Description

W. MENDL July 18, 1950 GARMENT Filed March 6, 1948 INVENTOR William Manil- BY F M J. ATTORNEY Patented July 18, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim. 1
My invention is an improved garment, and more particularly a coat for outside wear and designed so that the upper part thereof gives increased protection to the shoulders or head, as the owner may elect.
An important object of the invention is to provide a coat of novel form and finish, with a cape attached thereto above the shoulders and adapted to be worn as a cape draping the shoulders and hanging down over the arms, but adapted to be used also as a hood for the head and having means for securing the cape in position to serve as a hood whenever the owner so desires.
A further object is to provide a coat of this character that is of comparatively simple make, but capable of being completed in various styles, all of which embody the characteristics above mentioned, and with the securing means for the cape, when turned up to cover the head as a hood, easy to manage and quickl releasable to enable the hood to be removed and the cape to be restored to its normal relation with respect to the body of the garment.
The nature and advantages of the invention are set forth in the ensuing description and the distinguishing features are defined in the claim. But this. disclosure is by way of example only and changes in details may be adopted without departure from the essential plan which contains the invention.
On the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front view of a coat according to this invention, with a cape attached and shown in the usual position; and
Figure 2 is a similar view illustrating the cape raised to envelope the head and retained in position to serve as a hood.
The body I of the coat is of full length, and buttons or the like are utilized to close it in front. At the top is a cape 2, attached by buttons 3 and holes 4 under the collar '5. The cape may be permanently secured in place, if desired, and it is long enough to envelop the sleeves '6.
When draped over the shoulders the cape 2 hangs down nearly to the waist, as indicated in Figure 1. For service as a hood the cape is turned up over the head, as shown in Figure 2. An ordinary cape, however, is too large for a hood, and my invention includes means for taking up the cape and disposing of the front ends or corners so as to shorten the cape and make it fit the head more snugly. For this purpose, loops 1 are attached to the front of the coat at both sides, a little below the shoulders 8 and near the collar 5. Other fastening means can of course be employed.
When the cape is turned up and forward to cover the head, the two extremities 9 are crossed under the wearer's chin and each is drawn under one of the loops 1. The frictional engagement of the extremities 9 with the loops 1 prevents the release of the extremities 9 till they are pulled out. The hood can thus be worn properly and kept tight or slack as the owner may wish. It can be freed once and dropped to serve again as a cape whenever the owner feels so inclined. When the cape .2 is down as in Figure 1, it covers and conceals the loops 1.
My improvement is thus very simple and quite useful and can be incorporated in almost any style of coat to which a cape is appended.
Having described my invention, what I believe to be new is:
A coat having a collar and a cape attached adjacent the collar thereof, the cape being long enough to cover the wearers shoulders and reach approximately to the waist of the coat, the cape having separated edges at the front of the coat, said edges intersecting the lower edge of the cape, and a pair of loops secured to the front of the coat, one at each side, near the top but below the shoulders, and under the cape, said loops being close to the neck so that when the cape is turned up over the head the parts of the cape adjacent said edges can be folded and crossed under the chin and passed through the loops and the cape thus retained in position to serve as a hood for the head.
