along its other edges, and a fasteningdeviee between the free 'point of said flap and body of the garment at the other side.
