Application filed September 21, 1918.
'1 b aZZ'w 7mm it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. GREEN- WALD, acitizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolts, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an in proved belt for personal wear, specially adapted for mens wear, and designed to be substituted for the customary pair of suspenders in supporting the trousers at the waistband and over the hips of the wearer.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a belt of this character that preserves the usual neat and attractive appearance of belts of this type and combines therewith the added function of positively supporting the trousers over the hips of the wearer, and that in such manner as to be both comfortable and convenient for the wearer. One of the specially meritorious features of the belt is the fact that the added elements do not change the appearance of the belt; another attractive factor in the invention is the fact that the added elements perform their function of si'ipporting the belt on the hips without in any way distort" ing or disarranging the belt or the trousers which they support, but rather the belt itself aifords means for keeping and maintaining the trousers in proper position ab ut the waist of the wearer; and these added characteristics and their results are attained with but slightly increased cost of production of the belt.
In the accompanying drawings one C0111- plete example, and a modified form of the invention are illustrated, and arranged and constructed according to the best modes so far devised for the practical application of the principles of the invention. and the physical embodiment illustrated in the drawings, has proven highly satisfactory and gratifying to numerous wearers of the bolt as improved in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a belt ac cording to my invention, showing it in position as when used by a wearer.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged, transverse sectional view showing the belt passed through one of the loops or straps at the waistband of a pair of trousers.
liig. 3 illustrates a modified form of the Specification of Letters Patent.

belt wherein the reinforcement extends below the lower edge of the belt.
in the physical embodiment of my invention the drawings show a belt 1 of usual style and shape, and it will readily be apparent that the belt may be one already in use, or the invention may be applied for use during the manufacture of the new belt. The usual buckle 2 at one end of the belt, and the free end 3 with perforations -1- for the tongue or prong 5, serve to secure the parts, and the fixed loops 6 6 are present for the reception and retention of the end 8.
The invention consists essentially in providing the belt, at its interior face, and at opposite lateral points, with a pair of reinforcements or strips 7, 7, that are crescent shape and taper down to a thin edge, stitches 8 being employed to secure the strip as well as its thin edges 9 to the inner face of the belt. The belt of course is flexible, and the reinforcements or filler strips 7 are also flexible, but because of their added thickness, these strips render the belt at the sides, where the belt rests on the hips, less flexible than at other points throughout the circumference of the belt.
In wearing the belt it is used in customary manner, around the waistband 10 of the trousers and passed through the loops 11, as shown'in Fig. 2, and in Fig. 3 a modified form of the invention is shown wherein the belt 1 has the filler strip 7 extending below the edge of the belt, but the relation to the waistband 10 and the loop 11 of the trousers is the same.
In the two sectional views it will be apparent that the two strips 7 rest over the hips as indicated by the curves of the trousers material, and the entire belt is com fortably seated about the waistband of the wearer.
In putting on the belt, the wearer draws the buckle to the usual tension for comfort, and the natural curve or contour of the belt around the waist is not changed or dis turbed from the old style, but as the result of the presence of the strips 7, 7, the diameter of the belt, from the inner walls of its sides or from the inner faces of the strips, is decreased, and less than would be the case with the unaltered belt and these hip-strips 7 firmly h old and grip the body of the wearer just over the hips, holding the trousers up in proper position.
Thus the hip strips, Which are not visible to the observer, are satisfactorily felt by the wearer, Whose belt is thus left slightly slack so far as the belt itself is concerned, With its accompanying comfort and convenience, While the stri 3s perform, exclusively, the functions of gripping the wearer, at the hips only, to support the trousers.
In the modified form of Fig. 3 it is sometimes desirable and preferable that the strips project beloW the belt as indicated, and in some instances, this form of the invention is used instead of the first form illustrated. V W
lVhile the strips have been described as of leather, it Will readily be understood that other satisfactory and suitable material may be substituted therefor, and the form and dimensions of the strips may be changed, Without departing from the scope of the invention.
A garment supporting flexible belt for personal Wear having attached thereto at its hip portions strips with tapering ends, each of said strips made of relatively rigid mate rial and having a cross sectional area intermediate its ends of substantially greater thickness than the material of the belt, said strips merging into the belt at the points of attachment, and said belt adapted, through the instrumentality of these strips to grip the body only at the sides of the wearer above the hips. V
In testimony Whereof I affix my signature.
CHARLES E. GREENE WALD.
