APPAREL-BELT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 656,918, dated August 28, 1900.
4 Application filed July 5. 1900. Serial No. 22,566. (No model.)
To all whom t may con/cern.-
Be it known that I, AMAND WIGHARD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Belt, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in belts, particularly waist-belts for womens wear; and the object is to provide a belt of simple and strong construction adapted to yield lengthwise, thus forcing it to iit snugly yet easily around a persons Waist.
I will describe a belt embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of a belt embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a partial edge view and partial section showing a modification.
The belt comprises main or body portions I 2 and a back piece 3, with which the main or body portions have yielding connection. In Figs. l and 2 the back portion 3 is shown as provided with loops fl at its ends, through which the rear ends of the sections l and 2 are adapted to slide. A flexible connection is provided between the rear ends of the sections l and 2 and the back piece or portion. This connection consists of elastic webbing 5, looped through clips 6, attached to the ends of the portions 1 and 2, and this elastic webbing is attached tothe center of the back portion 3 in any desired manner. I have here shown it as attached by means of a rivet 7, passing through said back portion 3 and provided at its outer side with an ornamental button 8. It may be here stated that this rear portion 3 may be ornamented in any desired manner, and it will also be understood that suitable buckles or fastening devices are designed to be attached to the front ends of the belt-sections I and 2.
To limit the movement of the sections l and 2 relatively to each other, or, in other words, to limit the stretching movement of the 'flexible web, I employ a tape or ribbon 9, which is fastened at its ends to the parts 6,
and at its middle it is fastened to the rivet 7. This ribbon of course will be somewhat longer than the normal length of the elastic web-V bing, as clearly indicated in Fig. 2.
In Fig. 3 I have shown the belt-sections l and 2 as provided at the rear ends with loops 10, through which the ends of the back piece 3 are adapted to move. In this modification the ends of the back piece 3 bear against the inner side of the sections l and 2 of the belt, and the elastic webbing 1l is secured at the center to the center of the back piece and has its ends attached to the belt-sections I and 2 forward of the loops IO. A ribbon l2 is also provided in this construction and serves the purpose ot' the ribbon or tape 9 first described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A belt, comprising main or body sections, a back section relatively to which the first-named sections are adapted to slide, flexible connections between said body-sections and the back section, and means for limiting the stretching movement of said iiexible connections, substantially as speci= iied.
2. A belt, comprising main or body sections, a back section adapted to slide relatively to the main or body sections, an elastic material connected to the rear ends of the body-sections and also connected to said rear section, and a ribbon or tape connected to the rear ends of said bodysection, substantially as specied.
3. A belt, comprising two main or body sections, a rear section having loops at its ends through which the main or body sections may slide, clips on the rear ends of said bodysections, an elastic attached to said clips and also attached to the said rear section, and a ribbon or the like also connected to the said clips and to said rear section, the ribbon being between the elastic and the rear section, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification inthe presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AMAND WIGIIARD.
