Description

UNITED STATES Patented July 21, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
wAlsT-BEL-r.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent 734,167, dated July Y21, 1903.
Application filed 0otober`8, 1901. Serial No. 77,951. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY JACQUES GATS- MAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, borough of Manhattan, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Waist- Belts, of which the following is a specification. A
Some styles of belts are made by braiding strands of leather or other fabric into a substantially flat braid and providing fastening means at the ends for holding the belt around a waist; but in this class of beltsthere is an inherent disadvantage in that the braided strands permit the belts to stretch when strain is put upon the same; audit is the object of my invention to provide a belt of the class described with means to prevent such stretching, To this end I provide a braided belt with a non-elastic strip, cord, or strand which extends lengthwise of the belt and issecured thereto near opposite ends of the braid, whereby the belt is kept from stretching. As a means for retaining the strip, cord, or strand in proper position relatively to the braided strands I weave said strip or cord in with a. plurality of the strands, so that said cord will be retained in its proper position.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, wherein- Figure 1 is a face View of the inner side of aA belt embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of part thereof.
In the drawings the numeral 1 indicates the main body portion of the belt, which is composed of a plurality of strands 1, braided together in well-known manner, preferably forming a flat braid, any suitable number of such strands being used. At one end of the body portion is a tongue or the like 2, which may be formed integral with the strands l by slitting a piece ofvleather or fabric from the point 2 and braiding such strands, or the strands may be separate from the tongue and secured thereto in well-known manner. At the opposite end of the ,body portion of the belt is secured a fastener or buckle 3, adapted to engage the tongue 2, and said buckle may be attached to the strands la in wellknown manner. I have shown the buckle as attached to avweb 4, that is secured to the strand la, as by threads 4a.
5 is a non-elastic strip, cord, or strand eX- tending longitudinally of the braided portion ofthe belt and having its ends irmly attached to the belt, as by being tied to a strand 1a or by being held by a rivet or stitches, as at 1X, or in other' suitable manner. Means are provided to maintain the strip, cord, or strand 5 in line with the body portion of the belt, so
ythat it will not sag below the belt when in use, and for this purpose I have shown the strip or cord 5 as passing behind certain of the strands l, as at lb, thereby being retained between the strands, as shown; but other means may be provided for maintaining the strip or cord 5 in line with the body portion of the belt between the ends of the cord, if preferred.
Having now described my invention, what I claim'is.-
A bolt comprising braided strands, means for attaching the ends of the belt together, and a strip or cord extending longitudinally along the inner face of the braided strands and firmly attached near its ends to the belt, said strip or cord being retained in position on the belt by strands of the belt which pass on opposite sides of the strip or cord, substantially as described.
