GARMENT-SUPPORTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N 0. 674,973, dated May 28, 1901.

To all whom it may concern.-

. Be it known that I, FRANK W. LOWE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Garment-Supporters, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to certain improvements in garment-supporters in which two slotted plates held together by a helical spring are employed instead of rubber elastic; and the invention consists of two slides formed of wire and bent into a suitable form, to which the straps are secured, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the accompanying drawings,

Figure 1 is a face view of a hose or stocking supporter embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of same. Fig. 3 is a detail View showing the wire slides and helical spring before being attached to the cloth portion of the supporter. Fig. 4 is a front view of one of the Wire slides, and Fig. 5 is a side view of same.

A A are two slides formed of Wire bent into the form shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the central portion being bent to form a loop a, the wire meeting in the center, as at 2, and then again bentdown atright angles,as at b,and then bent over and down on a slight angle 4, the ends of the Wire meeting inthe center and forming a loop 0. The loops at the upper and the lower ends are bent over at about an angle of forty-five degrees, and by reason of the lower sides of the lower loop being on an angle and slightly curved it projects a short distance beyond the upper loop. Two of these slides are placed together, with the straight loops at opposite ends and projecting outwardly, and upon the central straight portion 1) is placed a helical spring B, so that after the two ends have been drawn apart by the straps and the tension has been released the spring will draw the loops back to their normal position.

Cis the upperstrap,which is passed through the loop at the lower end to the lower portion of the front slide, the end being secured to the strap about the height of the top loop, and the free end is then passed through the upper loop of same, then passed through a buckle D, and passed through a loop formed at the lower end of a safety-pin E, and thence carried down and secured to the center bar of the buckle D, so that the length of the strap can be adjusted as may be required.

E is the lower strap and is placed over the upper portion of the upper loop of the rear slide, the ends being passed down through the lower loop, and each end is fitted with a catch or fastener F.

By having the loops 0 on the slides placed at opposite ends the straps are held a short distance from the helical spring, and the straps being of double thickness opposite said spring there will not be any wear upon the outer portion of the straps.

What I claim is- A garment supporter consisting of two slides, each formed of a single piece of wire, having its two ends bent to form elongated loops, both of said loops being bent or deflected laterally so as to lie at an angle to the main portion which connects said loops, said main portion being straight between the loops, a helical spring inclosing the two straight portions and two straps each extending through the loop of one slide and extending around the other loop of the same slide, whereby said straps cover the spring, substantially as and for the purpose described.
