Application June 11, 1947, Serial No. 753,871
This invention is an improvement in garment supporters, and more particularly a supporter for hosiery of the style worn mostly by women.
An object of the invention is to provide a supporter of this type which comprises bands or straps adapted to be looped over the shoulders, crossed at convenient points, and suitably attached to the stockings preferably at the front and back of the legs and just above the knees. The bands are a'djustably connected, so that they can be disposed in the most effective and comfortable position.
The nature and advantages of the invention are fully set forth in the ensuing description and the novel features are dened in the appended claims. The drawings show a preferred embodiment of the improvement; and while the structure and design are explained at length, I do not wish to be limited t the exact form illustrated herein. Numerous changes in detail may be adopted without in any way departing from the general arrangement which characterizes the invention, or omitting any of the essential parts.
On the drawings,
Figure 1 is a View showing the complete supporter in position upon the person of the wearer;
Figure 2 presents a detail view of the supporter, and Figures 3 and 4 are separate modifications thereof.
Fig. 5 illustrates a modification of the supporter.
The supporter includes a pair of long bands or straps I, with fastening devices 2 at both ends. The supporter is worn by letting it hang down from the shoulders; each of the straps passing along both the front and the back, and crossing at relatively high points of the body. The strap resting on the right shoulder thus holds up the stocking on the left leg by means of fastening elements at the extremities of the strap. The other strap resting on the left shoulder is likewise attached at its lower ends to the stocking on the right leg.
It is desirable for the two straps to cross each other between the breasts and above the abdomen in front; and at a corresponding point in back. The straps thus do not press or rub against the lower parts of the trunk of the body; and the supporter can therefore be used with the maximum comfort and ease by expectant mothers. The forward and rear parts of each strap also cross at the Wearers sides and extend in opposite directions around the hips to the points on the stockings at which the ends of the straps are secured. The straps or bands are preferably of flexible 2 Claims. (Cl. 2-305) 2 material and can stretch or slide freely as the wearer bends, walks or otherwise moves body or limbs, without feeling tight or irking the wearer in the slightest degree.
The invention also comprises a connector element 3 at the points where the straps cross in front and back. This connector can be a loop of tape or cloth through which the front and rear sections of the straps pass. This element can also be of metal, plastic or cloth or other material; and it can-have the form presented in Figure 2 with straight sides or be as in Figure 3 with reentrant sides 3a to t the crossed bands more closely. It can also have the form of Figure 4 which shows a plate 4 with slots 5 at top and bottom. These slots have openings 6 at the middle in the upper and lower edges of the plate, s0 that the straps can be slipped in edgewise. Once in, they are presented atwise to the inlet opening 6 and will not slip out. These elements allow the straps to adjust themselves as the wearer walks, bends or makes other movements, to the full extent necessary.
The supporter is thus of simple and practical construction, can be put on at once, secured to the hose, worn with the greatest comfort, and taken on readily and quickly either by detaching the fasteners 2 from the hose or, if the wearer first removes the outer garments, by merely slipping the bands outward and downward from the shoulders and removing the bands and hose together. It is therefore admirably adapted to serve all the purposes of the invention.
In Figure 5 another way of wearing the supporter is set forth. Each band or strap l, instead of being led from the shoulder on one side to the hip on the opposite side, is draped over the shoulder and allowed to hang down to the hip on the same side where the two lower parts are crossed, as in Figure 1; and the fasteners at the extremities are attached to the hose or stocking at the top in the same manner as Figure 1 presents. The two bands however are connected just below the shoulders at both front and back through a loop of cloth 3a or any other material. This type of supporter serves the purpose equally well as the one above-described.
Having described my invention, what I believe t0 be new is:
1. A supporter comprising a pair of bands which are adapted to rest on the wearers shoulders, lone on one shoulder and the other on the opposite shoulder, said bands being connected to each other at relatively high points at the front and back of the wearer, the parts beyond said said points on the edges of both of the said bands.
