Description
Dec. 18, 1956 M. e. SACCOCCIO GARMENT WITH DETACHABLE SLEEVES Filed Oct. 25, 1955 INVENTOR. MZ/Q G- .sqccocc/o 9- mm Mk ATToRA/E United States Patent GARMENT WITH DETACHABLE SLEEVES Mario Giovanni Saccoccio, Malverne, N. Y., assignor to Princess Fair Blouse, Inc., New York, N. Y., a corporation of Maryland Application October 25, 1955, Serial No. 542,729
1 Claim. (Cl. 2-106) This invention relates to a garment with detachable sleeves and has particular application to blouses worn by girls, women and children.
While detachable sleeve constructions in garments are not new per se, and an entire sub-class in the United States Patent Ofiice shows such constructions, none of the prior constructions have been entirely satisfactory. These constructions have either been bulky, costly, unsightly, or unsatisfactory for the purpose intended.
It is an object of this invention to provide a garment with a detachable sleeve construction wherein the viewer of the garment will not be aware of the fact that the sleeves are capable of being detached when such sleeves are in attached condition.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a garment with a detachable sleeve construction wherein the viewer of the garment will not be aware of the fact that the sleeves are capable of being attached when such sleeves are in detached condition.
It is a further object of this invention to produce a garment with a detachable sleeve construction wherein the fastening of the attaching members which hold the sleeves to the body of the garment will not produce unsightly bulges upon the shoulder portions of the garment.
It is a further object of this invention to produce a garment with a detachable sleeve construction which will be simple to clean and press.
It is a further object of this invention to produce a garment with a detachable sleeve construction that will be inexpensive to manufacture.
The invention may be briefly described as comprising a garment having a body portion provided with sleeve openings therein. A holding member is secured within the forward portion of each of the sleeve openings and is fastened to the interior of the body portion only by its leading longitudinal lateral sector, being free from the garment body at all other points. Fastening means are provided upon the holding member, detachable sleeves are adapted to be secured to the body portion adjacent the sleeve openings, and additional fastening means complementary to the first-named fastening means are disposed upon the upper portion of each of the sleeve members upon the outer surface thereof. The upper edge portions of the sleeve openings slope upwardly and the lower edge portions of the sleeve openings extend at an angle with respect to the upper portions and downwardly with respect thereto.
In the preferred modification of this invention as adapted for large-scale manufacture the fastening means used are spaced snap fastener elements. A bound portion is provided which defines the leading edge of each of the sleeve openings. The leading longitudinal lateral sector of the holding member is disposed within the bound portion and fastened thereto. An additional holding member is also provided which is secured to the upper portion of the outer surface of each of the detachable sleeves, and additional spaced snap fastener elements complementary to the snap fastener elements upon the first-named holding member are disposed upon the additional holding member.
The invention will be further described by reference to the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this specification.
Fig. 1 is a front view of the garment of this invention in position upon the body of the wearer with the sleeves thereof in attached condition.
Fig. 2 is a detail view of the garment shown in Fig. l of the area 2 of Fig. l with certain parts thereof broken away to show the internal construction.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the portion of the garment shown in Fig. 2 taken along lines 33 of Fig. 2 wherein the complementary fastening means are separated so that the construction is more clearly shown.
Fig. 4 is a detail view of the connection between the garment body and the detachable sleeve with some of the fastening means disengaged so as to show the construction.
Referring now to the specific form of the invention as shown in the accompanying drawings for a detailed description thereof the garment 10 is formed with a body portion 11 which is provided with two sleeve openings 12. A holding member 13, which is a strip of cloth tape, is adapted to lie within the forward portion 14 of each opening 12. A bound portion 15, which defines the leading edge of each sleeve opening 12, is also provided and is fastened to body portion 11 by stitching 16. The leading longitudinal lateral sector 17 of holding member 13 is disposed within bound portion 15 and is fastened within said portion by stitching 16.
The trailing longitudinal lateral sector 19 of holding member 13 is also bound and the bound portion is secured to the body of holding member 13 by additional stitching 20. Fastening means 21, which are a series of spaced snap fastener elements, are secured to holding member 13.
It is pointed out that the construction shown illustrates the fact that holding member 13 is held to body portion 11 only by sector 17 and the remainder of the holding member is free from attachment to the body portion. Thus bulges at the shoulder line are eliminated.
Additional snap fastener elements 29 complementary to snap fastener elements 21 are also secured to holding members 23.
The operation of the foregoing invention will now be explained.
With the garment removed from the body of the wearer and the sleeve members 22 in detached position the wearer aligns fasteners 21 with fasteners 29 and snaps the complementary fasteners in place. The garment can then be worn as a sleeved garment.
If the wearer wishes to remove the sleeves she again removes the garment from her body and separates fasteners 21 from fasteners 29 thus removing the sleeves. In washing the garment the sleeves are also preferably removed and the garment and sleeves Washed separately.
Patented Dec. 18, 1956 arrears It is pointed out. that since the holding members 13,
which carry the fastening means 21' secured to the body" of the garment are held in'place only by their leading longitudinal lateral sectors, the stitching holdingthe members 13 in place is very close 'to the leadingledges of arrnopenings'12... Thus, even though holding members lfi'rmust be of considerable width to carry fasteners 21v the point of attachment of this member to the body of the garment is narrow. Thus a bulgeis not produced a'ttheshoulder when the garment is worn. On the other hand' if holding member 13 were fastened to the body of the garment at both its leading and trailing longitudinal lateral sector, a considerable bulge would be produced which would-not-only be unsightly but also would let the viewer of the garment know that a detachable sleeve construction was being worn. Also, in order to avoid p ulling of the holdingmembersaway from one another sleeve members 22 are of sufiicient circumferential size to permitthe arm of the wearer to .fitloosely therein.
The specific construction of the foregoing invention as set forth in the specification herein is for illustrative purposes andlfor purposes of example only. Variouschanges and modifications may be. made Within the spirit and scope of this invention 7 I claim: 7
g A garment having detachable sleeves with the adjacent. shoulder portions thereto presenting a smooth appearance; comprising, a body portion provided with sleeve openings therein, the upper edge portions of said sleeve openings sloping upwardly and the lower edge portions of said sleeve openings extending at an angle with respect 7 to the u-pper edge portions thereof and downwardly, 'a bound'portion defining the leading edge of each of said sleeve openings, a circumferential planar holding member secured within the forward portion of the interior surface'of each of said sleeve openings about the entire circumference thereof andhaving only its leading longitudinal edge disposed ithin said bound portion and" fastened-th'ereto, 'Wli'h the trailing longitudinal edge thereof being entirely free of said sleeveopening; spaced fastening means' upon said holding mernber, detachablesleeve members adapted to terminate above the elbow of the wearer securedto, said body portion at said sleeve'openings, wherein said sleeveinembers are of sufficient circumferential size to. permit the armzo'f the wearer to be loosely disposed therein, an additional holding member secured to the upper portion of the outer surface of 7 each of said sleeve members, and additional spaced fas tening means complementary to said first-named; fastening means upon s-aid additionallholding niemberj References Cited the file of this patent UNITED, STATES PATENTS
