This invention relates generally to articles of wearing apparel, and more particularly to a garment such as a coat or the like having a removable collar or fur neck piece.

The object of this invention is to provide a garment of the character described which is readily convertible from a fur trimmed article of apparel to a simple untrimmed garment, and vice versa.

A further object of the invention is to provide a garment of the character described which will be readily convertible into any one of a variety of different styled articles of apparel, by the mere addition thereto of a different ornamental neck piece.

A further object of the invention is to provide in a garment of the character described a novel and improved construction whereby an ornamental neck piece may be readily attached thereto or detached therefrom.

A further object of the invention is to provide a construction of the character described, whereby the fastening means utilized to attach "the ornamental neck piece isconcealed when the ornamental neck piece is so attached, or is detached.

A still further object of the inventionl is to provide a construction of the character described in 'which the ornamental neck piece will, when attached to the garment, have the appearance of being permanently attached thereto.

A further object of the invention is to vprovide in a garment of the characteridescribed fastening means for the ornamental neck piece which is simple in operation 'and easily accessible. A still further object ofthe invention isv to provide a garment of the character described, including a neck band provided-thereon and having a concealed portion of a slidable'fastening device associated therewith, whereby `an ornamental neck piece may be temporarily secured to said neck band.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a garment of the character described, including a neck band provided thereon and having a concealed portionv of a slidable fastening device associated therewith, whereby an ornamental neck piece may be temporarily secured to said neck band, said neck band including a flap member adapted to overlie and conceal said portion of said slidable closure.

A further object of the invention is to provide ina garment of the character described, a construction whereby an ornamentalneck piece may be adapted for temporary attachment thereto, said construction including a novel downwardly extending flap afiixed'to the neck band of the garment and adapted to conceal the attaching means, whether said piece is attached to the garment yor not.

Other features of the invention lie in the specific constructional details thereof which lend to a' neat, well made, serviceable and practical article of wearing apparel.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of the structure may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

For the purpose of facilitating an understanding of my invention, I have illustrated in the accompanying drawing a preferred embodiment thereof, from an inspection of which, when considered in connection with the following description, my invention, its mode of construction, assembly and operation, and many of its advantages should be readily understood and appreciated.

Referring to the drawing in which the same characters of reference are employed to indicate corresponding or similar parts throughout the several iigures of the drawing:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the upper portion of a garment constructed in accordance with my invention and having an ornamental neck piece attached thereto.

Fig. 2 is a similar view, but having the neck piece detached from the garment.

Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the garment showing the neck piece in the process of being detached therefrom.

Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken through the neck band of the garment, generally along the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.

Referring now to the constructional details of the garment, the reference character Il) designates generally the body of an article of wearing apparel, such as, for example, a dress, lcoat or jacket, with which my invention is adapted to be associated. Obviously the invention is not limited to articles of ladies wearing apparel, but might even be adapted to mens and childrens wearing apparel. In the garment illustrated, there are provided front portions or panels Il and l2 which are adapted to meet or overlap and be held in such position by the button i3 and the buttonhole I4. At the upper portion ci the garment is provided a neck band, generally designated l 5, which has the appearance, as shown, of being made up of two somewhat convex portions, an upper portion I6 and a lower portion Il.

When the garment l0 is provided with a neck piececomprising'a fur collar I8, vit has thefappearance illustrated in Fig. 1, with the neck piece I8 encircling the neck band I5 and overlying the shoulders ofthe garment I5. As is usual, the fur neck piece I8 is provided with cooperating hook I9 and eye 25 in the front thereof to cause same to be held over the front panels II and I2 of the garment.

While a fur neck piece I8 has been illustrated, it should be understood that any type of neck piece may be used. This mayiinclude a collar having ornamentations other than fur thereon, constructed of the samematerial which forms the body of the garment I0, etc. By means of my new invention, even a hood may be attached to the garment.

