Application January 31, 1942, Serial No. 429,059
(c. z-zs) 2 Claims.
This invention relates to garments and the like and more particularly to a garment having a detachable sleeve.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a garment embodying a detachable sleeve which, when attached'affords comfort and which can be easily and'quickly detached without material effect upon the appearance of thel garment.
Another object is to provide a sleeve construction, the detachable feature of which is not immediately apparent from physical inspection when the garment is worn.
A further object is to construct a detachable sleeve which will provide increased resiliency and consequent freedom of movement for the arm.
Still a further object is to provide a detachable sleeve construction Which will provide ventilation at the .arm-pit region and thus prevent the damage that usually results from underarm perspiration.
Still a further object is to provide a garment embodying a shoulder construction which forms an integral part of the design but which cooperates with the detachable sleeve to produce the appearance of a permanent construction.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent from the following specification taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention.
Figure 1 is a fragmentary front elevation of a dress embodying the invention. f Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 with the sleeve detached. i
Figure 3 is a fragmentary enlarged View showing the sleeve attached.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 showing the sleeve detached.
Referring in greater detail to the drawing:
The dress generally indicated at A embodies a cape or capulet IO which extends over the shoulder and over a portion of the sleeve l l.
The dress is provided with an armhole IZ which terminates slightly short of the acromion portion of the shoulder of the wearer. Thev edge of the armhole opening may be provided with loops [3 adjacent the armpit portion.` The loops l3 are adapted to engage the buttons or other fastening means ll on the sleeve l l.
The loops l3 are preferably elongated in order to provide resiliency and consequent freedom of movement for the arm. It has an additional purpose of providing ventilation by spacing the sleeve from the armpit when the arm is raised.
An additionalloop IS may be provided at the top of the armhole opening to engage a corresponding button or other fastening means [6 on the sleeve.
A reinforcement shieldor arm shield ll may be provided.
The sleeve I l is adapted to fit over the acromion portion of the shoulder of the wearer and around the armpit. Thus the sleeve ll will hang naturally from the shoulder. However, in order to provide a snug fit and a secure grip about the shoulder, an elastic band or cord l8 may be inserted about the upper edges of the sleeve. The band [8, however, terminates short of the armpit portion. In this manner the underside of the sleeve will be free of contact with the armpit.
If desired, the loop I5 and the button IS may be eliminated, in View of the snug fit of the sleeve over the shoulder.
When it is desired to detach the sleeve from the garment, it is simply unfastened from the attachments, as above described. The detachment of the sleeve will not change the style of the garment or materially affect the appearance i of the garment as shown in Figure 2 of the drawing, by virtue of the provision of the cape or capulet l3, which conceals entirely the juncture between the detachable sleeve and the armhole portion of the dress.
The elongated loops l3 provide a greatly increasedV freedom of movement for the arm as well as ventilation. Furthermore, the garment will be free of contact with the armpit portion of the wearer and thus damage resulting from underarm perspiration will be eliminated.
It will be understood that this description is given by way of example and not by way of limitation. It will be obvious that the invention may lend itself to a variety of expressions within the scope of the appended claims. In terms of broad inclusion, the invention may be characterized as a dress having a detachable sleeve which is detachably connected to the armhole portion and entirely covered by a capulet or similar device which forms an integral part of the design of the dress and which conceals the detachable feature of the sleeve.
Having fully 'described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. In a garmenthaving an armhole portion, a detachable sleeve, the upper marginal edges of which are adapted to fit over the acromion portion of the wearer, the underside of said sleeeve extending to a point below the armpit of the wearer, elastic fastening means for attaching said sleeve to said armhole portion, said elastic fastening means being elongated whereby saidv sleeve will be spaced from said armhole portion, and a capulet constituting an integral part of the design Vof the garment extending over the shoulder of the garment and over a portion of said sleeve and entirely covering said armhole portion.
2. In a garment having an armhole portion, a detachable sleeve, the upper marginal edges of which are adapted to fit over the acromion portion of the wearer, the undersideof said sleeve extending to a point below the armpit Vportion of the wearer, elastic contracting means along the upper and side portions of the marginal edges of the sleeve for gripping the shoulder of the wearer, and elastic fastening means for attaching the armpit portion of said sleeve to said armhole portion, said fastening means being substantially elongated, whereby said sleeve will be spa-ced from said armhole portion, and a capulet constituting an integral part of the design of the garment extending over the shoulder of the garment and over a portion of said sleeve and entirely covering said armhole portion.
