WAlST- -BELT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 747,060, dated December 1 5, 1903.
Application filed April 11, 1902. $erial No. 102,426. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOSEPH FORMAN, of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Waist-Belts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in waist-belts.
The invention has for its object the production of a simple and inexpensive belt by means of which the waistband of a pair of trousers or other garment may be tightened around the body in such manner as to confine the slack at some one desirable point, preferably the back, whereby said waistband is caused to neatly and snugly fit the person and at the same time support said garment.
A further object is to provide a belt formed of two sections arranged to slide one upon the other, the rearend of one section working inside the belt proper and the rear end of the other section Working outside the belt proper, means being provided for attaching said ends to a garment, and to provide a belt that is adjustable in the rear and of substantially the same width throughoutits length, whereby the full strength of the fabric or material is maintained and slitting or puncturing of the parts obviated.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In carrying out my invention I form a belt of two sections the rear ends of which are arranged to slide one over the other, whereby the belt may be adjusted to fit any size waist. The rear end of each section is permanently secured to the waistband of the garment in such manner as to practically form a part of the latter and yet allowing of the ready adjustment of the parts.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View illustrating my improved waist-belt. trating the sliding connection. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a slight modification. Fig. 5 is a view of the form of 'tions.
Fig. 2 is an outer face viewillus- Referring to the drawings, 10 11 designate the two sections of a belt, which work in loops or slides 12 13, secured to the waistband W in any preferred manner. The end of the section 10 is secured to the waistband by means of stitches, as indicated at a, and also tothe loop or slide 13. The other section, 11, issecured to the loop or slide 12, as indicated at b, in such manner that the section 10 may slide thereunder. On the outer face of each section of the belt and extending longitudinally thereof is secured a supplemental strip 14, the same being designed to form a thick ened wearing-surface, whereby the ends are prevented from sliding when they are engaged by a frictional buckle 15. Said buckle is preferably formed with two sets of transverse slots 16 17, through which the sections 10 11, respectively, pass.
In Fig. 4: I have illustrated a slight modification, which consists, primarily, in dispensing wit-h the loops or slides 12 13 and securing the rear ends of the belt-sections direct to the waistband, as indicated at c, leaving a space 18 to allow the section 10 to pass under section 11, whereby the sliding adjustment is obtained.
In practice it will be observed that by pulling on the free ends of the belt-sections the waistband W will be drawn snugly and neatly around the waist, all slack being conbuckle preferably employed in connection with my belt.
fined to the rear between the points where the two sections of the belt are secured to the Waistband, this effect being accomplished by reason of the sliding relation of the belt-sec- The buckle 15 is adjusted on section 10 of the belt so as to come in front of the center of the body, and its position is not thereafter changed. The section 11 is then passed through the slots 17, whereby the ends are held together, the supplemental strip 14 serving to greatly increase the frictional contact 5 of this character have been made with slits or the like, whereby the two sections may be KOO crossed to obtain a relative adjustment. Such a structure possesses many disadvantages, the most important of which are that there is but a slight adjustment obtainable, the parts are weakened, and the sections do not move freely to obtain the desired adjustment. These objections are all overcome by means of my invention, and it will also be noted that by providing the belt-sections with the supplemental strip a neat and finished appearance is given to the garment andsaid sections are firmly united at their free endE I claim as my invention- 1. The combination with a garment, of a waist-belt comprising two sections arranged to slide one over the other, the rear end of one of said sections working inside the belt proper and the rear end of the other section working outside the belt proper, and means for permanently securing each of said rearends to said garment.
2. The combination with a garment of a to slide one over the other, the rear end of one of said sections working inside the belt proper and the rear end of the other section working outside the belt proper, guiding means forming a part of the belt, and means for permanently securing said guiding means to said garment.
3. The combination with a garment, of a waist-belt comprising two sections, the rear end of one section working inside the belt proper and the rear end of the other section working outside the belt proper, a guidingloop carried by each-section, each section of the belt being passed through the loop of its companion section, and means for permanently securing said loops to said garment.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
