This invention relates 'to new and useful improvements and structural re'nements' in garter belts, and the principal object of the invention is to facilitate proper and efficient support of stockings by well balanced, flexible distribution of sustaining force on the waist and hip portions of the body of the wearer, this being so achieved that the Wearers body is not subjected to undue distortion, constriction or pressure.
Of course, garter belts have been designed in the past, which generaly assumed the form of a waist encircling band provided with a plurality of vertical, depending hose supporting members, but it has been found that the direct downward pull exerted by the hose supporting members causes the waist encircling band to exert unequal pressure on diierent portions of the wearers waist, thus causing considerable discomfort and inconvenience, particularly when the wearer subjects her body to movement.
The instant invention eliminates these disad` vantages by providing a garter belt which is extremely iiexible in use and which may be worn with comfort without impairing body movements.
Some of the advantages reside in its simplicity of construction, in its pleasing appearance and in its 'adaptability to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects and features in View, and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a front perspective view of the invention in use;
Figure 2 is a rear perspective view thereof; and,
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the invention per se.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specication and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a garter belt which is designated generally by the reference character IIJ and which may be worn either over or under the customary panties I2 for sustaining a pair of stockings I4.
The garter belt I8 embodies in its construction a pair of bands I6, each having crossed portions 26 adjacent the ends thereof permanently secured together so as to provide a closed loop 28 and a pair of free ends portions 28 which extend beyond the crossed portions 26 outside the loop.
`The loops 20' of the bands IB are adapted to engage oppositel sides of the users` waist, one loop on each side, and the bands forming these loops extend obliquely across the front and back to the hip at the relatively opposite side of the users body so that the free end portions 28 are disposed adjacent the respective legs ofthe user. The loops 20 cross each other at front and rear points 22, 24, respectively, Where these loops are permanently secured. The points 22, 24 are spaced downwardly from the Waistline and separate each loop 28 into an upper waist engaging portion I8 and a lower hip engaging portion 38 disposed at the relatively opposite sides of the garter belt.
The free end portions 28 of the bands are provided at the lower ends thereof with conventional hose supporters 32 for attachment to the Welt of the stockings I4.
A pair of longitudinally curved triangular panels 34, which may or may not be of elastic material, are disposed at the opposite sides of the garter belt, each panel having an upper edge 36 which is co-extensive with and secured to the Waist engaging portion I8 of the adjacent loop 20 and a pair of downwardly convergent edges 38 of each panel 34 are co-extensive with and secured to hip engaging portion 30 of the other loop 2l.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that when the garter belt is placed in use and the hose supporters 32 are attached to the stockings I4, downward pull exerted by each stocking will be transmitted obliquely to the waist at the relatively opposite side of the wearers body, in which manner a considerable amount of flexibility is achieved inasmuch as the pull on the waist portion of the garter belt is in a lateral rather than in a direct downward direction.
If the panels 34 are made from elastic material, they will expand to properly sustain the garter belt on the body regardless of size of the wearer.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be clearly understood from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention. what is claimed as new is:
A garter belt comprising a pair of bands each having crossed portions adjacent the ends thereof permanently secured together to provide a closed loop and a pair of free end portions extending beyond the crossed portions outside the loop, the loops of said bands being adapted to engage opposite sides of a users waist, one loop on each side, and said bands forming said loops adapted to extend from said sides obliquely across the front and back to the hip at the relatively opposite side of the users body whereby said free end portions of the two bands may be disposed adjacent the respective legs 'of the user, hose supporters provided at the extremities of said free end portions, said loops crossing each other at front and rear points spaced downwardly from the Waistline and being permanently secured together at their front and rear points of crossing, said points of crossing separating each loop into an upper waist engaging portion and a lower hip engaging portion disposed at the relatively opposite sides of the garter belt, and a pair of longitudinally curved triangular panels disposed at the opposite sides of the garter belt, each panel having an upper edge coextensive with and secured to the waist engaging portion of the adjacent loop and downwardly convergent edges coextensve with and secured to the hip engaging portion'of the other loop.
