CLAUS FREESE, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO VILLIAM PFEIFER, A. C. ERFORT, AND A. C.
STORCK, ALL OF SAME PLACE.
GARTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,985, dated November 24, 1891.
Application filed April 25, 1891. Serial No. 890,437. (No model.)
To aZ whom it may concern: l
Be it known that I, CLAUS FREEsE, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in garters; and it consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and designated in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l shows an application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the garter itself; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken through the buckle, the hose, and under-garment, showing how the buckle is secured to the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a garter simple in construction, cheap, and durable, the same especially designed for gentlemen.
By the construction of garter I employ it can be readily perceived that the same does not pass around the limb of the wearer and prevent circulation of blood, as is the casein the ordinary construction of garters.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the hose, and 2 the under-garment.
3 indicates the buckles of the garter, which are secured together by elastic bands 4 in any suitable and mechanical manner. Said buckles are provided with a transverse piece 5, the same being formed integrally with the buckles or secured thereto in any suitable and mechanical manner. These bars 5 serve to aid in holding the garment on the tongue. Said transverse piece or pieces, as the case may be, are provided with depressions 6, in which the point of the elastic tongue 7 is adapted to it when the garter is functionally applied, as hereinbefore stated. Tongue 7 is formed integrally with the buckle and extends inwardly from the body of the buckle and is adapted to pass through the hose l and the under-garment 2.
Having described the mechanical parts of my invention, I will now proceed to describe the manner of using the same.
lVhen it is desired to wear the garter, the
operator should take hold of buckles 3 and pull them apart, or rather stretch the elastic band 4, and then apply the tongue 7 to the hose and under-garment. vThe contraction of the elastic band will of course Wherf left to contract force the tongue 7 through the hose and also through theunder-garment. Of course to remove the same the operation is as ordicated between said openings and having a depression 6 in the center thereof, and a exible tongue 7, formed integral with the outer end of the frame, so that its inner end will rest in said depression, substantially as described.
2. As an article of manufacture, a garter comprising a short piece of elastic material 4 and buckles secured to each end thereof, said buckles each consisting of a frame having an opening for the reception of the end of said elastic material, a second opening for the reception of a portion of the garment to be held, a cross-piece 5 between said openings, a depression 6 in the center of said crosspiece, and ailexible tongue 7, having its outer end secured to the outer end of the buckleframe and its inner end resting in said depression 6, the flexible tongues at both ends of said elastic material having their points facing each other and each located substantially in alignment with the center of said elastic material, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CLAUS FREESE.