As shown in Fig. 4, the upper portion IS of the neck band I is permanently fixed in place by means of the row of stitching 2|. However, the lower portion Il is in the nature of a flap extending downwardly from the line of stitching 2|. In the embodiment shown, the portion I6 is formed by folding the piece of material which forms the body of the neck band I5 to form the inside face I5 of the upper edge of the neck band, and continuing same downwardly, folding the bottom edge upon itself and stitching same at 2| to form the portions I6 and I'I. As shown in Fig. 3, the-lower edge 22 of the flap I1 is free about the circumference of the neck band I5,

except Ifor a short portion 23 which is attached by the line of stitching 24 at the front of the coat immediately over the buttonhole I4. A similar line of stitching 25 is provided for fastening the edge 26 adjacent the button I3.

Immediately below the flap Il, and concealed thereby, I have provided a portion 21 of a slidable fastener, generally designated 28, such as commonly known as a zipper. Obviously any other applicable slidable fastener means may be used. The portion 2 is held in place upon the portion 29 of the neck band I5 and is attached to the inner face I5' by means of lines of stitching 30, as shown. It will be seen from Fig. 2 that when the fur collar I8 is not attached to the garment, the flap I1 overlies the half 21 of the slidable fastener 28 and conceals same from view. In this condition the garment I8 presents the appearance of a neat sport style jacket, coat or dress.

The fur neck piece IIlis providedwith the members 5I, preferably formed of the same material from which the coat body I0 is made, attached to same by the lines of stitching 32. Obviously, although not shown, the collar backing may include suitable stiffening members, felting, linings, etc., same being omitted for purposes of clarity. At the outer edge of the member 3|, I have attached the second half portion 33 of the slidable fastener 28, afiixed thereto by the row of stitching 3ft. It is preferred that the half portion 33 be attached in such a manner that only a small portion of the teeth of the slidable fastener 28 extends therefrom.

From the above description, it will be seen that the collar I8 may be attached to the coat l0 in a simple manner. By means of the slidable member 34 the half portions 21 and 33 of the slidable fastener 28 are caused to cooperate about the circumference of the neck band I5, thereby fastening the collar I8 upon the coat I0 and giving same the appearance illustrated in Fig. 1. During the attaching process, the flap I1 is lifted and'immediately after the collar has been attached said iiap I1 may be bent downwardto be bent to expose the slidable fastener 28 when the neck piece I8 is attached or to expose the half portion 21 when the neck piece I8 has been removed.

Inasmuch as the fur piece I8 is attached to the coat along its upper edge, same will hang in a natural manner and not give the appearance of being temporarily attached to the coat. If desired, a plurality of various styles or types of neck pieces may be sold with the single garment I, thereby making same' available for a variety of neck piece styles.

It will be seen from the above description that the construction of my invention is simple and easily adaptable to almost any style of garment. In view of this, it is practical to adapt all manner of wearing apparel to the expedient taught by my invention.

It is believed that my invention, its Inode of construction and assembly, and many of its advantages should be readily understood from the foregoing without further description, and it should also be manifest that while a preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described for illustrative purposes, the structural details are nevertheless capable of wide variation within the purview of my invention as defined in the appended claims.

What I claim and desire to secure by lLetters Patent of the United States is:

1. In a garment of the character described, a body portion, a neck band provided on the upper edge of said body portion and including a cloth member doubled upon itself and forming inner and outer faces of said neck band, the outer face being substantially divided in two by a circumferentialV row of stitching, forming upper and lower portions, the lower portion being doubled upon itself and thereby forming a free edge whereby same comprises a downwardly depending flap, a portion of a slidable fastening device attached to said garment beneath said flap and concealed thereby and a `neck piece hav ing the second portion of said slidable fastening device attached thereto and adapted for cooperation with said rst portion whereby said neck piece may be secured to said garment about the neck band thereof.

2'. In a garment of the character described, a body portion, a neck band provided on the upper edge of the body portion and'including a cloth member formed with upper and lower hgalvesl separated by a line of stitching said halves having the same outward appearance, but said lower portion being a downwardly extending free-edged iiap, a portion of a slidable fastening device attached to said neckband immediately beneath said iiap and adapted to be concealed thereby, and a neck piece being provided with the cooperating portion of the slidable fastening device and adapted vto be detachably'secured to said neck band thereby, said neck band having means normally tending to hold said flap in a position concealing said fastening device, comprising a line of stitching holding a portion of the free edge of said flap to said neck band.
