Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 11, 1914.
Application filed. October 24, 1812. $eria1No. 727,556. 1
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD C. RETHORN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Buffalo, county of Erie, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trousers, of which the following a full, clear, and exact description.
The principal object of my invention has been to provide trousers, the waistband of which may be adjusted in size so that it will atany time meet the requirements of either the dealer or the wearer and thereby obviate the necessity of. alterations in the garment and at the same time preserve the proper fit and neat appearance.
Another object has been to provide trousers which will be cut in such a manner that they will fit neatly tothe wearer without overlapping 01' wrinkling at the waist line, no matter what the adjustment of the waistband may be, and thus obviate the use of suspenders and the side or back buckle straps.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, inwhich like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views of which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper portion of a pair of trousers and shows the embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same and shows one portion of the belt removed and one of the side flaps folded back. Fig. 3 is a fragmental side view of the waist portion of my improved trousers and shows the manner cutting the placket in the same. I
In the drawings, 5 represents the waist portion of the trousers and 6 the waistband thereof. The material forming the waist portion of the trousers is cut at each side along the lines 7, 8 and 9, as shown in Fig.
3, thus forming front and rear portions 11 andlO, respectively. When the trousers are being made up after the'material has been cut in the manner just described, the portion 10 is brought over and overlapped on the portion 11 and sewed down on to the same along the line 8 and the line 7 between the point 12 and the lower end 12 of the cut, as indicated in .Fig. 2. From the point 12 to the waist line the front and rear portions 11 and 10 are left loose, thus forming front and rear flaps 13 and 14, respectively.
Secured to the rear edge of the front flap 1.3 and on its outer surface is a hook 15, which is engageable with one of a plurality of eyes'16 equally spaced and secured to the inner surface of the rear flap 14. An eye 17 is also secured to the outer edge of the inner surface of the flap 14 and is engageable with one of a plurality of eyes 18' equally spaced and secured to the outer surface of the front flap 13.
So as to add to the strength and neatness of my garment, I provide a half belt which comprises two parts 19 and 20. The inner end of each of the parts 19 and 20'is secured between the materials forming the rear flaps 1+1 and preferably near the edges thereof. These belt parts are preferably passed through tunnels 21 provided at the front of the waistband of the trousers. The
belt part 20 is provided with an adjustable buckle 22, so that the buckle may always be kept at the center of the waistband no matter what the adjustment of the same may be.
- It will be seen from the accompanying drawings, that in order to adjust the waistband of my trousers, it is only necessary to unhook the hooks 15 and 17 from the eyes 16 and 18 and then move the rear flaps 14 to the position where the waistband will neatly fit the wearer, whereupon the said hooks may then be secured to the eyes which are nearest the adjusted position. When so adjusted the belt parts 19 and 20 are drawn up or let out as required and the buckle 22 trousers will always have a neat and finished appearance and wrinkling of the same is thus prevented.
Obviously, if desired, single fastening means may be provided on each set of flaps instead of the double fastening means shown, as well as other modifications of the details herein shown and described, withoutdeparting from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the appended claim and I do not wish to be limited to the exact embodiment herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A pair of trousers comprising, a waist portion, a front and rear flap at each side of the rear center of said waist portion, each pair of said flaps being formed from a single plece of material, a triangular piece of ma-' terial being removed at a point below each pair of flaps and below the waist line and the two edges of the cut portion beingsecured together, the circumference of the trousers at the upper part of the triangular out being comparatively less than the circumference at the lower end of the triangular cut and comparatively less than the circumference of the material at the upper EDWARD C. RETHORN.
