IMPROVEMENT IN OVERALLS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,195, dated September 22, 1874 application filed May 23, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN LINDAUER, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Overalls and Pant-aloons, of which improvement the following is a full, clear, and exact description, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to' the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof, and in which the gure there shown represents a rear view of the waist of a pair of overalls embodying` my invention.

In selecting cheap ready-made pantaloons and overalls the purchaser is usually able to find a pair which tits him sufficiently well excepting about the waist. My object is to vrender this class of goods adjustable at the waist, so that the latter may be thereby nicely and readily fitted to persons differing from each other in size about that part of the body. To this end my invention consists of a vertical slit or cut made in the rear part of the waist of the goods, the edges of the part thus cut being provided with eyelets to receive a lacing-cord, and with whalebone or otherl suitable stitfening, substantially as hereinafter specified.

In the drawing, A represents the upper part of a pair of overalls or pantaloons. a is a vertical slit cut into the rear part of the waist. This eut extends entirely through the waistband and enters the body ofthe garment, as shown. c a areeyelets arranged along the edges of the cut a. These edges are hemmed or folded back, as represented by the dotted lines 5 and e e are strips of whalebone arranged within the hems thus made. Any suitable iiexible stiffening-such as leather, flexible wood, or even dat spring metal-may be employed instead of the whalebone. B is a lacingcord, arranged in the eyelets in such a mauner that the garment may be rendered either larger or smaller at the waist by either loosening or tightening the cord for that purpose. By this means the waist of the garment may be nicely and readily fitted to diiferent persons.

By using the lacing-cord the employment of the ordinary strap and buckle, which frequently become loose and detached, is avoided; and by employing the stiening in the manner described the cloth is prevented from being gathered when the cord is tightened. The cord and ilexible stiffening also allow the garment to adj ust itself to the form of the wearer, and the stiffening prevents the eyelets from being torn from their places.

I am aware that corsets have been laced in this manner, and that drawers have been provided With eyelets and a lacing-cord arranged in the rear part of the waist; but no stiftening has been employed in the latter garments, so far as I am aware.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The vertical slit or cut a, arranged in the rear part of the waist, and extending through the waistband deeply into the body, the edges along the said cut being provided with the eyelets a a', and with the ilexible stiffeningpieces e e between the said eyelets and the edges of the said cut, all combined and arranged substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
