Patented Aug. 122, 1958 This invention relates to trousers and is particularly applicable to the type in which the rear portion of the waistband is formed as a tunnel from which the ends of adjustable supporting straps project.

These types of trousers have the required neat appearance but generally the straps do not adequately support e trousers and often cause the Waistband to crease at the back.

it is generally the object of this invention to provide trousers with the tunnel type of Waistband but having a heater appearance, allowing for better adjustment of Lie effective length of the waist of the trousers and providing a better support for the trousers.

According to this invention there is provided trousers having a waistband with the rear portion formed as a tunnel open at each end, a pair of belts accommodated in the tunnel with one end of each belt secured to the waistband and the opposite ends free and brought round through the tunnel to project from the ends thereof at each side of the waistband.

According to a further feature of the invention both sides of the front portions of the waistband are also formed as tunnels through each of which one belt extends and is secured at the ends to the front of the waistband.

According to a still further feature of the invention the free end of each belt is threaded through the loop in the tunnel at the back of the waistband and doubled back to project from the corresponding end of said tunnel.

Fig. 1 shows a pair of belts for attachment to trousers in accordance with this invention.

Fig. 2 shows the said belts incorporated in a pair of trousers with the waistband of the latter opened up to expose the belts.

Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken along line 33 of Figure 2.

In the preferred form of this invention as shown in r Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings there is provided a pair of belts 1, 2, each belt being threaded through a loop 3 and doubled back on itself.

The belts 1, 2 are accommodated in the waistband 4 of a pair of trousers 5 for which purpose the full length of the waistband 4, including the tongue or waistband extension if this is used, is formed as a tunnel in which the belts 1, 2 may move relative to the waistband 4 as shown in Fig. 2. The ends 6, 7 of the belts 1, 2 are secured to the ends 8, 9 of the front portions of the waistband 4 and also to a hook 10 and bar or eye 11, respectively.

At the sides, the waistband has slits 12, through which the free ends 13, 14 of the belts 1, 2 emerge for attachment to the outer fabric 15 of the waistband 4.

The loop 3 is preferably of rectangular shape and made of metal or other suitable rigid material and is not attached to the waistband 4. The belts 1, 2 may be made of any suitable material which may if desired be elastic, but preferably they are made of strong and relatively stiff material such as webbing and are provided with elastic inserts is.

13, 14 may be adjustably attached to the outer fabric 15 of the waistband 4 by any conventional means such as the buttons 17. The hook may be sewn to the end 7 of the belt 2 but is preferably riveted thereto to reduce any possibility of it becoming detached. The eye 11 is sewn or clinched to the belt 1 through the outer fabric 15 of the waistband 4 as shown in Fig. 2 and in the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.

In use it will be seen that the belts 1, 2 provide a support around the full circumference of the waistband 4, in a manner comparable to a normal belt, while only the ends of the belts 1, 2 project outwardly from the waistband 4, so that the neat appearance of the tunnel type 'of trousers is maintained. Where the belts 1, 2 are made of relatively stilt" material they will also act to reduce the tendency of the waist portion of the trousers 5 to crease. Fine adjustments of the belts 1, 2 can be made at either side since the combined effective length of the both belts 1, 2 will only be reduced by half the amount of the adjustment. Furthermore, since the Waistband i is movable relative to the full length of the belts I, 2 any tendency for the Waistband 4 to pucker at any point is reduced even though adjustment is effected at only one side, since any creasing of the waistband can be evened out around the full length of the belts 1, 2.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

In trousers or like garments having overlapping fly members, a waistband formed of oppositely facing inner and outer lengths of fabric secured to each other along their corresponding opposite edges, the lower edges of said lengths being secured to the upper edges of the trousers, said waistband having two overlapping ends at the front thereof, one of which extends beyond one of said fly members, a pair of supporting belts accommodated within said waistband between said lengths of fabric, one end of each of said belts being secured to one of each of said waistband ends, said belts passing in opposite directions from said waistband ends around and within said waistband then reversely folded and directed forwardly toward the front of the garment, a loop connecting the folds of said belts together at the rear of said waistband, said loop being unsecured to the fabric of said waistband, the other end of each of said belts emerging from within said waistband to the outside thereof through slits in said outer length of fabric, one at each side of said waistband, means for securing said other ends of said belts on the outer surface of said outer length at different positions thereon, whereby said waistband can be adjusted to fit snugly about the Waist of the wearer and any puckering resulting therefrom is distributable throughout substantially the entire length of said waistband, a hook attached to one of said waistband ends and engageable with an eye attached to the other of said waistband ends.
