MYRTA CAMI LE GARLAND, OFwNEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
BELT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 695,549, dated March 18, 1902.
Application filed April 16, 1901- To all whom it mag "concern.-
Be it known that I, MYRTA OAMILLE GAR- LAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belts, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings, I
My invention relates to improvements in belts, and has for its object the construction of a waist-belt in which the front will be held in a lower plane than the back when fastened around the body, so that in front of the body' the belt may have the drooping appearance now very much in vogue, and, further, to so design the belt that only one buckle will be required for the fastening means, which will be both neat and pleasing in appearance.
To these and other ends my invention consists in a belt constructed substantially as hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals designate like parts in the several figures, Figure l is a front elevation of a belt having my improvement attached thereto; Fig. 2, an enlarged view of the buckle, and Fig. 3 a section thereof upon line A B.
The band is designated 1 and is shown as having narrow strap ends 2 2, and to the end of one of the straps, as 2, is secured a buckle 3, so that the tongue thereof is parallel to the width of the band, and through the other strap end, as 2, are the usual tongue-holes 4.
It is apparent from the drawings that as the strap end 2 must pass through the buckle vertically when it is placed around the body that the strap ends will be pitched downwardly and the desired drooping effect there- In the belts heretofore made having these objects in View two buckles have been used, which buckles are fastened togethcr by an auxiliary strap, the buckles and strap being independent and separate from the band. This method results in a bulky and cumbersomellooking device, which is far from pleasing in appearance, there being no less than seven thicknesses of leather where the belt ends meet. With myimprovement, wherein the tongue of the buckle lies substantially parallel with the width of the band,
I obtain the desired drooping effect and with- Serial No. 6,032. (No model.)
ends of a waist-belt together so as to impart thereto a drooping appearance, and therefore do not claim such construction broadly, but
limit myself to the construction substantially as herein shown and described.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a waist-belt, the combination with a buckle having two side bars, two cross-bars joining either end to said side bars and two intermediate cross -bars between said end cross-bars with a tongue secured to one of said intermediate cross-bars and extending across the other of said intermediate crossbars and'terminating over the end cross-bar; of a band secured at one end to one of the side bars of said'buckle between said intermediate bars and having a plurality of tongueholes therethrough adjacent to the opposite end, all constructed and operating substantially as described.
2. In a waist-belt, the combination with a buckle having two side bars, two cross-bars joining either end of said side bars and two intermediate cross bars between said end cross-bars with a tongue secured to one of said intermediate cross-bars and extending across the other of said intermediate crossbars and terminating over the end cross-bar; of a band 1 having strap ends 2 and 2 of less width than the intermediate portion of said belt, the strap end 2 being secured to one of the side bars of said buckle between the said intermediate bars and the strap end 2 having a plurality of tongue-holes 4: therethrough, and when secured within the buckle the strap ends 2 and 2 lie in the same plane at substantially a right angle to each other, all constructed and operating substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature
