will thoroughly protect the garments worn over it from being soiled by perspiration, and
.which will be cool and comfortable, and
which when once secured in place will not .be readily displaced.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel parts and combination of parts-hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that various changes within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
In the specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, the same reference characters are applied to the same parts throughout.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of one form of improved waistshield embodying the invention, showing it adjusted to the person of the wearer. l ig. 2 is a perspective view of the waist-shield shown in Fig. 1.
The material from which I preferabl make my improved waist-shield is what is known as stork sheeting. This material is extremely light and thoroughly waterproof and of a peculiar texture, which will not bind, chafe, or irritate. It will wash easily and is not hardened by hot water, and for these reasons I find that it makes an admirable material for the purpose for which I use it.
In making the improved waist-shield I prefer to form the back and side body portions of one continuous piece A. This piece A is out quite low in the back, and toward the sides of the back is formed upwardly-pointed V-shaped notches B, for the double purpose of reducing the material at these points where it is not needed for protection and to make the garment conform to the body of the wearer. The body portion A is cut away to fit under the arms and has sewed thereto the arm-pieces C. These arm-pieces are supported by the strips D, passing over the arms. The body and arm portions are made of the material Stork-sheeting, herein above referred to, and are bound at their edges with tape-binding.
Over the shoulders of the wearer and connecting the back portion E and the forward parts of the side portions F are adjustable elastic straps G. In the form of shield which I have chosen to illustrate in the drawings, the said straps G are fastened permanently to the back portion E and are passed through links H, secured to the front parts of the side portions F and the end adjustably secured by means of clips I. Across the chest of the wearer is passed an adjustable elastic strap K, one end of which issecured to one of the side portions F in the same manner as straps Gr, while its other end is removably secured to the remaining side portion Fas, for example, by a button. Secured to the lower part of the back portion E is a non-elastic waistband L, which is made adjustable at M and N. This waistband is secured to the side body portions F at the lower forward corners thereof by adjustable elastic straps P and Q. The ,waistband is detachably fastened together at its front central portion as by being buttoned together, as shown.
It will be evident that by forming my improved shield without any waterproof portions at the front thereof and by simply connecting this part by a strap extending entirely across the chest of the wearer I do away with a considerable amount of material which could not afford any protection and which would be likely to cause discomfort to the wearer.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, integrally-formed back and side portions, there being a V-shaped notch at the junction of the said back and side portions, arm portions, adjustable elastic means for securing the back portions to the upper forward parts of the side portions, a chest-strap, and a waistband, all substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a device of the class described, back, side and arm portions formed of waterproof material, adjustable elastic means connecting the back portion to the front of the side portions and adapted to extend over the shoulders of the wearer, a strap connecting In testimony that I claim the foregoing as the upper parts of the side portions together my own I have hereto affixed my signature in across the chest of the wearer, and an adthe presence of two witnesses. justable waistband secured to the lower part MARY LEOTA COCHRAN.
5 of the back portion, and means for connecting Witnesses:
the waistband to the lower parts of the side J. W. GROOVER,
