WAISTBAND ADJUSTER.
(Applicatidn filed Aug. 26, 1901.;
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTERS. EVANS, OF NORTH ADAMS, MASSACHUSETTS.
WAlSTBAND-ADJUSTE'R.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 693,249, dated February 11, 1902.
Application filed August 26, 1901. Serial No. 73,306. (No model.)
. Adams, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Waistband-Adjusters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to waistband-adjusters.
The object of the invention is to provide a neat and easy adjustment of a garment to any form of waist, and is particularly adapted for summer trousers when no suspenders are worn. I accomplish this object by inserting at the top of each side of the garment an extra piece in such a manner that the fore part and under side of the trousers will lap over the same to take up the-looseness and fastening the said fore part and under side of the trousers together by means of straps formed by the continuation ofthe waistband.
In the accompanying drawings, in which I have illustrated the application of my invention to a pair of trousers, Figure 1 is a side view of a pair of trousers, the straps being buckled. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the straps being unbuckled and removed from the guideloops; and Fig. 3 is a view looking down upon the top of the waistband.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a leg of a pair of trousers consisting of the fore part 2 and the under side 3, united by the side seam 4. 7 Instead of making the under side entire or in one piece, asis thepresentpracrice, I remove a portion and insert a separate piece or flap 5, which when the trousers are provided with hip-pockets is preferably made to extend'from the side seam 4: at the top of the trousers to a point a little to the rear of and'above the rear line of the hip-pocket and extend from the top of the waist downwardly to a point below the top of the outer flapof the hip-pocket and forms the under side there of. The part 6 of the under side 3 laps over the extra piece or flap 5 and forms a placketopening 7. I also provide an opening 8 the width of the waistband in the fore part of the trousers for a purpose hereinafter described.
The flap 5 is provided with guide-loops 9 to receive the adjusting-straps 11 and 12. The strap 11 is formed by the extension of the front portion 13 of the Waistband, While the strap 12 is the continuation of the rear portion 14 of the waistband. To the end of the strap 12 is secureda buckle or other fastening device 15, by means of which the front and rear portions of the trousers may be brought together to adjust the same, as will be readily understood. To prevent the end of the flap 5 from sagging, I provide it with a hook 16 to engage the top of the waistband. This supports the part 5 and at the same time allows the waistband to slide freely when the same is being adjusted.
It will readily be seen that in order to adjust the trousers to the waist of the wearer all that is necessary is to bring the straps 11 and 12 .on each side of the trousers together and secure them by the buckles l5. Owing to the slots or openings 7.and S the under side 3 and the fore part will lap over the flap 5 and prevent bagging, as the flap 5 will always lie smoothly against the hips of the wearer.
While I have shown and described my invention as applied to a pair of trousers, it Will be understood that I- do not limit myself to this particular construction, for with various changes in'the for'm, proportions, and details my invention maybe applied to ladies skirts and undergarments without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V A pair of trousers provided with a hippocket and having a cut-away portion in its under side at the hips'thereof, a flap secured to the outer side seam of the trousers to 00- cupy and fill the space formed by the cutaway portion and extending downwardly to p form a partial lining for the hip-pocket, a I In testimony whereof I have hereunto set waistband divided at the hip portions of the my hand in presence of two subscribing wittrousers, means for adjnstably connecting messes.
the ends of the waistband, and a 11001: ear- \VALTER S. EVANS. ried by the flap and adapted to engage the 1 \Vitnesses:
waistband to prevent the sagging of the flap, CARLTON T. PHELPS,
substantially in the manner described. CORNELIUS A. PARKER.
