To all whom "it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD I-TOLDGATE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, resid ing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in \Vaistband Adjusters for Garments, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to waistbands for garments and has for its object to produce a waistband which is simple to adjust; comfortable to wear and cheap to manufacture. At the same time my device is one which is neat in appearance and can be adapted to any size of waist.

It is characteristic of my invention that it does away with all flexible strips or eyelets, and, when fitted to the wearer, the waistband at the point of adjustment is thin and smooth.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification in which:

Figure 1 is a front view of a skirt fitted with my improved adjustable waistband. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same.

5 represents the waistband of the ordinary skirt or other similar garment and in my invention I secure to the inner surface of the central back portion of the waistband 5 a waist-securing tape 6 which is fastened thereto for any desired distance on each side of the center of said back portion by lines of stitching placed at regular intervals as shown at 7. Waist-adjusting tapes 8 and 9 are secured to the outer surface of the waistband 5. One end of the waist-adjusting tape 8 is secured on the outer side of the band 5 at a point opposite one of the last lines of stitching 7. Lines of stitching 10, placed at intervals corresponding to the intervals between the lines of stitching 7 secure this tape 8 to the band 5 for a distance measured away from the center of the back portion and substantially equal to the distance from said center of the back portion to the last of the lines of stitching 7 Similarly one end of the waist-adjusting tape 9 is secured on the outer side of the band 5 at a point opposite the other of the last lines of stitching 7. The tape 9 is likewise secured by lines of stitching 11 placed at intervals equal to the intervals between the lines of stitching 10 and extending away from the center of the back portion of the band 5 for a distance equal to the distance covered by the lines of stitching 10.

To the outer surface of the waistband at a point central of the lines of stitching 7 in the waist-securing tape 6 is secured an eye member 12. The free ends of the waist-adjusting tapes 8 and 9 are passed through the eye member 12 and when they are drawn up they form in the waistband two superimposed folds or layers 13 and 14.

WVhen the garment provided with my device is to be worn the waist-securing tape 6 is first tied about the person of the wearer then the waist-adjusting tapes 8 and 9 are pulled, which thus draws the two folds or layers 13 and 14 toward each other and thereby tightens the waistband about the wearer. The waist-adjusting tapes 8 and 9 may be tied at the back or they may be made sufiiciently long to be brought around to the front and there tied.

If it is desired to increase the size of the waistband, one or more of the lines of stitching 10 near the free end, in each of the waist adjusting tapes 8 and 9 are ripped and a corresponding number of the lines of stitching 7 near the edge of the folds 18 and 1 1 in the waist-securing tape 6 are also ripped. This will narrow the widths of the superimposed folds or layers 13 and 14 and therefore fold up less of the waistband thus increasing the size thereof. To decrease the size of the waistband just the opposite to the foregoing is necessary. It will thus be seen that the distance between the exposed edges of the two folds 13 and 14 remain practically constant thus making a neat and uniform external appearance no matter what the waist measure may be.

Having thus described my invention what I claim is:

1. A waistband adjuster comprising a waistband, a waist-securing tape fixed to the center of the inside back portion of said waistband, lines of stitching placed at regular predetermined intervals on each side of said center for securing said waist-securing tape to the inside back portion of saidwaistband, two waist-adjusting tapes secured to the outside of said waistband and lines of stitching placed at regular predetermined intervals for securing said waist-adjusting tapes to the outside of said waistband, each of said last named lines of stitching beginning opposite the points where the lines of stitching which secure said waist-securing tape terminate and each extending away from the center of the back portion of said waistband whereby said waistband may be increased or decreased in size as desired.

2. A waistband adjuster comprising a Waistband, a waist-securing tape fixed to the center of the inside back portion of said waistband, lines of stitching placed at regular predetermined intervals on each side of said center for securing said waist-securing tape to the inside back portion of said waistband,two Waist-adjusting tapes secured to the outside of said waistband, lines of stitching placed at regular predetermined intervals for securing said Waist-adjusting tapes to the outside of said Waistband, each of said last named lines of stitching beginning opposite the points where the lines of stitching Which secure said waistsecuring tape terminate and each extending away from the center of the back portion of said waistband, and an eye member at the center of the outside of the back portion of said waistband for slidably receiving said waist adjusting tapes whereby said Waistband may be increased or decreased in size as desired.
