SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 403,457, dated May 14, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JUsTUs H. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Overalls; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification.

Myinvention relates to an improvement in overalls, the object being to provide a garment in which the buttons and the labor of forming the button-holes may be dispensed with, thereby materially decreasing the cost of the same; and with this end in view my invention consists of a pair of overalls having overlapping flaps, and a continuous elastic band extending around the waist of the garment along the edge of one flap to the crotch, and thence along the edge of the other flap back to the waist.

In the accompanying drawing I have shown a perspective view of a pair of overalls which are manufactured in accordance with my invention.

To put my invention into practice, I cut and form a pair of overalls, a, of a suitable size and of the required pattern, having at the front two overlapping triangular-shaped flaps, b c, encircling the rear portion of the waistband d, and secured therein by overlapping the fabric, an elastic band, e, one end of which extends down the edge of the inner flap, c, thence upwardly along the outer edge of the outside flap, b, and joined to the projecting end from the waistband d.

The outer edges of the flaps b c, I cut and form to curve inwardly, or toward each other, which will bind themselves closely about the person and prevent the same from remaining open while the garment is being worn.

This invention may be applied to other garmentssuch as under-drawers-without materially altering the same. Therefore I do not confine myself merely to the manufacture of overalls; but

\Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As an article of manufacture, a pair of overalls having the overlapping flaps b c and a continuous elastic band extending around the waist of the garment along the edge of one flap to the crotch, and thence along the edge of the other flap back to the waist, substantially as herein shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
