UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIQE.
JACOB N. FAUST AND CLYDE A. I AUST, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
emmin.
Application filed January 2a, 1922. Serial No. 532,358.
To all whoin it may concern.
Be it known that we, JACOB N. FAUST and CLYDE A. FAUs'r, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Girdles, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to girdles and more especially to girdles made from elastic webbing and designed to conform to the sha e of the body of the wearer so as to hod firmly the abdomen and hips while permitting relative freedom of movement.
Difficulty has been experienced with girdles as previously constructed because of their inability to maintain the proper position upon the body and further because of the tendency of the upper and lower edges thereof to become loose because of constant strain, producing an unsightly and uncomfortable condition.
The object of the present invention is 'to produce a girdle which overcomes the difficulties above referred to and embodying further advantagm which will be apparent as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevational view of a girdle embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through one edge of the 'rdle, the view being taken substantially in the plane of line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
The girdle may be made of any suitable 0r preferred material but is preferably made from longitudinally elastic webbing loosely woven in a well-known manner. Herein it is formed from a plurality of relatively narrow strips 7 of webbing connected at their adjacent longitudinal edges by stitching 8. End pieces 9 are secured at the opposite ends of the strips 7 and carry cooperating fastening devices 10 and 10. These end pieces are preferably formed of relatively heavy cloth of suitable character and uality and may be provided with stays 11. tays 12 may also be provided in the body or back of the girdle and spaced a short distance apart.
At the upper edge of the girdle We provide a waist band 13 enclosed within a welt 14. This welt is formed in the present instance by turning inwardly a portion ofthe same in position as at 15 and 15 The welt is therefore made of elastic material; but the band 13 is preferably made of non elastic material. The stays 12 terminate at the lower edge of the welt 14, and above the stays reinforcing strips 16 are secured to the welt upon opposite sides thereof. At the opposite ends of the welt we preferably provide reinforcing pieces 16 in which are formed slots 16 through which the ends of the band may pass. I
The band 13 is of a length substantially equalto the normal length of the upper edge ofthe girdle, and its opposite ends after emerging from the slots 16 are secured near t e opposite ends of the girdle by means permitting of the longitudinal adjustment of the band at least from one end.
Herein both ends are secured to the girdle as. by means of buckles 17 of ordinary construction secured to the end pieces 9 and having rongs adapted to engage in the band to hold it against movement with respect to the buckle. By having buckles at both ends, the adjustment of the band is facilitated, but it will be apparent that only one end need be adjustable.
By reason of the provision of this waist band, the effective length of the upper edge of the girdle may be varied at will by the wearer. Consequently the girdle is rendered capable of adjustment to suit the comfort or requirements of the wearer. When the upper edge of the band is relatively loose, the tendency of the girdle is to slip or shift from its proper position. Obviously such movement may be prevented by properly adjusting the band to cause the girdle to fit more snugly around the waist. Moreover, the tendency of prior girdles to fold or roll outwardly after they have been in use for a time, is effectively prevented by this band. Thus it will be observed that the girdle which we have produced lends not only comfort to the wearer but neatness to her appearance.
In addition to the waist band 13, a band 13 may be provided at the lower edge of the girdle. This band may, for convenience, be termed the hip band. and its construction and arrangement with reference to the girdle is substantially similar to that of the waist band 13. Thus it is enclosed within a welt 1 1 formed by inturning a portion. of
the lowermost strip 7 and stitching the same as at and 15. Buckles 17- are secured to each of the end pieces 9 for adjustably .fastening the opposite ends of the band to the girdle.
, It will be apparent that by the use of the hip band the lower edge of the girdle may be drawn snugly about the body of the wearer, thus preventing the girdl from presenting ah unsightly appearance by pro ecting away from the body. Moreover, this band serves especially in the case of large and fleshy wearers, to increase the abdominal supporting function of'the girdle.
At convenient points around the lower, edge of the girdle, hose-supporters 18 of the usual. construction are attached.
It will be apparent that we have produced a girdle embodying many advantages over the girdles as heretofore constructed, but it will be understood that the use of the two bands may be either separate or in combina tion as may be desired. It will also be ap parent that various changes in construction and arrangement may be made by thdsc skilled in the art without departing from' the spirit and scope of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
We claim as our invention:
1. A girdle comprising, in combination, aband or body of substantial width made from longitudinall elastic webbing and having at its opposite ends cooperating fastening devices, and means enclosed by one of its longitudinal edges for varying the effective length thereof.
2. A girdle comprising a band of substantial width made from elastic webbing and having a waist band enclosed by its upper edge adjustable to vary the effective length of the girdle at such edge.
3. An elastic girdle having a welt at its upper edge, and a non-elastic waist band enclosed by said welt adapted to be secured at its opposite ends near the opposite ends of the girdle and adjustable to vary the effective length of the girdle at its upper edge. 7
4. A girdle having welts at its upper and lower edges and bands enclosed within said welts' and slidable longitudinally of the girdle, the opposite ends of each of said bands being secured to the girdle and at least one end being adjustable to vary the effective length of the girdle.
5. A girdle comprising a longitudinally elastic body portion having welt at one longitudinal edge, a non-elastic band enclosed by said welt and slidable relative thereto, and means for adjustably securing one end of the band thereto while the other end of the band is anchored to the opposite end of the body portion.
In testimony whereof we havehercunto affixed our signatures.
JACOB N. FAUST. CLYDE A. FAUST.
