Description

I May 11, 1943. D. ZIMMERMAN LAPEL Filed Dec. 4, 1941 INVENTOR.
M .wwm i W 0/ attachments for coats.
Patented May 11, 1943 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE f. 1 2,318,829 1 LAPEL pavid Zimmerman, Cleveland. Ohio Application December 4, 1941, Serial rim-421,601
2 Claims.
My invention is an improvement in wearing apparel and relates more particularly to lapel It is one of the objeotsof my invention to a lapel of the above named character which is simple of construc'tion'and inexpensive to manufacture.
A further object consists in a full line lapel attachment for coats which comprises an outer lapel facing and" an inner lining having the exact configuration of the facing throughout its extent, the facing and lining being secured together along the entire periphery of the lapel.
Another object is to provide a flap in the lining whereby to receive the coat lapel between the facing and the lining and fastening or anchoring means along the open edge of the flap to retain the attachment in proper adjustment or position.
Another object oi the invention is to provide a lapel attachment which comprises a pair of lapels, each-having a portion which normally lies under the coat lapel, and a neck bland connecting the underlying portions of each lapel unit and adapted in use to lie under the collar of the coat.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will become more apparent as the following description of an embodiment thereof progresses, reference being made to the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters are employed :to designate like parts throughout the same.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a front elevation showing an embodiment of my invention applied in use; g.-
Figure 2 is a front elevation of one lapel unit before application to a coat;
Figure 3 is a rear elevation of a lapel unit showing the flap rolled back and the fastening means on the flap for properly positioning and anchoring the lapel on the coat lapel;
Figure 4 is a transverse section taken on line 4-4 of Figure 3; and
Figure 5 is a transverse section taken on line 5--5 of Figure 3.
I am aware of Letters Patent No. 1548564. granted to Jake Stern on August 4, 1925, for Lapels,.but my invention possesses several novel and the lining may be cut from the same pattern til advantages not present in the said Letters Patent which will be pointed out hereinafter. H
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, in which I have illustrated one embodiment of my invention, a mans coat .is
shown in Figure l with the improved lapels attached.
Each lapel of vthe'pair comprises an outer face I of silk or other suitable cloth for the purpose intended, and a lining 2. Both the lapel face and are secured together along their outer edges by stitching as at 3, the edges of cloth along the seam being disposed inwardly between the outer face and the lining to present a well finished appearance. A button hole 4 is formed in one of the lapels along the outer edge and is positioned to underlie the corresponding button hole of the coat and to receive the button 5 on the opposite side of the coat front. The button hole 4 lies below the fold line B of the lapel so that when the lapel is in proper position on the coat, the button hole will be located directly behind the coat button hole as shown in Figure 1.
In order that the lapels may receive the respective coat lapels, the lining is cut away to provide an opening 1 and a flap portion 8. Referring more particularly to Figure 3 which shows the lining side of the lapel in elevation, the opening is bound-ed by an edge 9 of the lining running from a point Ill downwardly to a point above the button hole 4 and thence transversely to the seam 3 along the front edge of the lapel. At the upper end of the opening 1 the edge ll of the lining lies along a line defining the gore line of the coat collar and extends from the point III to the base of the lapel tip 12 as at IS. The flap 8 extends from l3 downwardly to the transverse edge of the opening in the lining. It will be noted that the flap 8 opens freely at its base portion only as indicated in Figure 3 and i provided with a plurality of snap fasteners l4 along its free inner edge for separable engagement with complementary fasteners carried along the underside of the coat lapel.
The lining is also provided with similar fasteners l5 along the front and rear edges for separable engagement with complementary fasteners along adjacent portions of the inner face of the coat.
Each of the lapels of a pair may be secured to a collar strap I! which lies under the coat collar when the lapels are in place on the coat. The ends of the strap are secured to the inner face of the lapels and substantially in a line with the gore line of the coat collar as indicated by the edge H of the opening I.
From the above description, it will readily be seen that by my invention I have made several improvements over the device disclosed in Letters Patent No. 1,548,564.
I have provided a lapel attachment which will present a neater appearance in use. This is due to several improved features, namely, the cut of flap adjacent the coat lapel receiving envelope and the provision of securing means on the flap for separable engagement with the underside of the coat lapel; the cut of the upper portion of the lapel attachment so that its upper edge will be along the gore line of the coat; the distribution of flat fastening devices along the edges of the lining and the inner portion of the coat and the provision of a button hole just below the fold line of the lapel and directly behind the corresponding button hole of the coat; and finally the neck hand strap H which affords additional positioning support for the lapels about the neck and shoulders of the wearer.
These improvements contribute to the tidy appearance of the attachment and so position the same in place that the lapel attachments may be rolled over the coat lapels without giving any appearance of increased thickness of the lapels or otherwise disturbing the lines of the coat.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a lapel attachment for coats, a facing,
a lining member underlying the facing and secured thereto along its entire periphery, said lining having an opening therein and extending longitudinally thereof for receiving a coat lapel, that portion of the lining between said opening and the outer edge of the lapel being relieved at one end only transversely from the opening to the outer edge of the lapel and constituting a flap, and quick releasable fastening means on the underside of said flap for securing the flap to the underside of the coat lapel.
2. The combination with a mans coat having a collar and lapels of a lapel attachment comprising a pair of matched convertible lapels and means for securing the same to the coat so that the lapels respectively overlie the lapels of the coat, and a neck band secured to each of the convertible lapels and adapted to lie under the collar portion of the coat, each of said matched lapels comprising a facing member and a lining member superimposed thereon and secured together throughout their peripheries, said lapels having a side coincident with the gore line of the coat, said lining member having an opening for receiving the lapel of the coat between the lining and the facing, a flap formed in the lining along one side of the opening, said flap having but two free edges of unequal length, said facing and lining members having a fold line running from the gore line of the coat to the shorter of said two free edges, and fastening means on the underside of said flap and along the periphery of the lapel for removably securing the same to the coat. m
DAVID ZIMMERMAN.
