SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 793,635., dated July 4, 1905,
Application filed January 11, 1905. Serial No. 240,605.
T0 a/ZZ whom, it Tit/rp cm1/067%:
Be it known that l, CASPER BLooMBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to garment-supporters, and is particularly designed for use in place of the ordinary Suspenders for supporting the trousers. It is also well adapted for use in the summer season when the coat and vest are not Worn and it is desired to wear the device underneath the shirt, so that it is notl visible.
The invention is set forth in the accompanying sheet oi' drawings, whereon- Figure 1 shows a garment-supporter or suspendel' embodying my invention, the front portion on the right-hand side being turned back to show its inner or garment-engaging side, while the opposite portion `shows its outer side at the front; and Fig. 2 is a detail view of one end portion of the same.
The device is intended to be attached at each side of the trousers or other garment supported thereby and 'in the present instance has one attaching means only at each side. These attaching means may be conveniently connected with the outer of the front pair of buttons on each side of the trousers. ln such devices to properly and comfortably support the gar ment the line of direction oi' the support on each side should be vertical from the points of support of the garment in order that there shall be no rlateral strain on the garment around the body, which would have the et'- t'ect of causing the garment to bind tightly around the front and to be lax in the rear, or else the garment would bind tightly at the rear and tend to sag at the front portion. In order to obtain these desired results and at the same time to make the device adjustable to compensate for ditferent-sized garments, as well as for differently-built persons, the present invention is constructed with the straps or members passing in several directions from the garment-engaging means and which members are separately and independengaging means. Y
In the present instance the suspender comprises two straps 4 and 5, which intersect at the back and are there connected, either permanently or adjustably, to a back piece or support 6. Each end of each strap is adjustably attached to end pieces 7 and 8, respectively. Each ot' the end pieces comprises two parts, a straight strip of webbing 9 and a piece of webbing 10, suitably secured together in an angular position, as indicated in F ig. 2. Each ot' the straps comprises afront portion 11 and 12, respectively, that are adjustably attached tothe end portions and pass over the shoulders at the portions 4 and 5, thence cross where secured to the back piece 6, and then have their rear extremities 13 and 14 adjustably attached to the portions 10 ot' the end pieces, respectively. In the present construction each part 11 and 12 of the end pieces passes through an eye or chape l5, through which is looped the 'front part of each strap, the extremity of the latter being secured to a suitable adjusting-clamp 17, whereby each front portion is adjusted. Each part l0 of the end pieces carries a similar eye or chape 16, through which is passed the end of the rear straps 13 and 14, each extremity then being secured to an adjusting-clamp 17.
Each of the end pieces 7 and 8 is provided with suitable garment-engaging means, such as button-loops 18.
By reason of the separate and independent adjustment of each end oi' each strap where the same is attached to the end portions 7 and 8 it will be seen that both of the desired adjustments may be obtained-that is, the garment maybe carried in a higher or lower position, as desired, or the end pieces may be moved rearward or forward, so that there is not an unequall strain on the front and rear portions of the garment at the waist-line.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- A suspender comprising two end pieces, each made of astraight strip of webbing having a garment-engaging piece secured at one end, and a chape secured to the other end of l ently adjustably connected with such garmenttho strip, said members on the strip being arranged to receive strain in a line passing through the longitudinal axis of the strip, a piece of weloloing extending angularly from one side of said strip` a chape secured to the free end of said latter strip and arranged in proximity to said chape and at an angle therewith, and two straps each having one end passed through one of said ehapes and fastened to an adjusting-buckle sliding on the IO strap.
