Description

J. WERBER Oct. 24, 1950 SHIRT Filed June 8, 1949 INVENTOR Jack Wez'ber Mm Mm Patented Oct. 24, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention is an improvement in outer garments, particularly shirts to be usually worn in conjunction with trousers, and with or without coats.
The presence of suspenders to support the trousers in dress is not in harmony with the general dress effect desired for social occasions. Yet many persons prefer suspenders to a belt and the chief object of my invention is to provide a shirt adapted to permit the use of suspenders with a shirt, but concealing them from view over virtually their entire extent.
The nature and advantages of my improvement are set forth in the ensuing specification, taken with the drawings; and the novel features are pointed out in the appended claims. But the description is explanatory only and variations in details may be adopted Without deviation from the general design in which the invention resides.
On the drawings:
Figure l is a front view of a shirt according to my invention;
Figure 2 is a rear view thereof;
Figure 3 shows how the shirt allows suspenders to be worn with the shirt over the suspenders; and
Figure 4 is a detail of the garment.
The shirt has a body I with sleeves 2 that may be long or short, and an opening for the neck with collar 3. It is divided along the front and fastened by means of buttons or the like 4. It also has one or more breast pockets 5.
In the lower part of the shirt are slits 6, extending upward from the bottom edges. At the upper or inner ends the slits are widened, and adjacent the wide ends are fasteners at both edges of the slits. One fastener 1 has the usual small knob or head, and the other fastener 8 has a socket into which the head is forced to secure the fasteners together. When the fasteners are thus engaged the wide upper ends of the slits present openings 9.
The slits 6 are hemmed or braided along the full extent of the edges as indicated at l0. When the shirt is worn, the lower part II is of course inside the waist of the trousers I2, and the suspenders I3 are beneath the shirt. The ends of the suspenders, which have means such as clips M, for attachment to the waist band of the trousers; are passed through the slits 6 and lie in the widened inner ends thereof. When the fasteners 1 and 8 are engaged, the extremities of the suspenders having the clips I4 project through the openings 9 formed by the wide inner ends of the slits 6 and the fasteners T and 8, and the clips are secured to the waist band of the trousers, while the bands or straps of the suspenders pass over the wearers shoulders. The suspenders thus give full support but are completely covered by the shirt and rendered virtually invisible. At the same time a belt can be added to encircle the top of the trousers, to improve the general appearance of the wearer.
Having described my invention, what I believe to be new is:
1. A shirt having slits extending upward from the lower end, said slits being widened at their inner extremities and fasteners attached to the edges of the slits adjacent said extremities to secure the edges together to form openings at said extremities.
2. A shirt having slits extending upward from the lower end, said slits being widened at their inner extremities and hemmed along the edges over their entire extent, and snap fastener members attached to the opposite edges of said slits adjacent the widened inner extremities to secure the edges together and form openings at said extremities.
JACK WERBER.
