HOWELL A. BAILEY INVENTOR.
ATTORNEY United States Patent SKIRT WITH REMOVABLE INSERT Howell A. Bailey, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application April 22, 1954, Serial No. 424,975
1 Claim. (Cl. 2-211) This invention relates to a skirt with a removable insert, preferably of contrasting color with the rest of the skirt.
This application is a continuation-in-part of my copending application, Serial Number 337,537, filed February 18, 1953, now abandoned.
It is an object of this invention to construct a skirt with a removable insert portion which may be interchangeable with similar inserts, which are preferably of contrasting colors, so that a wide variety of styles may be produced.
It is a further object of this invention to provide suitable means for keeping the skirt secured to the body of the wearer while the various inserts are interchanged so that a change in style can be produced without the necessity of removing the skirt from the wearers body.
It is a further object of this invention to produce one garment which may be worn on successive days by the interchanging of inserts without the viewer of the modified garments being aware that the same garment is being worn.
It is a further object of this invention to produce a skirt that will be inexpensive and durable in construction.
Briefly stated the invention comprises a body member forming the body of the skirt provided with an opening therein. A removable insert, preferably of a contrasting color to that of the body member, is disposed within the opening within the body member and removably fastened thereto. A securing member is fastened to the body member at one side of the recess and extends across the opening to the other side thereof where it is fastened to the body member by removable fastening means.
Preferably, but not essentially, the insert is greater in width than the opening and the fastening means securing the insert to the opening are disposed along the insert at points spaced from the sides thereof s0 that the fastening means may be concealed. It is also possible to form the insert with a second waistband portion at the upper side thereof. When such second waistband portion is used it bears its own fastening means.
The invention will be further described by reference to the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this specification.
Fig. 1 is a front viewof one form of skirt made in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a front view similar to that of Fig. 1 but showing the construction of the skirt in greater detail and also showing the securing member that is used to hold the skirt to the body of the wearer while the removable insert is being changed.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the removable insert.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the skirt taken along line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the skirt taken along line 5-5 of Fig. 1 with the securing member omitted for clarity of illustration.
Referring now to the form of the invention as shown in the drawings skirt 11, which comprises this invention,
Patented May 29, 1956 is formed with body member 12 provided with opening 15, which is in the front portion thereof. Opening 15 may extend throughout the thickness of the garment and thus form an opening or it may only extend partially through the thickness of the skirt.
Fastening means 19, which are preferably a series of slide fastener elements, are secured to the side portions of opening 15 and terminate at the level of first waist ban p i n 13.- Fa ener 21 ar disposed upon firs waistband 13 and are preferably spaced from the sides of opening 15.
Additional fastening means 22 are disposed upon second waistband portion 17, preferably spaced from the sides thereof, and are adapted to mesh with fastening means 21. These fastening means are preferably snap fastener elements. Second waistband member 17 is preferably pointed as shown in the drawings at 23 so that a skirt of good looking appearance may be produced. Fastening means 19 and 20 are spaced from the lower edge portion of first waistband 13. Thus, in the operation of the device, proper adjustment of this garment may be made.
Securing member 25 is secured to the skirt body at 27 and extends across recess 15. Securing member 25 bears fastening means 26 which are adapted to be secured to complementary fastening means 28 secured to body portion 14 at the other side of recess 15. Fastening means 26 and 28 are preferably snap fastener elements.
On the basis of the foregoing description of the invention its operation may be easily explained.
A series of insert portions, preferably of differing colors and styles, are provided and the wearer selects the one desired. The wearer then puts on the garment and secures fastening means 26 and 28 to one another thereby securing the skirt to her body. She then inserts the bottom portions of fastening means 19 into sliders 24 and causes sliders 24 to slide to the top of the row. Fastening means 21 and 22 are then connected and the skirt is worn. At this point fastening means 26 and 28 may be left engaged or may be detached for greater freedom of movement.
When it is desired to change the insert fasteners 26 and 28 are engaged, fasteners 21 and 22 are disengaged and sliders 24 are slid to the bottom of the row of slide fastener elements. Another insert may then be selected and engaged as previously explained.
Since the skirt remains on the body of the wearer while inserts are being changed the device is valuable where a number of costume changes must be made without proper dressing facilities being available.
The foregoing specific embodiments of the invention as set forth in the foregoing specification are for illustrative purposes and for purposes of example only. Various changes and modifications may obviously be made within the spirit and scope of the invention and would occur to those skilled in this art.
I claim:
A skirt comprising a first waistband portion and a body portion having aligned spaced vertical edges defining an opening in the front thereof, a removable insert panel extending from the level of the first waistband 3 to the bottom of the skirt, said first waistband portion extending around the back of the skirt from one edge to the other; a second waistband portion complementary to said first waistband portion having outwardly extending tabs, said second waistband portion being secured to the upper portion of said insert panel; complementary fastening means upon said tabs and saidfirst Waistband portion, additional spaced complementary slide fastener elements upon the edges of thebody portion and the opposite sides of said insert panel spaced inwardly from the edges thereof, said slide fastener elements being spaced from-the lower portion of said first waistband portion and' extending to the bottom of said skirt; an elastic securing member permanentlyfastened to said first waistband portion at one vertical edge thereof 15 5 removing the skirt from the body of the wearer.
