Description

May 11, 1943. A. D. coHN 2,318,924 SUSPENDER BELT Filed Oct. 15, 1941 INVENTOR v gr/h1g0 0. 06/7 ATTORNEY Patented May 11, 1943 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SUSPENDER BELT p 7 Arthur D. Cohn, New York, NrY. V H Application October 15,1941,-SerialNo.415,024
t 3 Claims. (91. 2 33 1) This invention relates to supporting structures for wearing apparel, and refers particularly to a new suspender and beltcombination which represents a basically new solutionof the-problemof supporting the trousers in an absolutelysafe and esthetical manner.
The-suspender and belt structure according to my invention may be manufactured from a single strap of substantially uniform material, such as leather, textile material or flexible, plastic material. Said strap is led through suitable guiding means including each a guiding element in an oblique position With'respect to the Waist of the trousers to which said strap may be applied, the strap being further led in a right angle or other suitable angle in a very simple, convenient and easily adjustable manner from the back of-the trousers upward and downward over the shoulders, so that both ends of the strap meet at the frontof the trousers, and may be coupled, for example by'a buckle, at the front and center of the trousers like the ends of the conventional belt.
The supporting structure according to my invention is devoid of the known metallic adjusting means and of the usual rubber or leather means forfastening a suspender-to the trousers or to the buttons provided thereon.
I Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following specification, and the appended drawing which shows by wayof example some preferred embodiments of my invention,
and in'which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the supporting structure according to my invention, as applied to a pair of trousers, the rear part of the latter being broken away for the sake of cleamess;
Fig. 2 shows a detail of the structure with a deviating or guiding member fastened to a portion of the trousers.
Fig. '3 shows a detail of a deviating or guiding member in modified form.
Fig. 4 shows a deviating member in still further form modified asfastened to a portion of the trousers.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Referring now to Figs. 1 and 2, numeral designates a pair of trousers provided with triangular holders or deviating members 2, 2' and 3, 3', which may be fastened to the trousers in any suitable manner. Holders 2 and 2' are fastened at the back, and holders 3, 3' are fastened at the front, to the outside of the fabric of the trousers. As shown in Fig. 1, the suspender-belt which may consist of a single fiat strap 4 of a suitable material, is led through. said' members 2 and 2 upward and downward over the shoulders, and then through holders 3 and 3, in a substantially horizontal direction. The ends of the strap are provided with a buckle 5, which serves foradjustably coupling the ends of strap 4.. Strap 4 may also be led over the shoulders in a crossed position at the back ofthe wearer.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the strap 4 is crossed after being passed through slot 6 of the holder or guiding means 5'. The parts of the strapll, which are thus crossed at the back of the. wearer, are then led over the shoulders in'a manner substantially similar to that illustrated in As shownin Fig. 4, the holder 1, through which the strap 4 is led, may have a modified form, and maybe fastened by means of a strip 8 of leather, textile fabric or other suitable material sewn to the fabric of the trousers.
It will be apparent that the structure according to this invention may consist of any suitable.
material,;such as textile fabric, sufficiently flexible plastics, rubber or-rubber derivatives, laminated or; composite materials. The suspender may consist of one single piece or several'pieces of the same materialordilferent materials which are combined to a suitable strap or the like. The
means for holding and guiding the strap may have any suitableshape, theymay consist of any suitable material and may be fastened to the trousers in any suitable manner. 7 a
The suspender-belt according to .my present q invention has the following advantages: 35
, I a 1.. Savings 1) It results in substantial savings of work and material, as the use of the customary 6 strips of leather or rubber for fastening the suspenders to the trousers, as well as the use of the customary metallic elements for adjusting the length of the suspender, is suspender-belt.
(b) In the customary suspenders, the above mentioned fastening and adjusting elements must be connected with the suspender proper by sewing and other means, and the costs of these steps as well as those of said parts proper, can be completely saved according to my invention.
entirely unnecessary in my new In order to avoid the displeasng aspect of an ordinary suspender, many persons Wear a belt only, which, however, is uncomfortable and/or unhealthy in many cases. In order to keep the trousers in their proper position, an ordinary belt must be drawn relatively tight, and it exerts,
therefore, an undue pressure on the body, and q sometimes also causes irritation of the skin. For this reason, many persons wear, in addition to a belt, an ordinary suspender or an ordinary suspender only which in both cases has the disadvantage of a displeasing aspect. These inconveniences and disadvantages are safely avoided by my new Suspender-belt combination, which appears on the body of the wearer as a combination of a belt having a usual coupling means, with two plain straps led over the shoulders in suspender-like fashion. These straps are not provided with the customary adjusting and fastening elements and they appear as plain straps which, if desired, may completely match with the clothing of the wearer. The pleasing appearance of my new Suspender-belt is due also to the fact that, in contrast to the customary suspenders, it does not consist of a plurality of combined parts, and has a uniform, plain and pleasant design which is not interrupted by the use of accessory parts.
Other advantages of the Suspender-belt according to this invention are due to its simple and comfortable use. The fastening of 6 strips of the customary suspenders to 6 buttons of the trousers, is bothersome and time-consuming, and the same is true to the adjustment of the length of the suspender by means of the well-known metallic adjusting elements.
All those operations are unnecessary in the use of my suspenderbelt, which may be easily adjusted by means of a single coupling element, which is positioned at an easily accessible part of the body. The adjustment of the length of my suspender-belt may be performed quickly and easily, as it requires only the tightening of the ends of the suspenderbelt, which are provided with a buckle or the like. The suspender-belt strap passes easily through the holding or guiding means which, as shown, are preferably provided with a guiding element, such as a ledge or slot, having an oblique position with respect to said strap. This grinding element is smooth, and it may be rounded in order to permit the strap to be led easily. Thus, the strap may be led in a right angle or in another suitable angle in a simple manner.
As will be evident from the above description, the invention is not limited to the specific embodiment presented herein for illustration, and is susceptible of various modifications within the scope and spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In combination with trousers, spaced deviating members fixed to the outer front of said trousers and including each a part obliquely disposed with respect to the waistline of the trousers, strap means of flexible material, adjusting means, the end portions of said strap means being deviated by said obliquely disposed parts at the front of the trousers to extend horizontally in belt-like fashion and being connectable with each other by said adjusting means at the center and the front of the trousers, the remainder of said strap means being upwardly deviated by said oblique parts to extend in suspender-like fashion over the shoulders of the wearer and to the back of the trousers, and means on the back of the trousers at which said strap means is held in position.
2. In combination with trousers, first deviating members spacedly arranged at the outer front and the waist of said trousers and including each a part obliquely disposed with respect to the waistline of the trousers, strap means of flexible material, coupling means, the end portions of said strap means being deviated by said obliquely disposed parts at the front of the trousers to extend horizontally in belt-like fashion and bein connectable with each other by said coupling means at the center and the front of the trousers, the remainder of said strap means being upwardly deviated by said obliquely disposed parts to extend in Suspender-like fashion over the shoulders of the wearer and to the back of the trousers, and second deviating members spacedly arranged and fixed to the back of the trousers and including each a part obliquely disposed with respect to the waistline of the trousers for guiding said strap means between said second deviating members in substantially horizontal direction.
3. The combination with trousers, members spacedly arranged at the waist on the outside of the front and on the outside of the rear of the trousers, each member being provided with a part obliquely disposed with respect to the waistline of the trousers, of a strap of flexible material, and adjusting means, said strap extending 7 substantially in horizontal direction and; belt-
